1And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh’s daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the LORD, and the wall of Jerusalem round about. 2Only the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built unto the name of the LORD, until those days. 3And Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places. 4And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
5¶ In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. 6And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.3.6 mercy: or, bounty 7And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. 8And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. 9Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?3.9 understanding: Heb. hearing 10And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. 11And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;3.11 long life: Heb. many days3.11 discern: Heb. hear 12Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee. 13And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.3.13 shall…: or, hath not been 14And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days. 15And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.
16¶ Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him. 17And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. 18And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house. 19And this woman’s child died in the night; because she overlaid it. 20And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. 21And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear. 22And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king. 23Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living. 24And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. 25And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. 26Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. درخواست سليمان از خدا
(دوم تواريخ 1:2-13)
1سليمان با فرعون مصر پيمان دوستی بسته، دختر او را به همسری گرفت و به شهر داوود آورد تا بنای كاخ سلطنتی خود و نيز خانه خداوند و ديوار شهر اورشليم را تمام كند. 2در آن زمان، قوم اسرائيل به بالای تپه‌ها می‌رفتند و روی قربانگاه‌های آنجا قربانی می‌كردند، چون هنوز خانهٔ خداوند ساخته نشده بود. 3سليمان خداوند را دوست می‌داشت و مطابق دستورات پدر خود عمل می‌كرد ولی او هم به بالای تپه‌ها می‌رفت و در آنجا قربانی می‌كرد و بخور می‌سوزانيد.
4يكبار سليمان برای قربانی كردن به جبعون رفت. معروفترين قربانگاه در آنجا قرار داشت و او هزار گاو و گوسفند در آن محل قربانی كرد. 5آن شب در جبعون خداوند در عالم خواب به او ظاهر شد و فرمود: «از من چه می‌خواهی تا به تو بدهم؟»
6سليمان گفت: «تو به پدرم داوود بسيار محبت نشان دادی چون او نسبت به تو صادق و امين بود و قلب پاكی داشت. به او پسری بخشيدی كه امروز بر تختش نشسته است. با اين كار، لطف خود را در حق او كامل كردی! 7ای خداوند، خدای من، تو مرا به جای پدرم داوود به پادشاهی رسانيده‌ای، در حالی که من خود را برای رهبری يک قوم، بسيار كوچک و بی‌تجربه می‌دانم. 8حال كه رهبری قوم برگزيدهٔ تو با اين همه جمعيت بی‌شمار به عهدهٔ من است، 9به من حكمت عطا كن تا بتوانم نيک و بد را تشخيص بدهم و با عدالت بر مردم حكومت كنم؛ و گرنه چطور می‌توانم اين قوم بزرگ را اداره كنم؟»
10خداوند درخواست سليمان را بسيار پسنديد و خشنود شد كه سليمان از او حكمت خواسته است. 11پس به سليمان فرمود: «چون تو حكمت خواستی تا با عدالت حكومت كنی و عمر طولانی يا ثروت فراوان برای خود و يا مرگ دشمنانت را از من نخواستی، 12پس هر چه طلب كردی به تو می‌دهم. من به تو فهم و حكمتی می‌بخشم كه تاكنون به كسی نداده‌ام و نخواهم داد. 13در ضمن چيزهايی را هم كه نخواستی به تو می‌دهم، يعنی ثروت و افتخار را، به طوری كه در طول زندگی‌ات هيچ پادشاهی به پای تو نخواهد رسيد. 14اگر مثل پدرت داوود از من اطاعت كنی و دستورات مرا پيروی نمايی آنگاه عمر طولانی نيز به تو خواهم بخشيد!»
15وقتی سليمان بيدار شد فهميد كه خدا در خواب با او سخن گفته است. پس به اورشليم رفت و به خيمهٔ عبادت وارد شده، در برابر صندوق عهد خداوند ايستاد و قربانیهای سوختنی و سلامتی به خداوند تقديم كرد. سپس برای تمام درباريان خود، ضيافتی بزرگ ترتيب داد.
داوری عادلانهٔ سليمان
16چندی بعد دو فاحشه برای حل اختلاف خود به حضور پادشاه آمدند. 17يكی از آنان گفت: «ای پادشاه، ما دو نفر در يک خانه زندگی می‌كنيم. چندی قبل من فرزندی به دنيا آوردم. 18سه روز بعد از من، اين زن هم فرزندی زاييد. كسی جز ما در آن خانه نبود. 19يک شب كه او خواب بود، روی بچه‌اش افتاد و بچه‌اش خفه شد! 20نصف شب وقتی من در خواب بودم، او برخاست و پسر مرا از كنارم برداشت و پيش خودش برد و بچهٔ مردهٔ خود را در بغل من گذاشت. 21صبح زود كه برخاستم بچه‌ام را شير بدهم ديدم مرده است. وقتی با دقت به او نگاه كردم متوجه شدم كه آن كودک پسر من نيست.»
22زن دوم حرف او را قطع كرد و گفت: «اينطور نيست، بچهٔ مرده مال اوست و اينكه زنده است پسر من است.»
زن اولی گفت: «نه، آنكه مرده است مال تو است و اينكه زنده است مال من است.» و در حضور پادشاه به مجادله پرداختند.
23پس پادشاه گفت: «بگذاريد ببينم حق با كيست. هر دو شما می‌گوييد: بچهٔ زنده مال من است، و هر دو هم می‌گوييد: بچهٔ مرده مال من نيست!»
24سپس پادشاه دستور داد شمشيری بياورند. پس يک شمشير آوردند. 25آنگاه سليمان فرمود: «طفل زنده را دو نصف كنيد و به هر كدام يک نصف بدهيد!»
26زنی كه مادر واقعی بچه بود دلش بر پسرش سوخت و به پادشاه التماس كرده گفت: «ای پادشاه بچه را نكشيد. او را به اين زن بدهيد!»
ولی زن ديگر گفت: «نه، بگذار او را تقسيم كنند تا نه مال من باشد و نه مال تو!»
27آنگاه پادشاه فرمود: «بچه را نكشيد! او را به اين زن بدهيد كه نمی‌خواهد بچه كشته شود؛ چون مادرش همين زن است!»
28اين خبر به سرعت در سراسر اسرائيل پيچيد و تمام مردم فهميدند كه خدا به سليمان حكمت بخشيده تا بتواند عادلانه داوری كند. پس برای او احترام زيادی قايل شدند.
