1And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Eben-ezer unto Ashdod. 2When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3¶ And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again. 4And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.5.4 the stump…: or, the fishy part 5Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon’s house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
6But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof. 7And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god. 8They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither. 9And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
10¶ Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.5.10 us, to…: Heb. me to slay me and my 11So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.5.11 us not…: Heb. me not, and my 12And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
صندوق عهد در فلسطين
1-2فلسطينی‌ها صندوق عهد خدا را از ابن‌عزر به معبد بت خويش داجون، در شهر اشدود آوردند و آن را نزديک داجون گذاشتند. 3اما صبح روز بعد، هنگامی كه مردم شهر برای ديدن صندوق عهد خداوند رفتند، ديدند كه داجون در مقابل آن، رو به زمين افتاده است. آنها داجون را برداشته، دوباره سرجايش گذاشتند. 4ولی صبح روز بعد، باز همان اتفاق افتاد: آن بت در حضور صندوق عهد خداوند رو به زمين افتاده بود. اين بار سر داجون و دو دستش قطع شده و در آستانهٔ در بتكده افتاده بود، فقط تنهٔ آن سالم مانده بود. 5(به همين سبب است كه تا به امروز، كاهنان داجون و پرستندگانش به آستانهٔ در بتخانهٔ داجون در اشدود پا نمی‌گذارند.)
6خداوند اهالی اشدود و آبادی‌های اطراف آن را سخت مجازات كرد و بلای دمل به جان آنها فرستاد. 7وقتی مردم دريافتند كه چه اتفاقی افتاده، گفتند: «ديگر نمی‌توانيم صندوق عهد را بيش از اين در اينجا نگاه داريم، زيرا خدای اسرائيل همهٔ ما را با خدايمان داجون هلاک خواهد كرد.» 8پس آنها قاصدانی فرستاده، تمام رهبران فلسطينی را جمع كردند و گفتند: «با صندوق عهد خدای اسرائيل چه كنيم؟»
آنها جواب دادند: «آن را به جَت ببريد.» پس صندوق عهد را به جت بردند. 9اما وقتی صندوق به جت رسيد، خداوند اهالی آنجا را نيز از پير و جوان به بلای دمل دچار كرد. ترس و اضطراب همهٔ اهالی شهر را فرا گرفت. 10پس آنها صندوق عهد خدا را به عقرون فرستادند، اما چون اهالی عقرون ديدند كه صندوق عهد به نزد آنها آورده می‌شود فرياد برآوردند: «آنها صندوق عهد خدای اسرائيل را به اينجا می‌آورند تا ما را نيز نابود كنند.»
11اهالی عقرون، رهبران فلسطينی را احضار كرده گفتند: «صندوق عهد خدای اسرائيل را به جای خود برگردانيد و گرنه همهٔ ما را از بين می‌برد.» ترس و اضطراب تمام شهر را فرا گرفته بود، زيرا خدا آنها را هلاک می‌كرد. 12آنانی هم كه نمرده بودند به دمل مبتلا شدند. فرياد مردم شهر تا به آسمان بالا رفت.
