1And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh’s daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the LORD, and the wall of Jerusalem round about. 2Only the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built unto the name of the LORD, until those days. 3And Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places. 4And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
5¶ In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. 6And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.3.6 mercy: or, bounty 7And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. 8And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. 9Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?3.9 understanding: Heb. hearing 10And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. 11And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;3.11 long life: Heb. many days3.11 discern: Heb. hear 12Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee. 13And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.3.13 shall…: or, hath not been 14And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days. 15And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.
16¶ Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him. 17And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. 18And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house. 19And this woman’s child died in the night; because she overlaid it. 20And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. 21And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear. 22And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king. 23Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living. 24And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. 25And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. 26Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.3.26 yearned: Heb. were hot 27Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof. 28And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.3.28 in him: Heb. in the midst of him
지혜를 구하는 솔로몬
1솔로몬은 이집트 왕 바로와 우호 조약을 맺고 그의 딸과 결혼하여 아내를 예 루살렘으로 데리고 왔다. 그는 그의 궁전과 성전을 짓고 예루살렘 주변의 성벽을 다 쌓을 때까지 그녀를 다윗성에서 살게 하였다.
2이 때는 여호와의 성전이 아직 건축되지 않았기 때문에 이스라엘 백성들은 산 위에 쌓은 여러 제단에서 제사를 지내는 실정이었다.
3솔로몬은 여호와를 사랑하고 자기 아버지 다윗의 모든 교훈을 거울삼아 살았으나 그는 여전히 산당에서 제사를 드리고 분향하였다.
4당시에 가장 유명한 산당은 기브온에 있었으므로 솔로몬왕은 기브온으로 가서 3:4 또는 ‘일천 번제를 드렸다’1,000마리의 짐승을 잡아 번제를 드렸다.
5그 날 밤 여호와께서 꿈에 솔로몬에게 나타나 “내가 너에게 무엇을 주었으면 좋겠는지 말해 보아라” 하고 말씀하셨다.
6그래서 솔로몬은 이렇게 대답하였다. “주께서는 주의 종 내 아버지 다윗에게 언제나 크신 사랑을 베푸셨습니다. 내 아버지께서 정직하고 진실하게 살며 주께 충성을 다하였으므로 주께서는 한결같은 은혜를 베푸셔서 오늘날처럼 왕위를 이을 아들을 그에게 주셨습니다.
7나의 하나님 여호와여, 이제 주께서 나의 아버지 다윗을 이어 나를 왕이 되게 하셨는데 아직 나는 어린 아이와 같아서 내 직무를 어떻게 수행해야 할지 모르고 있습니다.
8게다가 내가 다스릴 주의 택한 백성들은 그 수가 헤아릴 수 없을 만큼 많습니다.
9그러므로 주의 백성들을 잘 다스리고 선과 악을 분별할 수 있는 지혜로운 마음을 나에게 주소서. 그렇지 않으면 내가 어떻게 이처럼 많은 주의 백성을 다스릴 수 있겠습니까?”
10솔로몬이 지혜를 구하므로 여호와께서는 기뻐하시며
11그에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “너는 오래 살게 해 달라거나 부를 얻게 해 달라거나 아니면 네 원수들을 죽여 달라는 요구를 할 수도 있었다. 그러나 네가 자신을 위해서 이런 것을 구하지 않고 다만 내 백성을 바르게 다스릴 지혜를 구하였으니
12내가 네 요구대로 지혜롭고 총명한 마음을 너에게 주어 역사상에 너와 같은 자가 없도록 하겠다.
13그리고 나는 또 네가 요구하지 않은 부귀와 명예도 너에게 주어 네 평생에 너와 같은 왕이 없도록 하겠다.
14만일 네가 네 아버지 다윗처럼 나에게 순종하고 내 법과 명령을 지키면 내가 너를 오래오래 살도록 하겠다.”
15솔로몬이 눈을 떠 보니 그것은 꿈이었다. 그는 예루살렘으로 돌아와 여호와의 법궤 앞에 서서 번제와 화목제를 드린 다음 그의 모든 신하들을 초청하여 큰 잔치를 베풀었다. 솔로몬의 지혜로운 재판
16그 후 두 창녀가 시빗거리로 왕을 찾아와서
17한 창녀가 이렇게 말하였다. “임금님, 우리는 다 같이 한집에 살고 있습니다. 최근에 우리는 모두 아들을 낳았는데
18제가 아이를 낳은 지 3일 만에 이 여자도 아이를 낳았습니다. 그때 집 안에는 아무도 없었고 우리 둘만 있었습니다.
19그런데 어느 날 밤 이 여자는 잠을 자다가 자기 아이를 깔아 뭉개 죽이고 말았습니다.
20그러자 이 여자는 밤중에 일어나 내가 잠을 자는 사이에 내 곁에 누워 있는 내 아들과 죽은 자기 아들을 바꾸었습니다.
21다음날 아침에 일어나 젖을 먹이려고 보니 아이가 죽어 있지 않겠습니까! 그러나 날이 밝아 좀더 자세히 보니 그 아이는 내 아들이 아니었습니다.”
22그때 다른 여자가 “아니야, 살아 있는 아이가 내 아들이고 죽은 아이는 네 아들이야” 하고 우겨대자 이번에는 처음 여자가 “아니야, 죽은 아이가 네 아들이고 산 아이는 내 아들이야” 하며 왕 앞에서 서로 다투었다.
23그러자 왕은 “너희가 살아 있는 아이를 서로 자기 아들이라고 말하고 죽은 아이는 서로 남의 아들이라 주장하는구나” 하며
24칼을 가져오게 한 다음
25“산 아이를 둘로 잘라서 한쪽씩 나누어 주어라” 하고 명령하였다.
26그러자 그 아이의 진짜 어머니는 자기 아들에 대한 사랑으로 마음이 찢어질 것 같아서 왕에게 “임금님, 그건 안 됩니다. 제발 그 아이를 죽이지 마시고 저 여자에게 주십시오” 하였다. 그러나 다른 여자는 “좋다. 어차피 네 아이도 내 아이도 안 될 바에야 차라리 둘로 잘라 나누어 가지자” 하였다.
27이때 왕은 “그 아이를 죽이지 말고 아이를 살려 달라고 애걸하는 저 여자에게 주어라. 그녀가 저 아이의 진짜 어머니이다” 하고 판결하였다.
28이 소문이 온 이스라엘 땅에 퍼지자 백성들은 하나님이 솔로몬에게 놀라운 지혜를 주신 줄 알고 두려운 마음으로 그를 우러러보았다.
