1さて、アブラハムは南のネゲブ地方へ移り、カデシュとシュルの間に住みました。そして彼がゲラルの町にいた時、 2妻サラを妹だと言ったので、アビメレク王は彼女を王宮に召し入れました。 3ところがその夜、神が夢で王に現れました。「あなたは夫のある女を召し入れた。そのために死ななければならない。」
4しかしアビメレクは、まだ彼女に近づいてはいませんでした。「とんでもないことです、主よ。 5自分の妹だと言ったのは、あの男のほうです。それに彼女自身も、『ええ、彼は兄です』と言ったのです。私には、やましさなど全くありません。」
6「それはよくわかっている。だから、あなたが罪を犯さないようにしたのだ。彼女に指一本ふれさせないように、わたしが仕向けたのだ。 7さあ、彼女を夫のもとに返しなさい。彼は預言者だから、あなたのために祈ってくれるだろう。そうすればあなたは助かる。だが、彼女を返さなければ、あなたもあなたの一族も、いのちはない。」
8翌朝、王は早く起き、宮殿で働く者を全員を集めました。王からこれらのことを聞いた者たちはみな、恐ろしさに震え上がりました。 9-10このあと、王はアブラハムを呼び寄せました。「いったいなんということをしてくれたのか。もう少しで、私も国も、たいへんな罪を犯すところだった。こんな仕打ちを受ける覚えはさらさらない。私があなたに何をしたというのか。どうして、こんなひどいことを考えついたのだ。」
11-12アブラハムは答えました。「実を言うと、この町は神を恐れない町だと思ったのです。ですから、きっと私を殺して妻を奪うだろうと思いました。それに、彼女が妹だというのはうそではありません。腹違いの妹で、私の妻となったのです。 13そんなわけで、神の命令で故郷を発つ時、妻には、『これからどこへ行っても、おまえは私の妹だということにしてほしい』と頼んでおいたのです。」
14アビメレク王は、羊と牛と男女の奴隷をアブラハムに与え、妻のサラを返しました。
15王は、「さあ、私の領地を見てごらんなさい。どこが気に入りましたか。どこでも好きな所に住んでかまいません」とアブラハムに言うと、 16サラのほうを向いて続けました。「あなたの『お兄さん』に、弁償金として銀貨一千枚を差し上げることにしよう。それで万事収めてもらえないだろうか。これで、間違いはなかったと認められるだろう。」
17アブラハムは神に、王と王妃をはじめ、一族のすべての女性の病が治るようにと祈ったので、彼女たちはまた子どもを産むようになりました。 18というのは、アビメレクがアブラハムの妻を召し入れた罰で、みな子どもができないようにされていたのです。
1And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar. 2And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.
3But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife.20.3 a man’s…: Heb. married to an husband 4But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation? 5Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.20.5 integrity: or, simplicity, or, sincerity 6And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her. 7Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.
8Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid. 9Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done. 10And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing? 11And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake. 12And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. 13And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.
14And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife. 15And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.20.15 where…: Heb. as is good in thine eyes 16And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.
17¶ So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. 18For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham’s wife.
