1And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king. 2And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;) 3That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying, 4Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee. 5And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.
6¶ And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people? 7And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever. 8But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him: 9And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter? 10And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins. 11And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12¶ So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day. 13And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;12.13 roughly: Heb. hardly 14And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 15Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16¶ So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents. 17But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.12.18 made…: Heb. strengthened himself 19So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.12.19 rebelled: or, fell away 20And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
21¶ And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon. 22But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying, 23Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying, 24Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.
25¶ Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel. 26And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David: 27If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah. 28Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 29And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other put he in Dan. 30And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan. 31And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi. 32And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. Upproret mot Rehabeam
(2 Krön 10:1-19)
1Rehabeam gick till Shekem, där alla israeliterna hade samlats för att göra honom till kung. 2När Jerobeam, Nevats son, fick höra det – han var då i Egypten, dit han hade flytt undan kung Salomo – återvände han från Egypten. 3Man skickade bud efter honom och han och hela det församlade Israel gick till Rehabeam och sa: 4”Din far gjorde vårt ok tungt. Gör nu arbetsbördan lättare för oss, det tunga ok din far lade på oss, så ska vi tjäna dig!” 5Rehabeam svarade: ”Gå och kom tillbaka till mig om tre dagar!” Så gick folket sin väg.
6Sedan rådgjorde kung Rehabeam med de äldre män som hade varit i tjänst hos hans far Salomo medan han levde. ”Vad råder ni mig att svara dessa människor?” frågade han.
7”Om du idag blir detta folks tjänare och ger dem ett välvilligt svar kommer de alltid att tjäna dig”, svarade de.
8Men Rehabeam avfärdade de äldres råd och frågade de yngre männen som hade vuxit upp tillsammans med honom och som nu var i hans tjänst. 9Han frågade dem: ”Vad råder ni mig att ge dessa människor för svar? De begär att jag ska lätta på det ok min far lade på dem.”
10De unga männen som vuxit upp tillsammans med honom svarade: ”Du ska säga så här till dem som säger till dig att din far har lagt ett tungt ok på dem, men lätta du på det: ’Mitt lillfinger12:10 Ordagrant: min lille, kan också tolkas som min lem. I vilket fall som helst är det tänkt som symbol Rehabeams manliga styrka. är tjockare än min fars midja. 11Min far lade på er ett tungt ok, men jag ska göra det ännu tyngre. Min far använde ris mot er, men jag ska använda skorpiongissel.’ ”
12Efter tre dagar återvände Jerobeam och hela folket till Rehabeam som kungen hade sagt att de skulle göra. 13Kungen gav då folket ett hårt svar och förkastade det råd som de äldre gett honom 14och följde de unga männens råd och svarade: ”Min far gjorde ert ok tungt, men jag ska göra det ännu tyngre. Min far använde ris mot er, men jag ska använda skorpiongissel.”
15Kungen lyssnade inte till folket. Herren styrde det så att det ord skulle gå i uppfyllelse som Herren hade uttalat till Jerobeam, Nevats son, genom Achia från Shilo.
16När hela Israel insåg att kungen inte lyssnade på dem, svarade de:
”Vad har vi för del i David?
Vi delar inget med Jishajs son.
Dra hem, Israel!
Se om ditt hus själv, David!”
Så gick israeliterna hem. 17Men Rehabeam regerade över de israeliter som bodde i Judas städer. 18När kung Rehabeam skickade ut Adoram som var ansvarig för tvångsarbetena, stenade israeliterna honom till döds. Kung Rehabeam lyckades rädda sig i sin vagn och fly till Jerusalem. 19Israel bröt med Davids ätt och de är skilda än idag.
20När Israels folk fick höra att Jerobeam hade återvänt från Egypten, skickade de efter honom och kallade honom till ett möte med hela folket. Där gjorde de honom till kung över Israel. Det var bara Judas stam12:20 Enligt Septuaginta: Judas och Benjamins stam som höll sig till Davids familj.
21Vid sin ankomst till Jerusalem mönstrade Rehabeam Juda och Benjamins arméer, 180 000 utvalda soldater, för att strida mot Israel och återfå kungamakten åt Salomos son Rehabeam. 22Men Guds ord kom till gudsmannen Shemaja:
23”Säg till kung Rehabeam av Juda, Salomos son, och till alla i Juda och Benjamin och det övriga folket: 24’Så säger Herren: ”Ni ska inte dra ut och strida mot era bröder, Israels folk! Vänd tillbaka hem, var och en till sitt, för det som har hänt kommer från mig!” ’ ”
Då lydde de Herrens ord och återvände till sitt, så som Herren befallt.
Jerobeam leder Israel in i avguderi
(2 Krön 11:1-4)
25Jerobeam befäste Shekem i Efraims bergsbygd och slog sig ner där. Senare gick han och byggde upp Penuel. 26Jerobeam tänkte för sig själv att riket nu skulle kunna komma tillbaka till Davids ättlingar 27och att, om folket fortsatte att offra i Herrens hus i Jerusalem, de skulle kunna vända tillbaka till sin herre Rehabeam, kungen av Juda. De skulle till och med kunna döda honom för att sedan vända tillbaka till Rehabeam.
28Jerobeam lät då på uppmaning av sina rådgivare tillverka två kalvar av guld och sa till folket: ”Det blir alldeles för besvärligt för er att gå upp till Jerusalem. Här är dina gudar, Israel, som ledde dig ut ur Egypten!”
29En av dessa guldkalvar ställdes i Betel och den andra i Dan. 30Dessa förledde folket att synda. Man reste till och med ända upp till Dan för att tillbe den kalv som fanns där. 31Jerobeam byggde också upp tempel på offerhöjderna och avskilde präster bland folket, även sådana som inte var leviter. 32Jerobeam instiftade en högtid på femtonde dagen i åttonde månaden i Betel, motsvarande högtiden i Juda. Jerobeam offrade själv till kalvarna som han låtit göra. Och det var där i Betel som han avskilde präster för offerplatserna som han låtit göra. 33På femtonde dagen i åttonde månaden som han själv valt, offrade han på altaret som han byggt i Betel. Så instiftade han en högtid för israeliterna och gick upp till altaret för att offra.
