ダビデの人口調査
1時にサタンが、ダビデに人口調査をさせるように仕向けて、イスラエルに災いをもたらしました。
2王は、ヨアブをはじめ指導者たちに命じました。「国中の人口を完全に調べ上げ、その人数を報告してほしい。」
3すると、ヨアブが反対意見を述べました。「主が民を百倍に増してくださっても、みなあなたの民ではありませんか。それなのになぜ、そんな要求をなさるのですか。なぜ、イスラエルに罪を犯させるようなことをなさるのですか。」
4しかし、王が説き伏せたので、ヨアブは命令どおりイスラエル中を巡り歩き、エルサレムに帰って来ました。 5ヨアブが報告した総人口は、全イスラエルで戦いに出られる者が百十万人、ユダで四十七万人でした。 6ただし、ヨアブは王の命令に心を痛めていたので、数の中にレビとベニヤミンの二部族を入れませんでした。
7この人口調査は神の御心を損なったので、神はイスラエルを罰しました。
8ダビデは神に言いました。「私は罪を犯しました。どうかお赦しください。自分のしたことがどんなに間違っていたか、今わかりました。」
9そこで主は、王の相談役である預言者ガドに語りました。 10-11「ダビデに次のように伝えよ。『主は、三つのうち一つを選べと言われる。 12三年間のききんか、三か月の間敵に苦しめられることか、それとも、御使いが国中を荒らし、三日間恐ろしい疫病に悩まされることかだ。よく考えて、私を遣わされたお方に何と答えるか決めるように。』」
ガドはダビデのもとに行き、そのとおり伝えました。
13王は答えました。「一つを選ぶのはつらいことです。どうか、私を人の手にではなく、主の御手に陥らせてください。主のあわれみは深いからです。」
14すると、神はイスラエルに疫病を下したので、七万人が死にました。 15病気が猛威をふるっている時、主は一人の御使いを送って、エルサレムを滅ぼそうとしました。しかし、主はあわれに思って考えを変え、御使いに、「もう十分だ。手を引きなさい」と命じたのです。御使いはその時、エブス人オルナンの打穀場に立っていました。 16王は、御使いが抜き身の剣をエルサレムの方に差し伸べ、天と地の間に立っているのを見ました。そこで、その場に居合わせたイスラエルの長老たちとともに荒布をまとい、地にひれ伏しました。
17ダビデは神に願いました。「人口調査の命令を出して罪を犯したのは、この私です。民が何をしたというのでしょう。主よ、私と私の家族を滅ぼしても、民は滅ぼさないでください。」
18すると、御使いはガドに、「王がエブス人オルナンの打穀場に祭壇を築くように」と指示しました。 19-20王はさっそく、小麦の打穀をしていたオルナンに会いに行きました。オルナンが振り向くと、御使いの姿が見えたので、彼の四人の子は走って隠れました。 21オルナンは王が来るのも見て、打穀場から出て来てひれ伏しました。
22ダビデはオルナンに言いました。「それ相応の金を払うから、この打穀場を譲ってくれないか。ここに主のための祭壇を築きたいのだ。そうすれば、伝染病も収まるだろうから。」
23「王よ、どうぞお気に召すままにお使いください。よろしければ、焼き尽くすいけにえ用の牛も差し上げます。打穀の器具を、たきぎ代わりに使っていただいてけっこうです。穀物のささげ物がお入り用でしたら、小麦がございます。何でもご用立ていたします。」
24「いや、十分な金額で買い取らせてほしい。おまえのものを取って、それを主にささげるわけにはいかない。ふところを痛めずに、いけにえをささげることはしたくないのだ。」
25そして、ダビデはオルナンに六百シェケル（約七キログラム）の金を与えました。 26こうして手に入れた場所に主のための祭壇を築き、その上で、焼き尽くすいけにえと和解のいけにえをささげました。ダビデが大声で主を呼ぶと、主は彼に答え、天から下った火がいけにえを焼き尽くしました。 27それから、主は御使いに命じて、剣をさやに納めさせました。 28ダビデは願いが聞かれたのを見て、もう一度いけにえをささげました。 29当時、モーセが荒野で造った幕屋と祭壇は、ギブオンの高台にありました。 30しかしダビデは、神を求めてそこまで行くことができませんでした。抜き身の剣を持つ御使いを恐れたからです。
1And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. 2And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it. 3And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel? 4Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
5¶ And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword. 6But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.
7And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.21.7 And…: Heb. And it was evil in the eyes of the LORD concerning this thing 8And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.
9¶ And the LORD spake unto Gad, David’s seer, saying, 10Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.21.10 offer: Heb. stretch out 11So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee21.11 Choose…: Heb. Take to thee 12Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me. 13And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.21.13 very great: or, very many
14¶ So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men. 15And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.21.15 Ornan: also called, Araunah 16And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces. 17And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
18¶ Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite. 19And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD. 20And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.21.20 And Ornan…: or, When Ornan turned back and saw the angel, then he and his four sons with him hid themselves 21And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground. 22Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.21.22 Grant: Heb. Give 23And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all. 24And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost. 25So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight. 26And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering. 27And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.
28¶ At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there. 29For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon. 30But David could not go before it to enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
