1And the men of Kirjath-jearim came, and fetched up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD. 2And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD.
3¶ And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines. 4Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only. 5And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD. 6And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.
7And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines. 8And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.7.8 Cease…: Heb. 9¶ And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.7.9 heard: or, answered 10And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel. 11And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth-car. 12Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.7.12 Eben-ezer: that is, The stone of help
13¶ So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. 14And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites. 15And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. 16And he went from year to year in circuit to Beth-el, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.7.16 in circuit: Heb. and he circuited 17And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD.
1Kaya kinuha ng mga taga-Kiriat Jearim ang Kahon ng Panginoon at dinala sa bahay ni Abinadab na nasa burol. Pinili nila si Eleazar na anak ni Abinadab na magbantay dito.
Ang Pamumuno ni Samuel sa Israel
2Nanatili sa Kiriat Jearim ang Kahon ng Panginoon sa mahabang panahon – mga 20 taon. Sa panahong iyon, nagdalamhati at humingi ng tulong sa Panginoon ang buong mamamayan ng Israel. 3Sinabi ni Samuel sa kanila, “Kung taos sa puso ninyo ang pagbabalik-loob sa Panginoon, itapon ninyo ang inyong mga dios-diosan pati na ang imahen ni Ashtoret. Ilaan ninyo ang inyong buhay sa Panginoon lamang at siya lang ang inyong paglingkuran. Kung gagawin ninyo ang mga ito, ililigtas niya kayo sa kamay ng mga Filisteo.” 4Kaya itinapon nila ang mga imahen ni na Baal at Ashtoret, at sa Panginoon lamang sila naglingkod.
5Pagkatapos, sinabi ni Samuel sa mga Israelita, “Magtipon kayong lahat sa Mizpa at ipapanalangin ko kayo sa Panginoon.” 6Nang magkatipon na silang lahat sa Mizpa, kumuha sila ng tubig at ibinuhos sa harap ng presensya ng Panginoon. Nang araw na iyon, hindi sila kumain buong araw at nagsisi sa mga kasalanang ginawa nila sa Panginoon. Pinamunuan ni Samuel ang Israel doon sa Mizpa.
7Nang mabalitaan ng mga Filisteo na nagtitipon ang mga Israelita sa Mizpa, naghanda ang mga pinuno ng mga Filisteo para salakayin sila. Nang mabalitaan ito ng mga Israelita, natakot sila sa mga Filisteo. 8Sinabi nila kay Samuel, “Huwag po kayong tumigil sa pananalangin sa Panginoon na ating Dios na iligtas niya tayo sa mga Filisteo.” 9Kaya kumuha si Samuel ng isang batang tupa at sinunog ito nang buo bilang handog na sinusunog para sa Panginoon. Humingi siya ng tulong sa Panginoon para sa Israel at sinagot siya ng Panginoon.
10Habang iniaalay ni Samuel ang handog na sinusunog, dumating ang mga Filisteo para makipaglaban sa mga Israelita. Pero sa araw na iyon, nagpakulog nang malakas ang Panginoon kaya natakot at nalito ang mga Filisteo, at nagsitakas sila sa mga Israelita. 11Hinabol sila at pinatay ng mga Israelita sa daan mula sa Mizpa hanggang sa Bet Car.
12Pagkatapos, kumuha si Samuel ng isang bato at inilagay sa gitna ng Mizpa at Shen. Pinangalanan niya itong Ebenezer dahil sinabi niya, “Hanggang ngayon, tinutulungan kami ng Panginoon.” 13Kaya natalo nila ang mga Filisteo, at hindi na nila muli pang sinalakay ang mga Israelita habang nabubuhay pa si Samuel dahil ang Panginoon ay laban sa mga Filisteo. 14Naibalik sa Israel ang mga lupain malapit sa Ekron at Gat, na sinakop ng mga Filisteo. Natigil na rin ang digmaan sa pagitan ng mga Israelita at mga Amoreo.
15Nagpatuloy si Samuel sa pamumuno sa Israel sa buong buhay niya. 16Taun-taon, lumilibot siya mula Betel papuntang Gilgal at Mizpa para gampanan ang tungkulin niya bilang pinuno ng mga lugar na ito. 17Pero bumabalik din siya sa Rama kung saan siya nakatira at namumuno rin sa mga tao roon. At gumawa siya roon ng altar para sa Panginoon.
