1Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee. 2And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel. 3And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.11.3 Give…: Heb. 4¶ Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.
5And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh. 6And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly. 7And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.11.7 with…: Heb. as one man 8And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. 9And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.11.9 help: or, deliverance 10Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you. 11And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
12¶ And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death. 13And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel. 14Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there. 15And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
Saul salva a cidade de Jabes
1Por essa altura, à frente do exército dos amonitas, Naás atacou a cidade israelita de Jabes-Gileade. Os cidadãos de Jabes, no entanto, pediram-lhe tréguas: “Faz connosco uma aliança de paz e te serviremos.”
2“Está bem!”, disse Naás. “Mas só na condição de esvaziar a cada um o olho direito para vergonha de toda a nação!”
3“Então dá-nos ao menos sete dias, para ver se conseguimos obter o auxílio de alguém em Israel”, foi a resposta dos anciãos de Jabes. “Se nenhum dos nossos irmãos vier socorrer-nos, aceitaremos a tua proposta.”
4Quando os mensageiros chegaram a Gibeá, a terra onde Saul vivia, e expuseram o apuro em que se encontravam, toda a gente desatou a chorar e a lamentar-se em voz alta. 5Saul tinha estado a lavrar no campo e regressava com os bois: “O que é que se passa? Para que é este choro todo?” Contaram-lhe então o que acontecera com as gentes de Jabes.
6Ao ouvir o relato, o Espírito de Deus desceu poderosamente sobre Saul que ficou extremamente irado. 7Pegou em dois bois, cortou-os em pedaços e enviou-os por todo o Israel. “Isto é o que vai acontecer aos bois de todo aquele que recusar seguir Saul e Samuel à batalha!”, anunciou. O Senhor fez com que o povo temesse a cólera de Saul e juntaram-se todos a ele como um só homem. 8Contou-os depois em Bezeque e eram 300 000, além dos de Judá que eram 30 000 homens.
9Mandou pois mensageiros a Jabes-Gileade que lhes dissessem: “Receberão ajuda amanhã antes do meio-dia.”
A alegria foi grande na cidade quando esta mensagem chegou. 10Os homens de Jabes disseram então astutamente aos seus inimigos: “Rendemo-nos. Amanhã vamos ter convosco e poderão fazer-nos o que vos apetecer.”
11Na manhã seguinte, logo muito cedo, Saul chegou, dividiu o exército em três destacamentos e caíram de surpresa sobre os amonitas lutando toda a manhã. Os que escaparam com vida foram perseguidos e não ficaram dois juntos.
Saul confirmado como rei
12Então o povo disse a Samuel: “Onde está essa gente que dizia que Saul não haveria de ser nosso rei? Sejam trazidos aqui para os matarmos!”
13Contudo, Saul respondeu: “Ninguém será castigado hoje, porque foi um dia em que o Senhor salvou a Israel!”
14Depois Samuel disse ao povo: “Venham, vamos todos a Gilgal confirmar Saul como nosso rei.” 15Ali, numa cerimónia solene perante o Senhor, consagraram-no rei. Depois ofereceram ofertas de paz ao Senhor. E Saul e todo o Israel celebraram felizes.
