1And the Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded: 2And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.15.2 to meet…: Heb. before Asa 3Now for a long season Israel hath been without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law. 4But when they in their trouble did turn unto the LORD God of Israel, and sought him, he was found of them. 5And in those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations were upon all the inhabitants of the countries. 6And nation was destroyed of nation, and city of city: for God did vex them with all adversity.15.6 destroyed: Heb. beaten in pieces 7Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.
8And when Asa heard these words, and the prophecy of Oded the prophet, he took courage, and put away the abominable idols out of all the land of Judah and Benjamin, and out of the cities which he had taken from mount Ephraim, and renewed the altar of the LORD, that was before the porch of the LORD.15.8 abominable…: Heb. abominations 9And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and the strangers with them out of Ephraim and Manasseh, and out of Simeon: for they fell to him out of Israel in abundance, when they saw that the LORD his God was with him. 10So they gathered themselves together at Jerusalem in the third month, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Asa. 11And they offered unto the LORD the same time, of the spoil which they had brought, seven hundred oxen and seven thousand sheep.15.11 the same…: Heb. in that day 12And they entered into a covenant to seek the LORD God of their fathers with all their heart and with all their soul; 13That whosoever would not seek the LORD God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. 14And they sware unto the LORD with a loud voice, and with shouting, and with trumpets, and with cornets. 15And all Judah rejoiced at the oath: for they had sworn with all their heart, and sought him with their whole desire; and he was found of them: and the LORD gave them rest round about.
16¶ And also concerning Maachah the mother of Asa the king, he removed her from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove: and Asa cut down her idol, and stamped it, and burnt it at the brook Kidron.15.16 mother: that is, grandmother15.16 idol: Heb. horror 17But the high places were not taken away out of Israel: nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect all his days.
18¶ And he brought into the house of God the things that his father had dedicated, and that he himself had dedicated, silver, and gold, and vessels. 19And there was no more war unto the five and thirtieth year of the reign of Asa.
O despertamento de Asa
(1 Rs 15.13-16)
1Então o Espírito de Deus veio sobre Azarias, filho de Odede. 2Este foi encontrar-se com o rei Asa, quando o rei regressava da batalha. “Escuta-me, Asa! Ouçam, todos os exércitos de Judá e de Benjamim!”, gritou ele. “O Senhor estará convosco, enquanto vocês estiverem com ele! Sempre que o buscarem, o acharão. Mas se lhe virarem as costas, ele vos deixará. 3Durante muito tempo, o povo de Israel não prestou culto ao verdadeiro Deus, nem teve sacerdotes para o ensinar; viveram sem a Lei de Deus. 4Contudo, sempre que se voltavam para o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, e na sua angústia o procuravam, ele socorria-os. 5Nos tempos de rebelião contra Deus não havia paz, nem para os que saíam, nem para os que entravam. Um período de grandes perturbações veio sobre os habitantes daquela nação. 6Havia guerras no exterior e conflitos internos entre as cidades. Era Deus quem os afligia com todos esses apertos. 7Mas vocês, gente de Judá, esforcem-se por fazer o bem e não desanimem, porque serão recompensados.”
8Ouvindo as palavras e a mensagem do profeta Azarias, filho de Odede, Asa encheu-se de coragem e destruiu todos as abominações das terras de Judá e de Benjamim, assim como das povoações que tinha ocupado nas colinas de Efraim. Reconstruiu também o altar do Senhor do pórtico do templo do Senhor.
9Depois convocou todo o povo de Judá e de Benjamim e os imigrantes de Israel, porque muita gente viera dos territórios de Efraim, Manassés e Simeão, ao perceberem que o Senhor Deus estava com o rei Asa.
10Todos vieram a Jerusalém, no terceiro mês do décimo quinto ano do reinado de Asa. 11Sacrificaram ao Senhor 700 bois e 7000 cordeiros; era parte do despojo capturado na batalha. 12Em seguida, fizeram uma promessa solene de prestar culto unicamente ao Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados. 13Concordaram também que se alguém se recusasse a adorar o Senhor, Deus de Israel, deveria morrer, fosse velho ou novo, homem ou mulher. 14Juraram bem alto a sua lealdade ao Senhor, acompanhados de toques de trombetas e cornetas. 15Todos estavam felizes com este juramento, pois fizeram-no de boa vontade e de todo o seu coração. Buscaram o Senhor acima de todas as coisas e encontraram-no; por isso, o Senhor deu paz a toda a nação.
16O rei Asa retirou à sua avó Maacá a distinção de rainha-mãe, por ter sido ela quem fizera o abominável ídolo de Achera; destruiu esse ídolo desprezível, despedaçou-o e queimou-o, deitando as cinzas no ribeiro de Cedron. 17Contudo, em Israel não foram removidos os santuários pagãos sobre as colinas, apesar do coração de Asa se manter fiel ao Senhor todo o tempo da sua vida. 18Tornou a trazer para o templo as taças e as bacias de prata e de ouro que o seu pai tinha consagrado a Deus.
19Não houve guerra até ao trigésimo quinto ano do reinado de Asa.
