5¶ And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth-aven. 6When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits. 7And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. 8¶ And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. 9And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering. 10And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.13.10 salute: Heb. bless
11¶ And Samuel said, What hast thou done? 17¶ And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual: 18And another company turned the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

2Sau-lơ tuyển chọn 3.000 quân tinh nhuệ trong đội quân Ít-ra-ên, và cho số quân còn lại về nhà. Ông đem 2.000 người được chọn cùng với mình đến Mích-ma và núi Bê-tên. Còn 1.000 người khác đi với con trai Sau-lơ là Giô-na-than đến Ghi-bê-a thuộc Bên-gia-min.
3Giô-na-than đem quân tấn công và đánh bại đồn Phi-li-tin ở Ghê-ba. Tin này được loan báo cho toàn thể người Phi-li-tin biết. Thấy vậy, Sau-lơ cho thổi kèn khắp lãnh thổ để kêu gọi dân chúng: “Hỡi người Hê-bơ-rơ, hãy nghe đây! Hãy đứng lên ra trận!” 4Toàn dân Ít-ra-ên nghe tin rằng Sau-lơ đã đánh bại đồn quân Phi-li-tin tại Ghinh-ganh, và người Phi-li-tin càng căm ghét người Ít-ra-ên hơn. Vì vậy toàn quân Ít-ra-ên tập trung tại Ghinh-ganh, cùng theo Sau-lơ chiến đấu.
5Người Phi-li-tin cũng huy động quân lực gồm 3.000 chiến xa, 6.000 kỵ binh, còn quân lính thì đông như cát biển! Đoàn quân này đóng ở Mích-ma, phía đông Bết-a-ven. 6Thấy lực lượng địch quá hùng hậu, người Ít-ra-ên hoảng sợ, đi trốn trong hang, trong bụi rậm, gành đá, mồ mả, và hầm hố. 7Cũng có người vượt Sông Giô-đan và trốn chạy vào vùng đất của Gát và Ga-la-át.
Sự Bất Tuân của Sau-lơ và Sự Khiển Trách của Sa-mu-ên
Lúc ấy, Sau-lơ vẫn còn ở Ghinh-ganh; quân sĩ theo ông đều run sợ. 8Sau-lơ chờ đợi bảy ngày theo lời Sa-mu-ên dặn, nhưng vẫn chưa thấy Sa-mu-ên đến Ghinh-ganh, còn quân sĩ thì dần dần bỏ trốn. 9Ông quyết định tự mình đứng ra dâng tế lễ thiêu và lễ tạ ơn.
10Nhưng khi Sau-lơ vừa dâng xong lễ thiêu, Sa-mu-ên đến. Sau-lơ đi ra đón chào ông, 11nhưng Sa-mu-ên hỏi: “Ông vừa làm gì vậy?”
Sau-lơ đáp: “Tôi thấy quân lính kéo nhau bỏ chạy, và ông không đến đúng hẹn, trong khi quân Phi-li-tin chuẩn bị cuộc chiến tại Mích-ma. 12Tôi tự nghĩ: ‘Quân Phi-li-tin sắp kéo đến tấn công tại Ghinh-ganh, mà ta chưa cầu xin Chúa Hằng Hữu phù hộ!’ Nên tôi đành miễn cưỡng dâng tế lễ thiêu.”
13Sa-mu-ên nói: “Ông thật điên rồ! Ông đã không tuân lệnh Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của mình. Đáng lẽ Chúa Hằng Hữu cho triều đại của ông được vững bền trên Ít-ra-ên mãi mãi. 14Nhưng bây giờ ngôi nước ông sẽ phải kết thúc, vì Chúa Hằng Hữu đã chọn được một người Ngài rất vừa ý. Chúa Hằng Hữu sẽ cho người ấy cai quản dân của Ngài, vì ông đã dám trái lệnh Chúa Hằng Hữu.”
Đội Quân Ít-ra-ên Bị Tổn Thất
15Nói xong Sa-mu-ên đứng dậy rời khỏi Ghinh-ganh và đi đến Ghi-bê-a thuộc đất Bên-gia-min. Sau-lơ kiểm lại số quân còn ở với mình, chỉ chừng 600 người! 16Sau-lơ cùng với Giô-na-than thu thập số quân còn lại, đến đóng ở Ghê-ba thuộc đất Bên-gia-min. Quân Phi-li-tin vẫn đóng ở Mích-ma. 17Từ đồn Phi-li-tin, có ba toán quân đột kích kéo ra. Một toán đi về hướng bắc đến Óp-ra thuộc Su-anh, 18một toán đi về hướng tây đến Bết-hô-rôn, và toán thứ ba đi về hướng biên giới gần hoang mạc, phía trên thung lũng Sê-bô-im.
19Lúc ấy, trong khắp đất Ít-ra-ên không có một người thợ rèn. Vì người Phi-li-tin sợ họ rèn gươm giáo, nên cấm ngặt không để cho người Hê-bơ-rơ rèn gươm và giáo. 20Cho nên, mỗi khi người Ít-ra-ên muốn rèn lưỡi cày, dao, lưỡi rìu, lưỡi liềm, đều phải đi mướn người Phi-li-tin. 21(Tiền công mài một lưỡi cày hay dao là 8 gam13:21 Nt 1 pim bạc, mài một lưỡi rìu, lưỡi liềm, hay mũi dót là 4 gam13:21 Nt 1/3 siếc-lơ bạc.) 22Vì thế, đám quân theo Sau-lơ và Giô-na-than chẳng ai có gươm giáo gì cả, chỉ cha con Sau-lơ có mà thôi.
