1And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. 2Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beer-sheba. 3And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
4Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, 5And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
6¶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.8.6 displeased: Heb. was evil in the eyes of 7And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. 8According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee. 9Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.8.9 hearken…: or, obey8.9 howbeit…: or, notwithstanding when thou hast solemnly protested against them then thou shalt
10¶ And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king. 11And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots. 12And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots. 13And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers. 14And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants. 15And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.8.15 officers: Heb. eunuchs 16And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work. 17He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants. 18And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
19¶ Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; 20That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles. 21And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD. 22And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
Les Israélites demandent un roi
1Samuel, devenu vieux, confia à ses fils l’administration de la justice en Israël. 2L’aîné s’appelait Joël et le cadet Abiya. Ils s’établirent à Beer-Sheva8.2 A 70 kilomètres au sud-ouest de Jérusalem, donc loin de la région où Samuel rendait la justice : c’est donc pour compléter son action que Samuel institua ses fils, non pour qu’ils le remplacent ou prennent sa succession. pour y rendre la justice. 3Mais ils ne suivaient pas les traces de leur père : comme ils étaient corrompus par l’amour de l’argent, ils acceptaient des pots-de-vin et faussaient le droit. 4C’est pourquoi tous les responsables d’Israël se réunirent auprès de Samuel à Rama. 5Ils lui déclarèrent : Te voilà devenu âgé, et tes fils ne suivent pas tes traces ; maintenant, établis sur nous un roi pour qu’il nous dirige8.5 Autre traduction : pour qu’il rende la justice pour nous (de même aux v. 6 et 20). comme cela se fait chez tous les autres peuples8.5 Voir Dt 17.14..
6Cette demande d’établir sur eux un roi pour les diriger déplut à Samuel et il pria l’Eternel. 7L’Eternel lui répondit : Ecoute ce peuple et accepte toutes leurs demandes. En effet, ce n’est pas toi qu’ils rejettent, c’est moi : ils ne veulent plus que je règne sur eux. 8Ils agissent à ton égard comme ils n’ont cessé d’agir envers moi depuis le jour où je les ai fait sortir d’Egypte jusqu’à aujourd’hui : ils m’ont abandonné pour rendre un culte à d’autres dieux. 9Maintenant, fais donc ce qu’ils te demandent, mais avertis-les bien en leur faisant connaître les droits du roi qui régnera sur eux.
Les droits du roi
10Samuel rapporta au peuple qui lui demandait un roi toutes les paroles de l’Eternel. 11Il leur dit : Voilà quels seront les droits du roi qui régnera sur vous. Il prendra vos fils pour en faire ses soldats et les affectera au service de ses chars de guerre et de ses chevaux, et ils auront à courir devant son char personnel8.11 Les chars royaux étaient précédés de coureurs (2 S 15.1 ; 1 R 1.5).. 12Il choisira certains parmi eux pour en faire des officiers commandant de « milliers » et de « cinquantaines8.12 Il s’agit peut-être là de régiments et de compagnies de soldats comportant respectivement quelques centaines et quelques dizaines d’hommes. ». Il en prendra d’autres pour labourer ses champs et récolter ses moissons, ou pour fabriquer ses armes et l’équipement de ses chars. 13Il prendra vos filles comme parfumeuses, cuisinières et boulangères. 14Il prendra vos champs, vos vignes et vos meilleurs oliviers pour les donner à ses hauts fonctionnaires. 15Il prélèvera une redevance de dix pour cent sur les produits de vos champs et de vos vignes et il la distribuera à ses courtisans et à ses hauts fonctionnaires. 16Il prendra vos serviteurs, vos servantes et vos jeunes gens8.16 Au lieu de : vos jeunes gens, l’ancienne version grecque a : votre bétail. vigoureux, et même vos ânes, et il s’en servira pour ses propres travaux. 17Il prélèvera une bête sur dix dans vos troupeaux et vous deviendrez ses serviteurs. 18Ce jour-là, vous vous lamenterez à cause du roi que vous aurez choisi, mais l’Eternel ne vous écoutera pas.
19Le peuple refusa de tenir compte des avertissements de Samuel. Les Israélites insistèrent en déclarant : Qu’importe ! Nous voulons quand même un roi. 20Nous voulons, nous aussi, être dirigés comme tous les autres peuples. Notre roi rendra la justice parmi nous et prendra notre commandement pour nous mener au combat.
21Samuel écouta tout ce que disait le peuple et le rapporta à l’Eternel. 22L’Eternel lui répondit : Accorde-leur ce qu’ils te demandent et établis un roi sur eux !
Puis Samuel dit aux gens d’Israël : Que chacun retourne dans sa ville !
