22¶ And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee. 23And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. 24And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms: 25And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day. 30But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. 31¶ And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life. 32So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother. 33Now the men did diligently observe whether any thing would come from him, and did hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Ben-hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot. 34And Ben-hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him. 37Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. 5แล้วทูตกลับมาแจ้งอีกว่า “เบนฮาดัดตรัสว่า ‘เราส่งคนมาเรียกร้องเอาเงินและทอง มเหสี โอรส ธิดาของท่าน 6แต่พรุ่งนี้เวลาเดียวกันนี้ เราจะส่งคนมาตรวจดูราชวังของท่าน และบ้านเรือนของข้าราชการ แล้วจะริบเอาของมีค่าทุกอย่างไปจากท่าน’ ”
7กษัตริย์อิสราเอลจึงเรียกชุมนุมผู้อาวุโสทั้งหมดและตรัสกับพวกเขาว่า “ดูชายคนนี้สิ เขาพาลหาเรื่องเรา เมื่อเขามาเรียกร้องเอามเหสี โอรสธิดา เงินและทองของเรา เราก็ไม่ขัดขืน”

10แล้วเบนฮาดัดมีพระดำรัสมาถึงอาหับอีกว่า “ขอให้เทพเจ้าทั้งหลายจัดการกับเราอย่างหนัก หากในสะมาเรียยังเหลือฝุ่นพอให้คนของเราคนละกำมือ”
11กษัตริย์อิสราเอลตอบกลับไปว่า “จงทูลพระองค์ว่า ‘ยังไม่รู้แพ้รู้ชนะอย่าเพิ่งคุยโว’ ”20:11 หรือคนที่เพิ่งสวมชุดเกราะ อย่าคุยโวเหมือนคนที่ถอดชุดแล้ว
12พระดำรัสตอบนี้มาถึงขณะที่เบนฮาดัดและกษัตริย์ทั้งหลายกำลังดื่มกันอยู่ในพลับพลาที่ประทับ20:12 หรือในสุคคทเช่นเดียวกับข้อ 16 เบนฮาดัดตรัสสั่งคนของตนว่า “เตรียมบุกโจมตี” พวกเขาก็เตรียมทัพเข้าโจมตีเมืองนั้น

14อาหับตรัสถามว่า “แต่ใครจะเป็นผู้ทำการครั้งนี้”
ผู้เผยพระวจนะตอบว่า “องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสว่า ‘บรรดาทหารหนุ่มจากเหล่าผู้บัญชาการภูมิภาคต่างๆ’ ”
อาหับตรัสถามว่า “ใครจะเป็นผู้เริ่มรบ?”
ผู้เผยพระวจนะทูลตอบว่า “ฝ่าพระบาทนั่นแหละ”
15อาหับจึงทรงรวบรวมบรรดาทหารหนุ่มจากเหล่าผู้บัญชาการภูมิภาคต่างๆ ได้ 232 คน แล้วระดมกำลังพลอิสราเอลได้ทั้งสิ้น 7,000 คน 16ประมาณเที่ยงวัน ขณะที่เบนฮาดัดและบรรดากษัตริย์พันธมิตรอีก 32 องค์กำลังมึนเมาอยู่ในที่ประทับ 17บรรดาทหารหนุ่มจากเหล่าผู้บัญชาการภูมิภาคก็บุกขึ้นหน้าไปก่อน
พลรักษาการณ์ที่เบนฮาดัดวางไว้ทูลรายงานว่า “มีกองทหารรุกมาจากสะมาเรีย”
18เบนฮาดัดตรัสสั่งว่า “ไม่ว่าพวกเขามาอย่างสันติหรือมาทำศึกก็ให้จับเป็น”
19บรรดาทหารหนุ่มจากเหล่าผู้บัญชาการภูมิภาคเคลื่อนพลออกจากเมืองโดยมีกองทัพตามไป 20แต่ละคนต่างสังหารข้าศึก คนอารัมพ่ายหนีและคนอิสราเอลก็รุกตาม ฝ่ายกษัตริย์เบนฮาดัดแห่งอารัมและพลม้าบางคนขี่ม้าหนีไปได้ 21แต่กษัตริย์แห่งอิสราเอลก็รุกคืบหน้าเข้ายึดม้าศึกและรถม้าศึกไว้ และกองทหารอารัมต้องพ่ายแพ้ยับเยิน
22หลังจากนั้นผู้เผยพระวจนะมาเข้าเฝ้ากษัตริย์อาหับแห่งอิสราเอลและทูลว่า “ขอทรงเสริมกำลังที่มั่นและตรวจตราดูว่าจะต้องทำอะไรอีกบ้างเพราะกษัตริย์แห่งอารัมจะกลับมาโจมตีอีกในฤดูใบไม้ผลิครั้งต่อไป”
23ขณะเดียวกันบรรดาข้าราชการของกษัตริย์แห่งอารัมทูลแนะนำว่า “พระเจ้าของพวกเขาเป็นเทพเจ้าแห่งขุนเขา พวกเขาจึงแข็งแกร่งเกินกำลังของเรา แต่หากสู้รบกันบนที่ราบ เราย่อมจะแข็งแกร่งกว่าพวกเขาแน่นอน 24ครั้งนี้ขอให้พวกแม่ทัพไปแทนกษัตริย์ทั้งหลาย 25ฝ่าพระบาทต้องระดมทัพขึ้นมาใหม่เหมือนทัพที่สูญเสียไปนั้น พร้อมด้วยม้าศึกและรถม้าศึกจำนวนเท่าเดิม แล้วพวกข้าพระบาทจะสู้รบกับอิสราเอลในที่ราบได้ เราจะแข็งแกร่งกว่าพวกเขาอย่างแน่นอน” เบนฮาดัดทรงเห็นด้วยและทำตามที่พวกเขาทูล
26ในฤดูใบไม้ผลิต่อมาเบนฮาดัดทรงเกณฑ์ทัพอารัมยกมาที่อาเฟคเพื่อรบกับอิสราเอล 27ฝ่ายอิสราเอลก็ระดมพล และแจกเสบียง แล้วเข้าสู่สนามรบ กองทัพอิสราเอลตั้งค่ายประจันหน้าแลดูเหมือนฝูงแพะเล็กๆ สองฝูงเมื่อเทียบกับกองกำลังมืดฟ้ามัวดินของอารัม
28คนของพระเจ้ามาเข้าเฝ้าและทูลกษัตริย์อิสราเอลว่า “องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสว่า ‘เนื่องจากคนอารัมคิดว่าองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าเป็นเทพเจ้าแห่งขุนเขา ไม่ใช่เทพเจ้าแห่งที่ราบ เราจะมอบกองทัพมหึมานี้ไว้ในมือของเจ้า แล้วเจ้าจะได้รู้ว่าเราคือพระยาห์เวห์’ ”
29กองทัพทั้งสองตั้งค่ายประจันหน้ากันเป็นเวลาเจ็ดวัน แล้วในวันที่เจ็ดก็เปิดฉากรบ ในวันนั้นชาวอิสราเอลฆ่าทหารราบของซีเรียไป 100,000 คน 30ที่เหลือหนีเข้าเมืองอาเฟค ซึ่งกำแพงเมืองทลายลงมาทับพวกเขา 27,000 คน เบนฮาดัดหลบหนีเข้าไปในเมืองและซ่อนตัวอยู่ในห้องชั้นในแห่งหนึ่ง
31บรรดาข้าราชการของพระองค์ทูลว่า “พวกข้าพระบาทได้ยินมาว่าบรรดากษัตริย์อิสราเอลนั้นมีจิตใจเมตตา ขอให้พวกข้าพระบาทนุ่งผ้ากระสอบ เอาเชือกคาดศีรษะไปเข้าเฝ้ากษัตริย์อิสราเอล เผื่อพระองค์จะทรงไว้ชีวิตฝ่าพระบาท”
32แล้วพวกเขาก็นุ่งผ้ากระสอบ เอาเชือกคาดศีรษะ ไปเข้าเฝ้ากษัตริย์อิสราเอล และทูลว่า “เบนฮาดัดผู้รับใช้ของฝ่าพระบาททูลวิงวอนว่า ‘ขอโปรดไว้ชีวิตข้าพเจ้าด้วยเถิด’ ”
กษัตริย์ตรัสว่า “เขายังมีชีวิตอยู่หรือ? เขาเป็นน้องของเรา”
33คนเหล่านั้นรีบฉวยโอกาสทูลว่า “พระเจ้าข้า เบนฮาดัดพระอนุชาของพระองค์!”
กษัตริย์ตรัสว่า “ไปรับตัวเขามา” เมื่อเบนฮาดัดมาถึง อาหับก็เชิญให้ประทับร่วมกันในราชรถ
34เบนฮาดัดทูลเสนอว่า “ข้าพเจ้าจะคืนหัวเมืองต่างๆ ที่เสด็จพ่อของข้าพเจ้ายึดมาจากเสด็จพ่อของท่าน และท่านจะตั้งแหล่งค้าขายในเมืองดามัสกัสเหมือนที่บิดาของข้าพเจ้าตั้งในเมืองสะมาเรียก็ได้”
อาหับตรัสว่า “เราจะปล่อยท่านไปตามเงื่อนไขของสนธิสัญญานี้” ทั้งสองจึงทำสนธิสัญญากัน แล้วอาหับก็ปล่อยเบนฮาดัดไป
อาหับถูกตัดสินโทษ
35บุตรของผู้เผยพระวจนะคนหนึ่งกล่าวกับเพื่อนตามพระดำรัสขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าว่า “ทำร้ายข้าพเจ้าเถิด” แต่คนนั้นปฏิเสธ
36ผู้เผยพระวจนะจึงกล่าวว่า “เพราะท่านไม่ได้เชื่อฟังองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า สิงโตตัวหนึ่งจะฆ่าท่านทันทีที่ท่านจากข้าพเจ้าไป” เมื่อคนนั้นเดินจากไปก็มีสิงโตออกมาทำร้ายเขาถึงแก่ชีวิต
37แล้วผู้เผยพระวจนะนั้นกล่าวกับอีกคนหนึ่งว่า “ทำร้ายข้าพเจ้าเถิด” เขาก็ทำตามและทำให้ผู้เผยพระวจนะนั้นบาดเจ็บ 38ผู้เผยพระวจนะนั้นเอาแถบผ้าปิดตาเพื่อปลอมตัว แล้วไปยืนคอยเฝ้ากษัตริย์อยู่ริมทาง 39ขณะที่กษัตริย์เสด็จผ่านมา ผู้เผยพระวจนะทูลว่า “ข้าพระบาทไปรบ มีคนเอาตัวเชลยมาฝากข้าพระบาทไว้บอกว่า ‘คอยดูคนนี้ให้ดี ถ้าเขาหนีไป เจ้าจะต้องตายหรือไม่ก็จ่ายเงินมา ประมาณ 34 กิโลกรัม20:39 ภาษาฮีบรูว่า1 ตะลันต์’ 40ขณะที่ข้าพระบาทกำลังง่วนอยู่กับธุระอื่น เชลยคนนั้นก็หายตัวไปแล้ว”
กษัตริย์อิสราเอลตรัสว่า “ดีแล้วนี่ เป็นความผิดของเจ้าเอง เจ้าต้องชดใช้”
41แล้วผู้เผยพระวจนะดึงแถบผ้าที่ปิดตาออก กษัตริย์อิสราเอลก็ทรงจำได้ว่าเป็นผู้เผยพระวจนะคนหนึ่ง 42ผู้เผยพระวจนะจึงทูลกษัตริย์ว่า “องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสว่า ‘เนื่องจากเจ้าไว้ชีวิตผู้ที่เรากำหนดให้ตาย20:42 คำนี้ในภาษาฮีบรูหมายถึง สิ่งของหรือบุคคลที่ถวายแด่องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า แล้วไม่อาจเรียกคืนได้ มักจะต้องทำลายให้หมดสิ้นไป ฉะนั้นเจ้าจะต้องตายแทนเขา และประชาชนของเจ้าจะต้องพินาศแทนประชาชนของเขา’ ” 43กษัตริย์อิสราเอลจึงเสด็จกลับสู่ที่ประทับในสะมาเรียด้วยความกริ้วและขุ่นเคืองพระทัย
