7¶ And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa. 9And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people. 10And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.
11¶ And when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul;31.11 of that: or, concerning him that 12All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there. 13And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

1Mittlerweile hatte zwischen den Philistern und den Israeliten auf dem Gilboagebirge die Schlacht begonnen. Die Israeliten versuchten zu fliehen, aber viele von ihnen kamen um.
2Die Philister hatten Saul und seine Söhne eingekesselt. Jonatan, Abinadab und Malkischua waren bereits getötet worden, 3um Saul tobte noch ein erbitterter Kampf. Er wurde von den Pfeilen der Bogenschützen getroffen und schwer verwundet.31,3 Oder: Als die Bogenschützen auf ihn anlegten, zitterte er sehr vor Angst. 4Da flehte er seinen Waffenträger an: »Zieh dein Schwert und töte mich! Sonst bringen mich diese unbeschnittenen Heiden um und treiben ihren Spott mit mir.« Doch der Waffenträger weigerte sich. Er wagte es nicht, den König umzubringen. Da nahm Saul selbst sein Schwert und stürzte sich hinein.
5Als der Diener sah, dass sein Herr tot war, ließ auch er sich in sein Schwert fallen und starb zusammen mit dem König. 6So fielen an diesem Tag Saul, seine drei Söhne, sein Waffenträger und alle seine Männer.
7Als die israelitischen Bewohner der Jesreel-Ebene und der umliegenden Gegend hörten, dass das Heer geflohen und Saul und seine Söhne gefallen waren, ergriffen auch sie die Flucht. Die Philister nahmen die verlassenen Städte in Besitz und wohnten darin.
8Am Tag nach der Schlacht kehrten die Philister noch einmal zum Schlachtfeld auf dem Gilboagebirge zurück, um die Gefallenen auszuplündern. Dabei fanden sie die Leichen von Saul und seinen drei Söhnen, die immer noch dort lagen. 9Sie schlugen Saul den Kopf ab und zogen ihm die Rüstung aus. Beides zeigten sie durch Boten im ganzen Land herum und verkündeten allen Bewohnern und den Götzen die Nachricht vom Sieg. 10Schließlich legten sie Sauls Waffen im Tempel der Göttin Astarte nieder. Seine Leiche und die Leichen seiner Söhne hängten sie an der Stadtmauer von Bet-Schean auf.
11Als die Einwohner von Jabesch-Gilead hörten, was die Philister mit Sauls Leiche getan hatten, 12machten sich sofort alle wehrfähigen Männer der Stadt auf den Weg. Sie marschierten die ganze Nacht hindurch nach Bet-Schean. Dort holten sie die Leichen von Saul und seinen Söhnen von der Stadtmauer herunter, brachten sie nach Jabesch und verbrannten sie dort. 13Die Gebeine begruben sie unter der großen Tamariske in Jabesch. Danach trauerten und fasteten sie eine Woche lang.
