ポティファルに仕えるヨセフ
1さて、イシュマエル人の隊商に売り飛ばされたヨセフに話を戻しましょう。彼はエジプトに着くと、エジプト王ファラオに仕える役人の一人、ポティファルに買い取られました。 2ヨセフはこの主人となった人の家の仕事をさせられましたが、いつも主が助けてくださるので、何をしてもうまくいきました。 3ポティファルの目に、主がヨセフに特別よくしておられることは明らかでした。 4ヨセフは主人の気に入り、家の管理と業務のすべてを任されるようになったのです。 5すると、ポティファルの家は祝福され、万事がスムーズに運びました。収穫も、羊の群れも増える一方でした。 6喜んだポティファルは、全財産の管理をヨセフに任せることにしました。ヨセフさえいれば、何の心配もありません。しかも、ヨセフはたいへん美青年でした。
7そこで、困ったことが持ち上がりました。事もあろうに、ポティファルの妻がヨセフに目をつけて、彼を誘惑するようになったのです。 8ヨセフはそれを拒みました。「ご主人は家のこといっさいを私にお任せになりました。 9家では、私のすることに、決して口出ししたり、指図したりなさいません。あなた以外は何でも私の自由にさせてくださいます。これほどまでにしていただいて、どうして、そんな大それたことができましょう。ご主人ばかりか、神様にまで背くことなどできません。」
10それでも彼女はあきらめません。毎日しつこく言い寄り、ヨセフが相手にしないと何とかして気を引こうとやっきになりました。
11そんなある日のこと、ヨセフは家で仕事をしていました。たまたま周囲にはだれもいません。この時とばかり彼女がやって来て、ヨセフの袖をつかみました。 12-13「ちょっと私の部屋に来ておくれ。」とんでもないと、ヨセフがその手を振り払って逃げようとしたところ、上着が脱げてしまいました。しかし彼はそのまま家の外へ逃げ出しました。彼女はそのうしろ姿を、残された上着を手にしたままじっと見つめていましたが、 14-15突然叫び声を上げました。何事が起こったのかと、男たちが駆けつけると、彼女が興奮して泣いています。「私の主人が、あんなヘブル人（イスラエル人）の奴隷なんか連れて来るからいけないのよ。おかげで危ない目に会うところだったわ。とてもひどいことをしようとしたので、私、大声で叫んでやったわ。そうしたら、上着を置いたままあわてて逃げ出したのよ。」
16彼女はヨセフの上着を手もとに置き、その夜、夫が家に帰ると、 17昼間の出来事を話しました。「うちで仕事をさせている、あのヘブル人の奴隷ですが、今日私にひどいことをしようとしたのです。 18大声を上げたから助かったものの、そうでなければ、どうなっていたかわかりませんわ。あの男ったら、あわてて上着を残したまま逃げ出して……。これがその上着です。」
19主人がかんかんに怒ったのは、言うまでもありません。 20真相をよく調べもせず、すぐさまヨセフを捕らえ、王の囚人が入れられる監獄に放り込みました。 21しかし、主は監獄の中でさえヨセフとともにいて、何事にも心にかけてくださったので、ヨセフは看守長にとても気に入られました。 22この男なら大丈夫と見抜いた看守長は、やがてすべての囚人の面倒を見るよう、監獄内の管理をいっさいヨセフに任せることにしました。 23それからというもの、ヨセフが取り仕切ったので、看守長は何の心配もなくなりました。主がヨセフとともにおられるので、彼は何をしてもスムーズに事が運びました。
Joseph and Potiphar’s wife
1Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.
2The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, 4Joseph found favour in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 5From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. 6So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, ‘Come to bed with me!’
8But he refused. ‘With me in charge,’ he told her, ‘my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. 9No-one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?’ 10And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even to be with her.
11One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. 12She caught him by his cloak and said, ‘Come to bed with me!’ But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.
13When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14she called her household servants. ‘Look,’ she said to them, ‘this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed. 15When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.’
16She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17Then she told him this story: ‘That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me. 18But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.’
19When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, ‘This is how your slave treated me,’ he burned with anger. 20Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.
But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favour in the eyes of the prison warder. 22So the warder put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. 23The warder paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
