1And the ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months. 2And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place. 3And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you. 4Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? 10¶ And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home: 11And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods. 12And the kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh. 13And they of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it. 14And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Beth-shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the LORD. 15And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD. 16And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day. 17And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering unto the LORD; for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Askelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one; 18And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-shemite.6.18 great…: or, great stone
19¶ And he smote the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter. 20And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?
21¶ And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.
Filistéerna återlämnar arken
1När Herrens ark varit i filistéernas land i sju månader, 2kallade filistéerna på sina präster och spåmän och frågade: ”Vad ska vi göra med Herrens ark? Hur ska vi bära oss åt för att sända den tillbaka?”
3De svarade: ”Om ni vill sända Israels Guds ark tillbaka, ska ni inte sända den utan gåvor. Ni måste skicka med ett skuldoffer till honom. Då ska ni bli friska och kommer att förstå varför han inte släppt sitt grepp om er.”
4”Vad för slags skuldoffer ska vi skicka?” frågade de. Prästerna och spåmännen svarade: ”Skicka fem bölder och fem råttor gjutna i guld, lika många som filistéernas hövdingar. Samma plåga har ju drabbat alla, även era hövdingar. 5Gör avbildningar av era bölder och av råttorna som fördärvar ert land och ge äran åt Israels Gud. Då släpper han kanske sitt grepp om er och era gudar och ert land. 6Varför förhärdar ni er så som farao och egypterna gjorde? Han behandlade dem hårt och ville inte låta israeliterna gå. 7Gör nu i ordning en ny vagn och spänn för två kor som nyligen har fått kalvar och aldrig har gått i ok och ta hem deras kalvar ifrån dem. 8Ställ sedan Herrens ark på vagnen och bredvid den ett skrin med de gjutna råttorna och bölderna i guld och låt den gå. 9Se efter noga: Om den går mot sitt eget område, till Bet Shemesh, då var det Herren som lät denna stora ondska drabba oss. Men om den inte gör det, då vet vi att det inte varit hans hand som slagit oss, utan att det hände av en slump.”
10Männen följde instruktionerna. Två kor som nyligen kalvat spändes för en vagn och deras kalvar togs ifrån dem. 11Sedan ställde man Herrens ark och skrinet med guldföremålen på vagnen. 12Korna gick direkt ut på vägen mot Bet Shemesh och de råmade medan de gick. Filistéernas hövdingar följde dem ända till gränsen vid Bet Shemesh.
13Invånarna i Bet Shemesh höll just på att skörda vete i dalen när de fick se arken komma och de fylldes av glädje när de såg den. 14Vagnen rullade in på en åker som tillhörde Josua och där stannade den vid en stor sten. De högg upp virket från vagnen och offrade korna som brännoffer till Herren. 15Leviterna lyfte ner arken och skrinet med guldföremålen och placerade dem på stenen. Den dagen offrade invånarna i Bet Shemesh brännoffer och slaktoffer till Herren.
16Filistéernas fem hövdingar såg på allt detta och återvände sedan till Ekron samma dag.
17De fem bölderna av guld hade filistéerna sänt som skuldoffer till Herren från Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gat och Ekron. 18Guldråttorna var lika många som de filistéiska städerna som de fem hövdingarna härskade över, befästa städer med kringliggande områden. Den stora stenen de ställde Herrens ark på står ännu i dag på Josuas åker i Bet Shemesh.
19Men Herren dödade 50 0706:19 Den hebreiska sifferkombinationen är ovanlig, ordagrant 70 man 50 000 man, men enligt vissa handskrifter bara sjuttio. Enligt Septuaginta börjar versen: Jekonjas släkt hade inte deltagit i folkets glädje i Bet Shemesh när de såg Herrens ark, och därför dödade… av männen i Bet Shemesh därför att de sett på arken och folket sörjde över att Herren hade dödat så många människor. 20”Vem kan bestå inför Herren, denne helige Gud?” utropade de. ”Till vem kan vi sända arken härifrån?”
21Sedan sände de budbärare till folket i Kirjat-Jearim och meddelade dem att filistéerna hade fört tillbaka Herrens ark. ”Kom och hämta arken!” bad de.
