ギデオン
1やがてイスラエルの民は、またもや他の神々を拝み始めました。それで主は、敵を起こしてイスラエルを懲らしめたので、彼らはミデヤン人に七年間苦しめられることになりました。 2ミデヤン人はとても残忍だったので、イスラエル人は山に難を避けて、洞窟やほら穴に身を隠しました。 3-4また、イスラエル人が種をまくと、ミデヤン人やアマレク人をはじめ、近隣の国から略奪者が来て農作物を荒らしたり、ガザに至るまで各地を荒らし回り、食糧を全部奪い取ったのです。羊、牛、ろばも奪って行きました。 5彼らはおびただしい数のらくだの群れを連れて来て、その地を荒らし尽くすまで動きませんでした。 6そのためイスラエルは、ミデヤン人のために衰え果ててしまいました。
7ついに、たまりかねた人々は、主に助けを求めて叫びました。 8主は一人の預言者を遣わして応えました。「イスラエルの神、主は、あなたがたをエジプトでの奴隷生活から救い出してくださった。 9また、エジプト人やあなたがたを苦しめる者たちの手から助け出し、敵を一掃して、この地を与えてくださったのだ。 10その神様が、『わたしは、あなたがたの神である主だ。あなたがたの回りを取り囲むエモリ人の神々を拝んではならない』とお命じになったではないか。それなのに、あなたがたは聞き従わなかった。」
11ある日、主の使いが現れ、アビエゼル人ヨアシュの農地内にあるオフラの樫の木の下に座っていました。ヨアシュの子ギデオンは、酒ぶね〔ぶどうを絞ってぶどう酒を作るために、岩に掘られた箱形の穴〕の中で小麦を打っていました。ミデヤン人から身を隠していたのです。 12主の使いはギデオンの前に立ち、「勇士よ、主はあなたとともにおられる」と告げました。
13ギデオンは答えました。「初めてお目にかかりますが、どうか教えてくれませんか。主が共におられるのなら、なぜ、こんなことが次から次へと起こるのですか。先祖から聞かされました。主がエジプトから導き出してくださった時には、驚くべきみわざがたくさん行われたと。なのに、今はどうです。そんなみわざのかけらもないではありませんか。もう主は私たちを見捨てて、ミデヤン人にしたい放題をさせ、踏みつけられるに任せておられるのです。」
14すると主は、ギデオンに向かって言いました。「わたしがあなたを強くする。行きなさい。イスラエルをミデヤン人から救い出すのだ。わたしがあなたを遣わす。」
15ギデオンは答えました。「主よ、とんでもありません。私がイスラエルを救うことなど、できるわけありません。私の家はマナセ族の中で最も弱く、それに私は家で一番年下なのです。」
16主は彼に言います。「神であるわたしがついているのだ。だからあなたは、たちどころにミデヤンの大軍を打ち破ることができる。」
17「もしそれがほんとうなら、その証拠にしるしを見せてください。今、語りかけてくださっているあなたが主であることを見せてほしいのです。 18でも、少し待っていてくださいませんか。あなたに贈り物を差し上げたいのです。」
「わかった。あなたが戻るまで待っていよう。」
19ギデオンは大急ぎで家に駆け込んで子やぎを一匹焼き、一エパ（約二十二リットル）の粉で種を入れないパンをこしらえました。次いで肉をかごに詰め、スープをなべに入れて、樫の木の下にいる御使いのところに持って来て差し出しました。 20すると、御使いはギデオンに言いました。「肉とパンをあそこの岩の上に置いて、スープをかけてみなさい。」ギデオンが言われたとおりにすると、 21御使いは手にしていた杖で肉とパンにさわりました。すると、たちまち岩から火が燃え上がり、肉とパンを焼き尽くしてしまったのです。その瞬間、御使いの姿は見えなくなりました。
22ギデオンは、ほんとうにそれが主の使いであったと知って、思わず叫びました。「ああ、主なる神様！ 私は面と向かって主の使いを見てしまいました。」 23すると、主の声がありました。「大丈夫だ、心配しなくていい。あなたは死にはしない。」 24ギデオンはそこに祭壇を築き、「主との平和の祭壇」と名づけました。この祭壇は、今もアビエゼル人の地オフラにあります。
25その夜、主はギデオンに、父親の一番上等の雄牛を、父親の持っているバアルの祭壇のところへ引いて行き、祭壇を引き倒し、そばにある女神アシェラの木像を切り倒すように命じました。 26「さあ、わたしのために、高い所に石を積んで祭壇を築き直しなさい。次に、さっきの雄牛を焼き尽くすいけにえとして祭壇にささげ、壊した木像をくべて火をたきなさい。」 27そこでギデオンは、十人の使用人を駆り出して、命じられたとおりにしました。ただ、家族や町の人々の目をはばかって、夜中にそれを行いました。もし見つかれば、どんな目に会うかわかっていたからです。
28翌朝早く、町がにぎわい始めるころ、人々は、バアルの祭壇が取り払われ、そばのアシェラの偶像も壊されて、代わりに新しく築かれた祭壇の上に雄牛のいけにえがささげられているのを見つけました。
29「いったい、どこのだれがやったのだ。」人々は調べ回り、ついにヨアシュの子ギデオンのしわざであることを突き止めました。 30人々はヨアシュに怒りをぶつけました。「息子を出せ！ あんなやつは殺してやる！ よくもバアル様の祭壇をめちゃめちゃにして、おまけにアシェラ様の像まで壊してくれたな。」
31しかしヨアシュは、たけり狂う人々を前にして言い返しました。「バアル様は、おまえたちに助けてもらわなきゃならないのか。なんとだらしない神様なのだ。おまえたちはこんな情けないバアル様のために、いのちを投げ出そうというのか。もしほんとうの神様なら、ご自分の祭壇を壊した者など、さっさとやっつけておしまいになればいいのだ。」
32この時からギデオンは、「エルバアル」とあだ名されるようになりました。「バアルは自分の面倒ぐらい見るがよい」という意味です。
33それからしばらくして、ミデヤン人、アマレク人、その他の近隣諸国が連合してイスラエルに対抗しようと兵を挙げ、その軍勢はヨルダン川を渡り、イズレエルの谷に陣を敷きました。 34すると、主の霊がギデオンをとらえたので、ギデオンが召集ラッパを吹き鳴らすと、アビエゼルの男たちが結集しました。 35マナセ、アシェル、ゼブルン、ナフタリにも使者を送り、戦士を募ると、みな応じました。
36ギデオンは神に願い出ました。「お約束どおり、イスラエルを救うために私を立ててくださるおつもりなら、 37今夜、打ち場に羊の毛を置いておきますから、明日の朝、羊の毛だけが露でしめり、土が乾いているようにしてください。そうすれば、あなたがついていてくださるのだと確信できます。」 38すると翌朝、そのとおりのことが起こりました。ギデオンが早く起きて羊の毛をしぼると、鉢いっぱいの水がしたたり落ちたのです。
39ギデオンはまた主に願いました。「どうか、お怒りにならないでください。もう一度だけ試させていただきたいのです。今度は反対に、羊の毛だけを乾かして、地面全体をしめらせてください。」 40主はギデオンの願いどおりにされました。その夜、羊の毛は乾いたままで、地面は露で覆われていたのです。
Gideon
1The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites. 2Because the power of Midian was so oppressive, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves and strongholds. 3Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples invaded the country. 4They camped on the land and ruined the crops all the way to Gaza and did not spare a living thing for Israel, neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys. 5They came up with their livestock and their tents like swarms of locusts. It was impossible to count them or their camels; they invaded the land to ravage it. 6Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the Lord for help.
7When the Israelites cried out to the Lord because of Midian, 8he sent them a prophet, who said, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 9I rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians. And I delivered you from the hand of all your oppressors; I drove them out before you and gave you their land. 10I said to you, “I am the Lord your God; do not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live.” But you have not listened to me.’
11The angel of the Lord came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. 12When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, ‘The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.’
13‘Pardon me, my lord,’ Gideon replied, ‘but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, “Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?” But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.’
14The Lord turned to him and said, ‘Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?’
15‘Pardon me, my lord,’ Gideon replied, ‘but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.’
16The Lord answered, ‘I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive.’
17Gideon replied, ‘If now I have found favour in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me. 18Please do not go away until I come back and bring my offering and set it before you.’
And the Lord said, ‘I will wait until you return.’
19Gideon went inside, prepared a young goat, and from an ephah6:19 That is, probably about 16 kilograms of flour he made bread without yeast. Putting the meat in a basket and its broth in a pot, he brought them out and offered them to him under the oak.
20The angel of God said to him, ‘Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock, and pour out the broth.’ And Gideon did so. 21Then the angel of the Lord touched the meat and the unleavened bread with the tip of the staff that was in his hand. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the Lord disappeared. 22When Gideon realised that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, ‘Alas, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!’
23But the Lord said to him, ‘Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.’
24So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord Is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
25That same night the Lord said to him, ‘Take the second bull from your father’s herd, the one seven years old.6:25 Or Take a full-grown, mature bull from your father’s herd Tear down your father’s altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole6:25 That is, a wooden symbol of the goddess Asherah; also in verses 26, 28 and 30 beside it. 26Then build a proper kind of6:26 Or build with layers of stone an altar to the Lord your God on the top of this height. Using the wood of the Asherah pole that you cut down, offer the second6:26 Or full-grown; also in verse 28 bull as a burnt offering.’
27So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the Lord told him. But because he was afraid of his family and the townspeople, he did it at night rather than in the daytime.
28In the morning when the people of the town got up, there was Baal’s altar, demolished, with the Asherah pole beside it cut down and the second bull sacrificed on the newly-built altar!
29They asked each other, ‘Who did this?’
When they carefully investigated, they were told, ‘Gideon son of Joash did it.’
30The people of the town demanded of Joash, ‘Bring out your son. He must die, because he has broken down Baal’s altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.’
31But Joash replied to the hostile crowd around him, ‘Are you going to plead Baal’s cause? Are you trying to save him? Whoever fights for him shall be put to death by morning! If Baal really is a god, he can defend himself when someone breaks down his altar.’ 32So because Gideon broke down Baal’s altar, they gave him the name Jerub-Baal6:32 Jerub-Baal probably means let Baal contend. that day, saying, ‘Let Baal contend with him.’
33Now all the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples joined forces and crossed over the Jordan and camped in the Valley of Jezreel. 34Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, summoning the Abiezrites to follow him. 35He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, calling them to arms, and also into Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, so that they too went up to meet them.
36Gideon said to God, ‘If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised – 37look, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing-floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said.’ 38And that is what happened. Gideon rose early the next day; he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew – a bowlful of water.
39Then Gideon said to God, ‘Do not be angry with me. Let me make just one more request. Allow me one more test with the fleece, but this time make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with dew.’ 40That night God did so. Only the fleece was dry; all the ground was covered with dew.
