1Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance? 2When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel’s sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?10.2 care: Heb. business 3Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Beth-el, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine: 4And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.10.4 salute…: Heb. ask thee of peace 5After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy: 6And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man. 7And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.10.7 And…: Heb. 14¶ And Saul’s uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel. 15And Saul’s uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you. 16And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.
17¶ And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh; 18And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you: 19And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands. 20And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken. 21When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found. 22Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff. 23And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward. 24And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.10.24 God…: Heb. 26¶ And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched. 27But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.10.27 held…: or, was as though he had been deaf
Saul tot koning gezalfd
1Daarop haalde Samuël een kruikje met olie tevoorschijn en goot de inhoud over Sauls hoofd, kuste hem en zei: ‘Ik doe dit omdat de Here u heeft aangewezen en gezalfd als koning van zijn volk Israël! 2Wanneer u hier straks weggaat, zult u twee mannen aantreffen bij Rachels graf in Zelzah, op de grens van het land van Benjamin. Zij zullen u vertellen dat de ezelinnen zijn teruggevonden en dat uw vader ongerust over u is en zich afvraagt hoe hij u weer kan terugvinden. 3Als u daarna bij de eik van Tabor komt, zult u daar drie mannen ontmoeten die op weg zijn om God te aanbidden in Betel. Een van hen zal drie bokjes dragen, een ander zal drie broden bij zich hebben en de derde zal een fles wijn hebben. 4Zij zullen u groeten en twee broden aanbieden, die u moet aannemen. 5Na die ontmoeting zult u een groep profeten tegenkomen bij Gibea, ook wel de heuvel van God genoemd, waar het Filistijnse garnizoen ligt. U zult hen van de heuvel naar beneden zien komen, voorafgegaan door muzikanten met harpen, fluiten, tamboerijnen en citers. Zij zullen al lopend profetieën uitspreken. 6Op dat moment zal de Geest van de Here met grote kracht over u komen, zodat u samen met hen gaat profeteren en u zult zich voelen en gedragen als een ander mens. 7Vanaf dat moment moet u beslissingen nemen op grond van wat u het beste lijkt onder de gegeven omstandigheden, want de Here zal dichtbij u zijn. 8Ga daarna naar Gilgal en wacht daar zeven dagen op mij. Dan zal ik bij u komen om de brandoffers en vredeoffers te brengen. Daar zal ik u verdere aanwijzingen geven.’
9Nadat zij afscheid hadden genomen en Saul op weg ging, gaf God hem een nieuw innerlijk. En alles wat Samuël had geprofeteerd, gebeurde diezelfde dag nog. 10Toen Saul en zijn dienaar bij Gibea aankwamen, zagen zij de profeten op hen afkomen. De Geest van God kwam over Saul en hij begon ook te profeteren. 11Toen de mensen die hem kenden dat hoorden, riepen zij verbaasd: ‘Wat is met de zoon van Kis gebeurd? Is Saul ook een profeet geworden?’ 12En een van zijn buren voegde daar nog aan toe: ‘Wie is zijn vader eigenlijk?’ Zo ontstond het gezegde: ‘Is Saul ook een profeet geworden?’ 13Toen Saul was opgehouden te profeteren, klom hij verder de heuvel op. 14‘Waar zaten jullie toch?’ vroeg de oom van Saul hem. ‘Wij waren de ezelinnen aan het zoeken, maar konden ze niet vinden. Daarom zijn we naar de profeet Samuël gegaan om hem te vragen waar ze waren,’ antwoordde Saul. 15‘Vertel mij eens wat hij tegen jullie heeft gezegd,’ zei zijn oom. 16‘Hij zei dat de ezelinnen terecht waren!’ antwoordde Saul. Maar wat Samuël had gezegd over het koningschap, vertelde hij hem niet.
17Hierna riep Samuël het hele volk Israël op om naar Mispa te komen 18en gaf hun de volgende boodschap van de Here: ‘Ik leidde u uit Egypte en verloste u uit de macht van de Egyptenaren en al die andere volken die u verdrukten. 19Maar ondanks dat Ik zoveel voor u heb gedaan, hebt u Mij toch afgewezen en gezegd: “Wij willen in uw plaats een koning!” Goed dan, stel u nu op voor het oog van de Here, onderverdeeld in stammen en families.’
20Daarop riep Samuël de stamleiders bijeen voor de Here en de stam van Benjamin werd door het lot aangewezen. 21Daarna bracht hij elke familie van de stam Benjamin voor de Here en daarbij werd de familie van Matri aangewezen. Ten slotte wees het lot Saul, de zoon van Kis, aan. Maar toen zij hem zochten, bleek hij nergens te vinden! 22Daarom vroegen zij de Here: ‘Waar is hij? Komt hij nog tevoorschijn?’ En de Here antwoordde: ‘Hij verbergt zich tussen de bagage.’ 23En ja, daar vonden zij hem. Toen hij tussen het volk stond, stak hij met kop en schouders boven iedereen uit. 24Samuël richtte zich toen tot de aanwezigen en zei: ‘Dit is de man die de Here als uw koning heeft uitgekozen. In heel Israël is er niemand zoals hij!’ Het hele volk juichte de koning toe. 25Samuël vertelde het volk wat de rechten en plichten van een koning waren. Hij schreef die op in een boek en legde dat in het heiligdom voor de Here neer. Toen stuurde hij iedereen terug naar huis.
26Op de terugweg naar zijn huis in Gibea werd Saul vergezeld door een groep mannen van wie God de harten had aangeraakt en die zijn vaste begeleiders werden. 27Toch waren er ook nietsnutten die riepen: ‘Hoe kan deze man ons nu redden?’ Zij verachtten hem en weigerden hem geschenken aan te bieden, maar Saul negeerde hen gewoon.
