アブラムの召命
1父テラが死んだ時、主はアブラムに命じました。「あなたは、ここを発ちなさい。あなたの親族も住み慣れた地も捨てて出かけるのです。行く先はわたしが教えるから、ただ示されたとおりに進みなさい。 2そうすれば、あなたを偉大な国民の父にしよう。あなたを祝福し、その名を広めて、だれ一人知らぬ者がないようにしよう。あなたによって、ほかの多くの者も祝福されます。 3わたしは、あなたを祝福する者を祝福し、あなたをのろう者をのろう。アブラムによって、全世界が祝福されるのです。」
4アブラムは主のことばに従って出発しました。ロトも彼といっしょです。その時、アブラムは七十五歳でした。 5彼は妻のサライと甥のロトのほか、ハランで得た家畜や奴隷などを連れて旅をし、カナンに着きました。 6そのまま旅を続け、シェケムの近くまで来ると、モレの樫の木のそばで野営することにしました。当時、この地方にはカナン人が住んでいました。
7その時、主がアブラムに現れ、「この地をあなたの子孫に与えよう」と約束されました。アブラムは喜んで、主とお会いした記念に、そこに祭壇を築きました。 8彼はそれからさらに南へ向かい、西のベテルと東のアイにはさまれた丘陵地帯に来ました。アブラムは野営をし、主のために祭壇を築いて祈りました。 9そのあとはまた、時々休みながらゆっくりと南のネゲブへ向けて旅を続けました。
エジプト滞在
10ちょうどそのころ、この地方一帯がひどいききんに見舞われたので、何とかしなければならなくなったアブラムは、ひとまずエジプトに避難することにしました。
11-13エジプトの国境に近づくと、彼は妻のサライに、人に聞かれたら私の妹だと言ってほしいと頼みました。「あなたは美しいから、きっとエジプト人の目を引くだろう。『たいそう美しい女だが、夫がじゃまだ。夫を殺して彼女を奪おう』と考えるかもしれない。だが、妹ということにしておけば、あなたの手前、私を大事にしてくれるだろう。それで、無事に生き延びることができるかもしれない。」 14エジプトに着くと、案の定サライの美しさは評判となり、 15ファラオに仕える役人までが王の前で彼女のことをほめそやしたので、王はサライを宮殿に召し入れました。 16おかげでアブラムは、王から羊、牛、ろば、男女の奴隷、らくだなど、たくさんの贈り物をもらいました。
17しかし、事はそれで終わらず、王がサライを召し入れたことで、主は宮殿に恐ろしい疫病をはやらせたのです。 18王はアブラムを呼び出し、激しく非難しました。「いったい、なんということをしてくれたのだ。サライがおまえの妻だということを、どうして隠していたのか。 19妹だなどとうそをついて、彼女が私のものになるのを平気で見ていたとは。さあ、あの女を連れて、この国から出て行ってくれ。」 20王は兵士にアブラムと妻をその縁者や財産とともに護送させ、エジプトから追放しました。
1Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
4So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. 5And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.
6¶ And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.12.6 plain: Heb. plains 7And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him. 8And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Beth-el, and pitched his tent, having Beth-el on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD. 9And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.12.9 going…: Heb. in going and journeying
10¶ And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land. 11And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon: 12Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. 13Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.
14¶ And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair. 15The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. 16And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels. 17And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram’s wife. 18And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife? 19Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way. 20And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.
