1And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. 2Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beer-sheba. 3And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
4Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, 5And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
6¶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. 10¶ And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king. 11And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots. 12And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots. 13And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers. 14And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants. 15And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.8.15 officers: Heb. eunuchs 16And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work. 17He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants. 18And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
19¶ Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; 20That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles. 21And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD. 22And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

Das Volk will einen König
1Als Samuel alt wurde, übergab er seinen beiden Söhnen das Richteramt. 2Joel, der ältere, und Abija, sein jüngerer Bruder, waren Richter in Beerscheba. 3Doch sie folgten nicht dem Vorbild ihres Vaters, sondern waren nur darauf aus, sich zu bereichern. Sie ließen sich bestechen und beugten das Recht.
4Da versammelten sich die Sippenoberhäupter von Israel und gingen gemeinsam zu Samuel nach Rama. 5»Samuel«, sagten sie, »du bist zu alt geworden, um das Volk noch richtig führen zu können, und deine Söhne folgen nicht deinem Vorbild. So setz doch einen König als Herrscher über uns ein, wie auch alle unsere Nachbarvölker einen haben.«
6Samuel war nicht damit einverstanden, dass sie plötzlich einen König haben wollten. Er zog sich zurück, um den Herrn um Rat zu fragen. 7Der Herr antwortete: »Gib ihnen, was sie wollen! Mit ihrer Forderung lehnen sie ja nicht dich ab, sondern mich. Sie wollen mich nicht mehr als ihren König anerkennen. 8Das passt zu ihnen! Seit ich sie damals aus Ägypten herausführte, war es immer dasselbe: Immer wieder haben sie mich vergessen und sind anderen Göttern nachgelaufen. Genauso machen sie es nun auch mit dir. 9Erfülle ihre Forderung! Doch warne sie vorher und sag ihnen ausdrücklich, welche Rechte ein König besitzt und was es bedeutet, einen König zu haben.«
Die Rechte des Königs
10Samuel berichtete dem Volk alles, was der Herr ihm gesagt hatte. 11Er erklärte ihnen: »Ihr müsst bedenken, welche Rechte dieser König haben wird: Er wird eure Söhne in seinen Dienst nehmen, damit sie sich um seine Wagen kümmern, seine Pferde pflegen8,11 Oder: damit sie auf Wagen und Pferden für ihn in den Krieg ziehen. und als Leibwächter vor dem königlichen Wagen herlaufen. 12Einige von ihnen wird er als Hauptleute oder als Truppenführer einsetzen. Andere müssen seine Felder bearbeiten und für ihn die Ernte einbringen. Handwerker werden für ihn Waffen und Wagen anfertigen. 13Eure Töchter holt er zu sich an den Königshof. Sie werden für ihn Salben mischen, für ihn kochen und backen. 14Eure besten Felder, Weinberge und Olivengärten wird er für sich beanspruchen und von seinen Knechten bearbeiten lassen. 15Vom Ertrag eurer Äcker und Weinberge zieht er ein Zehntel als Steuern ein, um damit seine Hofleute und Beamten zu bezahlen. 16Eure Knechte und Mägde wird er übernehmen, die kräftigsten und besten jungen Männer müssen ihm dienen. Auch eure Lasttiere wird er benutzen. 17Er verlangt von euch ein Zehntel eurer Schafe und Ziegen, und ihr alle seid seine Untertanen und müsst ihm gehorchen.
18Dann werdet ihr bereuen, dass ihr euch je einen König gewünscht habt. Doch wenn ihr dann zum Herrn um Hilfe schreit, wird er euch keine Antwort geben.«
19Aber das Volk ließ sich von Samuel nicht umstimmen und weigerte sich, auf ihn zu hören. »Wir wollen einen König haben!«, riefen sie. 20»Wir wollen nicht anders sein als unsere Nachbarvölker! Unser König soll für uns Recht sprechen und im Krieg unser Anführer sein!«
21Samuel hörte sich ihre Wünsche an und berichtete sie dem Herrn. 22»Erfülle ihre Forderung«, antwortete der Herr, »und setz einen König über sie ein!«
Danach verabschiedete Samuel sich von den Männern und schickte sie nach Hause.
