1And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision. 2And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; 3And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; 4That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I. 5And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. 6And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. 7Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.3.7 Now…: or, Thus did Samuel before he knew the LORD, and before the word of the LORD was revealed unto him 8And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. 15¶ And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision. 16Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I. 17And he said, What is the thing that the Lord hath said unto thee? 19¶ And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. 20And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.3.20 established: or, faithful 21And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.

主に呼ばれたサムエル
1少年サムエルは、エリのもとで主に仕えていました。そのころ、主のことばが人に臨むことはまれでした。
2-3ある夜、年老いて目がかすんだエリが寝床に入り、サムエルも契約の箱を安置した宮で寝ていました。 4-5すると主が、「サムエル、サムエル」と呼びました。サムエルは、「はい。ここにいます」と答えて、「どうしたのだろう」と思って飛び起きると、エリのもとへ走って行き、「サムエルです。何かご用ですか」と尋ねました。エリはけげんな顔で、「呼んだりしていないよ。さあ、戻ってお休み」と答えました。そのとおりにすると、 6主がまたも、「サムエル」と呼んだのです。サムエルはまた飛び起きて、エリのもとへ駆けつけました。「はい。何かご用でしょうか。」「いいや、呼んだりしていないよ。いいから、帰ってお休み。」
7サムエルはまだ、主からおことばを頂いたことがなかったのです。 8ですから三度目に呼ばれた時も、またエリのもとへ駆けつけました。「はい。ご用でしょうか。」この時エリは、主が少年に語ったのだということを悟りました。 9そこで、彼はサムエルに言い聞かせました。「さあ、もう一度帰ってお休み。今度呼ばれたら、『はい、主よ。しもべは聞いております』と申し上げるのだよ。」サムエルは寝床に引き返しました。
10すると主が来られて、さっきのように、「サムエル、サムエル」と呼びました。そこでサムエルは、「はい。しもべは聞いております」と申し上げました。 11主はサムエルに告げました。「わたしは、イスラエルに衝撃的なことを行うつもりだ。 12エリに言っておいた恐ろしいことが全部、現実となるだろう。 13エリの家は永遠にさばかれると警告しておいた。それは、神を冒瀆する息子たちの行為を、エリは手をこまぬいて見ていたことの報いである。 14わたしは誓う。エリと息子の罪は、いけにえやささげ物をいくら積もうと、決して赦されない。」
15サムエルは朝まで寝床につき、それから、いつものように宮の扉を開けました。サムエルは、主のお告げをエリに話したものか、恐れためらいましたが、 16-17エリのほうがサムエルを呼んだのです。「サムエルよ。主は何とお告げになったのだ。包み隠さず話しておくれ。小指の先ほどでも隠してはいけないよ。そんなことをしたら、神様がきつく罰してくださるように。」
18サムエルは、告げられたとおりを残さずエリに打ち明けました。「それは主の御心だよ。どうか、主が最善と思われることがなるように」と、エリは答えました。
19サムエルは成長し、主が常に彼とともにおられました。人々は、サムエルのことばに真剣に耳を傾けました。 20こうして、北はダンから南はベエル・シェバに至るイスラエル全土に、サムエルが預言者になったことが知れ渡ったのです。 21それから主は、再びシロの宮でサムエルに声をかけました。サムエルは主のことばを、イスラエルのすべての民に伝えました。
