サウルの死
1ペリシテ人はイスラエル軍を攻め破ったので、イスラエル軍は敗走し、ギルボア山のふもとで虐殺されました。 2ペリシテ人は、サウルと三人の息子ヨナタン、アビナダブ、マルキ・シュアを捕らえ、彼ら全員を討ち取りました。 3サウルは、ペリシテ人の射手たちに囲まれてねらい撃ちされ、深手を負ったため、 4苦しい息の下から、そばにいたよろい持ちに命じました。「さあ、おまえの剣で私を殺してくれ。あの割礼も受けていない者どもに捕まって、なぶり者にされたくないのだ。」
しかし、よろい持ちは恐ろしくて手が出せません。そこでサウルは剣を取り、その上にうつぶせに倒れて自害したのです。 5よろい持ちは王の死を見届けると、自分も同じように自害しました。 6こうして、サウルと三人の息子はみな討ち死にし、彼の全家は一日のうちに滅び去ってしまったのです。
7谷にいたイスラエル軍は、味方が総くずれとなり、王と王子たちが戦死したと聞くと、町を捨てて逃げ出しました。以来、ペリシテ人がその町々に住むようになりました。 8翌日、ペリシテ人が兵士の死体からめぼしい物をはぎ取り、あたりに散らばっている戦利品を集めようと引き返して来た時、サウルと息子たちのなきがらを見つけました。 9それで彼らはサウルの武具をはぎ取り、彼の首をはねました。そして、その首を自分たちの国へ持ち帰って見せ物とし、偶像の前で勝利を祝いました。 10武具は彼らの神々の神殿に奉納し、首はダゴンの宮にさらしたのです。
11ヤベシュ・ギルアデの人々は、ペリシテ人がサウルの首をさらしたことを聞きました。 12彼らのうちの勇士は、行って王と三人の王子のなきがらを取り返し、ヤベシュにある樫の木の下に葬り、七日の間、断食して喪に服しました。
13サウルは、主に不従順であったために死んだのです。彼は霊媒に伺いを立て、 14主の導きを求めようとはしませんでした。それで、主は彼を殺し、王位をエッサイの子ダビデに渡されたのでした。

So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.10.4 abuse me: or, mock me 5And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died. 6So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together. 7And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8¶ And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa. 9And when they had stripped him, they took his head, and his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry tidings unto their idols, and to the people. 10And they put his armour in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.
11¶ And when all Jabesh-gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, 12They arose, all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
13¶ So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;10.13 committed: Heb. transgressed 14And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.10.14 Jesse: Heb.
