1Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel. 2And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God. 3And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates, and for the joinings; and brass in abundance without weight; 4Also cedar trees in abundance: for the Zidonians and they of Tyre brought much cedar wood to David. 5And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the LORD must be exceeding magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death.
6¶ Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build an house for the LORD God of Israel. 7And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God: 8But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight. 9Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days.22.9 Solomon: that is, Peaceable 10He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever. 11Now, my son, the LORD be with thee; and prosper thou, and build the house of the LORD thy God, as he hath said of thee. 12Only the LORD give thee wisdom and understanding, and give thee charge concerning Israel, that thou mayest keep the law of the LORD thy God. 13Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed. 14Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD an hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver; and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and thou mayest add thereto.22.14 trouble: or, poverty 15Moreover there are workmen with thee in abundance, hewers and workers of stone and timber, and all manner of cunning men for every manner of work.22.15 workers…: that is, masons and carpenters 16Of the gold, the silver, and the brass, and the iron, there is no number. Arise therefore, and be doing, and the LORD be with thee.
17¶ David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying, 18Is not the LORD your God with you? and hath he not given you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the LORD, and before his people. 19Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of the LORD God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of the LORD.
Voorbereidingen voor de bouw van de tempel
1David zei: ‘Precies hier op deze plaats zal ik het huis van de Here God bouwen en een altaar plaatsen voor de brandoffers van Israël.’ 2David trok alle in Israël verblijvende vreemdelingen aan om grote vierkante steenblokken te maken voor de tempel. 3Hij zorgde ook dat een grote hoeveelheid ijzer werd bijeengebracht voor de productie van de enorme aantallen spijkers die nodig waren voor de poorten en de scharnieren, tevens zorgde hij voor zoveel koper dat het te veel was om te wegen. 4Uit Tyrus en Sidon bracht men ontelbare hoeveelheden cederhout bij David. 5‘Mijn zoon Salomo is jong en nog niet zo sterk,’ zei David, ‘en het huis van de Here moet een prachtig bouwwerk worden, beroemd en bewonderd door de hele wereld, daarom begin ik alvast met de voorbereidingen.’ En zo bracht David nog vóór zijn dood alle bouwmaterialen bijeen.
6Daarna gaf hij zijn zoon Salomo opdracht een tempel te bouwen voor de Here, de God van Israël. 7‘Ik had graag zelf een huis willen bouwen ter ere van de Here, mijn God,’ vertelde David hem, 8‘maar de Here zei dat ik dat niet moest doen. “U hebt te veel mensen gedood in grote veldslagen,” zei Hij tegen mij. “Ik heb gezien hoe u de grond rood hebt gemaakt van het bloed, daarom bent u niet geschikt om mijn huis te bouwen. 9Maar Ik zal u een zoon geven die een man van vrede zal zijn. Ik zal hem namelijk vrede geven met zijn vijanden in de omringende landen. Zijn naam zal Salomo zijn (wat ‘vredig’ betekent) en Ik zal Israël rust en vrede geven tijdens zijn bewind. 10Hij zal mijn huis bouwen en Ik zal hem behandelen als mijn eigen zoon en zijn Vader zijn. Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat zijn zonen en hun nakomelingen zullen regeren over elke generatie van Israël.” 11Daarom, mijn zoon, bid ik dat de Here met je is en Hij je voorspoed zal geven en dat je zult doen wat Hij je heeft opgedragen en het huis van de Here zult bouwen. 12En moge de Here je inzicht en wijsheid geven bij het naleven van al zijn wetten, wanneer Hij je koning van Israël maakt. 13Want als je de regels en aanwijzingen die Hij Israël door Mozes gaf, zorgvuldig naleeft, zul je voorspoed hebben. Wees sterk en moedig, onbevreesd en enthousiast. 14Door hard werken heb ik zoʼn drieduizend ton goud en dertigduizend ton zilver bijeengebracht en zoveel ijzer en koper dat ik het niet eens meer kan wegen. Tevens heb ik gezorgd voor hout en steen voor de muren. Het is jouw taak dat nog aan te vullen. 15Je hebt veel ervaren metselaars, timmerlui en andere bekwame handwerkslieden tot je beschikking. 16Er is dus meer dan voldoende goud, zilver, koper en ijzer. Ga daarom aan het werk en de Here zal met je zijn.’
17Daarna gaf David alle leiders van Israël opdracht zijn zoon Salomo bij deze enorme onderneming te helpen. 18‘De Here, uw God, is zeer goed voor u,’ verklaarde hij. ‘Hij heeft u vrede gegeven met de omringende landen die ik heb veroverd voor de Here en zijn volk. 19Doe daarom uw uiterste best de Here, uw God, in alles te gehoorzamen en begin met de bouw van de tempel van de Here. Dan kunt u binnenkort de ark en de andere heilige voorwerpen daarin onderbrengen.’
