1Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors. 2Therefore David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the LORD said unto David, Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah. 3And David’s men said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines? 4Then David enquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand. 5So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah. 6And it came to pass, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down with an ephod in his hand.
7¶ And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath delivered him into mine hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars. 8And Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men.
9¶ And David knew that Saul secretly practised mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod. 10Then said David, O LORD God of Israel, thy servant hath certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake. 11Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O LORD God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy servant. And the LORD said, He will come down. 12Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver thee up.23.12 deliver: Heb. shut up
13¶ Then David and his men, which were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went whithersoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; and he forbare to go forth.
14And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand. 15And David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life: and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood.
16¶ And Jonathan Saul’s son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God. 17And he said unto him, Fear not: for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth. 18And they two made a covenant before the LORD: and David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house.
19¶ Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon?23.19 on…: Heb. on the right hand23.19 Jeshimon: or, the wilderness 20Now therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of thy soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him into the king’s hand. 21And Saul said, Blessed be ye of the LORD; for ye have compassion on me. 22Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see his place where his haunt is, and who hath seen him there: for it is told me that he dealeth very subtilly.23.22 haunt…: Heb. foot shall be 23See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah. 24And they arose, and went to Ziph before Saul: but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the plain on the south of Jeshimon. 25Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. 27¶ But there came a messenger unto Saul, saying, Haste thee, and come; for the Philistines have invaded the land.23.27 invaded…: Heb. spread themselves upon, etc 28Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place Sela-hammahlekoth.23.28 Sela-hammahlekoth: that is, The rock of divisions
29¶ And David went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds at En-gedi.
David räddar staden Keila
1En dag fick David reda på att filistéerna hade anfallit Keila och nu var i färd med att plundra tröskplatserna. 2Då frågade David Herren: ”Ska jag anfalla dem?” Herren svarade: ”Ja, gå till attack mot filistéerna och rädda Keila!” 3Men Davids män hade invändningar: ”Vi lever i fruktan redan här i Juda. Ska vi nu bli tvungna att gå till Keila för att strida mot hela den filistéiska armén?”
4David frågade då Herren än en gång, men Herren svarade på samma sätt: ”Gå ner till Keila, så ska jag överlämna filistéerna åt dig!” 5Då gick David och hans män ner till Keila och stred mot filistéerna. De förde bort filistéernas boskap och räddade Keilas befolkning. 6Evjatar, Achimeleks son som hade flytt till David följde också med till Keila och han hade efoden23:6 Se not till 2:18. med sig.
7Men Saul fick reda på att David var i Keila och sa: ”Gud har överlämnat David åt mig eftersom han har stängt in sig i en stad med starka portar!” 8Sedan mobiliserade Saul hela sin armé för att belägra Keila och omringa David och hans män.
9När David fick reda på Sauls plan mot honom, bad han prästen Evjatar att ta fram efoden. 10”Herre Israels Gud”, sa David. ”Jag har hört att Saul tänker komma och förgöra Keila för min skull. 11Kommer Keilas män att överlämna mig åt honom? Och tänker verkligen Saul komma hit som jag har hört? Herre Israels Gud, svara mig, din tjänare!” Herren svarade: ”Ja, han kommer.” 12”Och kommer Keilas män att utlämna mig till Saul?” frågade David. ”Ja, de kommer att utlämna dig”, svarade Herren.
David gömmer sig ute i vildmarken
13David och hans cirka 600 man lämnade därför Keila och vandrade från plats till plats. Men när Saul fick veta att David hade flytt från Keila, brydde han sig inte om att dra ut. 14David bodde sedan i bergfästena i bergslandet Sif. Saul sökte efter honom ständigt, men Gud lät honom inte hitta David.
15När David var i Horsha i Sifs öken, fick han höra att Saul var på väg för att döda honom. 16Men Jonatan, Sauls son, gick för att leta reda på David och när han fann honom, uppmuntrade han David att lita på Gud. 17”Var inte rädd”, sa Jonatan. ”Min far kommer aldrig att få tag i dig! Du ska bli Israels kung och jag kommer att bli din närmaste man. Det vet min far Saul också.” 18De slöt sedan ett förbund med varandra inför Herren. Och efter det återvände Jonatan hem, medan David stannade kvar i Horsha.
19Men några av Sifs män gick till Saul i Giva och sa: ”David gömmer sig bland bergfästena vid Horsha på Hakilahöjden söder om Jeshimon. 20Kom ner dit, konung, så ska vi se till att gripa honom åt dig!”
21”Herren ska välsigna er för er omtanke om mig”, sa Saul. 22”Gå genast och gör er beredda! Ta reda på var han rör sig och visar sig, för jag vet hur listig han är. 23Kartlägg alla hans gömställen och kom sedan tillbaka med säkra uppgifter. Då ska jag följa med er. Om han bara finns i området ska jag hitta honom, om jag så ska söka överallt i hela Juda!” 24Sedan återvände Sifs män hem före Saul.
David och hans män befann sig i öknen Maon, i ödemarken söder om Jeshimon. 25Saul och hans män sökte efter David. Men David fick reda på det och drog sig till klippan i Maons öken. Saul fick veta det och förföljde dem in i öknen. 26Saul gick på ena sidan av berget och David med sina män på den andra. David skyndade sig för att komma undan Saul. Saul och hans män kom allt närmare och försökte omringa och gripa David och hans män.
27Då kom en budbärare till Saul och sa: ”Skynda dig tillbaka! Filistéerna har gått till anfall mot landet igen!” 28Därför gav han upp förföljandet av David och gick för att möta filistéerna. Och ända sedan dess har den platsen kallats Skiljeklippan.
