1Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side. 4¶ And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh. 5The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.14.5 forefront: Heb. tooth 6And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few. 7And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart. 8Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them. 9If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.14.9 Tarry: Heb. Be still 10But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us. 11And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves. 12And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. 16And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another. 17Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there. 18And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.
19¶ And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.14.19 noise: or, tumult 20And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.14.20 assembled…: Heb. were cried together 21Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan. 22Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle. 23So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Beth-aven.
24¶ And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food. 25And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground. 26And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath. 27But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened. 28Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.14.28 faint: or, weary 29Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey. 30How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines? 31And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint. 32And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.
33¶ Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.14.33 transgressed: or, dealt treacherously 34And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. 36¶ And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God. 37And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day. 38And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.14.38 chief: Heb. corners 39For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him. 40Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee. 41Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not. 46Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.
47¶ So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them. 48And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.14.48 gathered…: or, wrought mightily 49Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchi-shua: and the names of his two daughters were these; the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal: 50And the name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.14.50 Abner: Heb. Jonathans heldendaad
1Op een dag zei Jonathan tegen zijn jonge wapenknecht: ‘Kom, we gaan naar de Filistijnse wachtpost aan de overkant van het dal.’ Hij vertelde zijn vader echter niets van zijn plan. 2Saul en zijn zeshonderd mannen lagen in hun kamp aan de rand van Gibea gegroepeerd rond de granaatappelboom bij Migron. 3Onder zijn mannen bevond zich ook Ahia, de zoon van Ahitub die een broer was van Ikabod, de kleinzoon van Pinechas en de achterkleinzoon van Eli. Ahia was priester van de Here in Silo en droeg het priesterkleed. Niemand had gemerkt dat Jonathan was verdwenen. 4Om bij de Filistijnse wachtpost te komen, moest Jonathan door een pas die tussen twee rotsen lag ingeklemd. De ene rots werd Bozez en de andere Senne genoemd. 5De noordelijke rots lag voor Michmas en de zuidelijke voor Geba. 6‘Vooruit, laten we die onbesneden heidenen eens een bezoekje gaan brengen,’ zei Jonathan tegen zijn wapenknecht. ‘Misschien zal de Here een wonder voor ons doen. Hij kan de redding geven door velen, maar ook door weinigen.’ 7‘Uitstekend,’ stemde zijn jonge metgezel enthousiast in. ‘Doe wat u goed lijkt, ik sta achter u en zal u trouw blijven.’ 8Jonathan ontvouwde zijn plan: 9‘Als zij ons zien en zeggen: “Blijf waar u bent totdat wij bij u zijn!”, blijven wij staan en wachten op hen. 10Maar als zij zeggen: “Kom hierheen!” doen we dat ook, want dat is het teken dat de Here ons de overwinning zal geven!’
11Toen de Filistijnen hen zagen komen, riepen zij: ‘Kijk! De Israëlieten kruipen uit hun holen!’ 12Zij riepen naar Jonathan: ‘Kom maar eens hier! We hebben je wat te vertellen!’ ‘Kom op, klim achter mij aan,’ riep Jonathan naar zijn wapenknecht, ‘want de Here zal ons helpen hen te verslaan!’ 13Zo klauterden zij op handen en voeten naar boven en de Filistijnen moesten terugwijken toen Jonathan en de jongen hen links en rechts neersloegen. 14Zij maakten ongeveer twintig slachtoffers, die verspreid lagen op een stuk grond van zoʼn vijfduizend vierkante meter. 15Er brak plotseling paniek uit in het hele Filistijnse leger en ook onder de plunderaars. Toen ook nog de aarde begon te beven, werd hun angst voor God nog groter.
16Sauls uitkijkposten in Gibea zagen in de verte iets vreemds gebeuren, het enorme Filistijnse leger vluchtte uiteen. 17‘Zoek eens uit wie wij hier missen,’ beval Saul. En na een snel onderzoek kwamen zij er achter dat Jonathan en zijn wapenknecht ontbraken. 18‘Breng de ark van God hier,’ riep Saul priester Ahia toe. Want de ark van God was op dat moment bij het volk Israël.
19Terwijl Saul met de priester stond te praten, werd het geschreeuw en tumult uit het Filistijnse kamp steeds luider, zodat Saul tegen de priester zei: ‘Trek uw hand terug en blijf waar u bent!’ 20Zonder te aarzelen stormden Saul en zijn zeshonderd mannen naar het strijdtoneel, waar de Filistijnen elkaar te lijf gingen en een vreselijke verwarring heerste. 21De Hebreeën die al lange tijd bij de Filistijnen waren en in hun leger dienden, keerden zich nu tegen hen en vochten aan de kant van de Israëlieten onder Saul en Jonathan. 22Ten slotte voegden ook de mannen die zich in het gebergte van Efraïm hadden verborgen, zich bij de achtervolgers, toen zij zagen dat de Filistijnen op de vlucht sloegen. 23Zo gaf de Here op die dag Israël de overwinning.
De strijd zette zich voort tot voorbij Bet-Aven. 24-25 Op een gegeven moment konden de Israëlieten bijna niet meer, want Saul had een vervloeking uitgesproken: ‘Wee degene die vóór de avond al iets eet. Eerst wil ik een totale overwinning behalen.’ Daarom at niemand die dag, ook al vonden zij honingraten in het veld vlakbij de bossen waar zij zich ophielden. 26Iedereen was bang voor Sauls vervloeking. 27Maar Jonathan wist niets van zijn vaders bevel. Hij stak een stok in een honingraat en nadat hij van de honing had gegeten, voelde hij zich een stuk beter. 28Iemand vertelde hem echter: ‘Uw vader heeft een vloek uitgesproken over ieder die vandaag zou eten en daardoor zijn alle mannen moe en zwak geworden.’ 29‘Hoe kan hij zoiets zeggen!’ riep Jonathan uit. ‘Zoʼn bevel brengt ons land alleen maar schade toe. Kijk eens hoe ík ben opgeknapt na het eten van dat kleine beetje honing. 30Als de mensen hadden mogen eten van het voedsel bij de buit, zou onze overwinning op de Filistijnen nog veel groter zijn geweest.’ 31Maar ook al waren ze hongerig, toch versloegen zij de hele dag Filistijnen van Michmas tot Ajalon. Zij voelden zich echter steeds meer verzwakken. 32Daarom stortten zij zich ten slotte op de buit en slachtten de schapen, ossen en kalveren en aten het vlees rauw op terwijl het bloed er nog in zat. 33Iemand ging naar Saul om te vertellen dat de mensen zondigden tegen de Here door vlees met bloed te eten. ‘Maar dat is je reinste ontrouw,’ zei Saul. ‘Rol een grote steen hiernaartoe, 34ga naar hen toe en zeg dat zij hun ossen en schapen hier moeten brengen om ze op deze steen te slachten en het bloed te laten weglopen en niet tegen de Here zondigen door het bloed te eten.’ Dat bevel werd uitgevoerd.
35Saul bouwde een altaar voor de Here, zijn eerste. 36Daarna zei hij: ‘Laten wij de Filistijnen de hele nacht blijven achtervolgen om ook de laatsten te vernietigen.’ ‘Prachtig,’ vonden zijn mannen. ‘Doe wat u het beste lijkt.’ Maar de priester zei: ‘Laten wij eerst vragen wat God daarvan vindt.’ 37Daarom vroeg Saul aan God: ‘Zullen wij de Filistijnen achterna gaan? Zult U ons helpen hen te verslaan?’ Maar de Here gaf hem geen antwoord. 38Toen zei Saul tegen de leiders: ‘Er is iets mis! We moeten er achter zien te komen welke zonde vandaag is begaan. 39Ik zweer bij de naam van God die Israël redde, dat de schuldige zal sterven, ook al is het mijn eigen zoon Jonathan!’ Maar niemand wilde hem iets vertellen. 40Toen stelde Saul voor: ‘Jonathan en ik zullen hier gaan staan en u moet allen daar gaan staan.’ Iedereen ging daarmee akkoord. 41Saul zei: ‘Here, God van Israël, wilt U ons de waarheid laten zien?’ Jonathan en Saul werden door het heilige lot als de schuldigen aangewezen. Het volk ging dus vrijuit. 42‘Werp nu het lot tussen mij en Jonathan,’ zei Saul. Jonathan werd aangewezen als de schuldige. 43‘Vertel mij wat je hebt gedaan,’ verlangde Saul van Jonathan. ‘Ik heb met de punt van mijn stok wat van de honing geproefd,’ bekende Jonathan. ‘Ik ben bereid te sterven.’ 44‘Ja, Jonathan,’ zei Saul, ‘jij moet sterven. Moge God mij doden als ik je hiervoor niet zou laten sterven.’ 45Maar daarmee waren de troepen het niet eens: ‘Zou Jonathan, die vandaag Israël heeft gered, moeten sterven? Daar komt niets van in! Wij zweren bij het leven van God dat geen haar van zijn hoofd zal worden gekrenkt, want God heeft hem vandaag gebruikt om een machtig wonder te doen.’ Zo redden zij Jonathan van de dood. 46Saul trok zich daarop met zijn leger terug en de Filistijnen gingen terug naar hun woonplaatsen.
47Nu Saul zijn positie als koning van Israël had verstevigd, stuurde hij zijn leger uit in alle windrichtingen om te strijden tegen Moab, Ammon, Edom, de koningen van Zoba en de Filistijnen. Waar hij ook maar ging, overal behaalde hij de overwinning. 48Hij verrichtte grote daden, overwon de Amalekieten en bevrijdde Israël van al diegenen die haar in het verleden hadden aangevallen. 49Saul had drie zonen: Jonathan, Jiswi en Malkisua. Hij had twee dochters, de oudste heette Merab en de jongste Michal. 50-51 Sauls vrouw heette Ahinoam en was een dochter van Ahimaäz. De bevelhebber van zijn leger was zijn neef Abner, een zoon van zijn oom Ner. Kis en Ner, de vaders van Saul en Abner, waren zonen van Abiël. 52Gedurende Sauls gehele leven waren de Israëlieten in oorlog met de Filistijnen. Elke keer als Saul een moedige en sterke jongeman tegenkwam, liet hij hem dienst nemen in zijn leger.
