ユダの王アハズ
1ユダの新しい王、ヨタムの子アハズは、イスラエルの王ペカの第十七年に、二十歳で即位し、エルサレムで十六年間治めました。
2アハズは、先祖ダビデのようには、主の前に正しくありませんでした。 3それどころか、彼はイスラエルの歴代の王のように偶像礼拝を行い、イスラエルの民がこの地に入った時に主が滅ぼされた国々の異教の風習にならい、焼き尽くすいけにえとしてわが子を神々にささげることまでしました。 4このほかにも、高台の礼拝所や繁った木の下の祭壇でいけにえをささげたり、香をたいたりしました。
5そのころ、シリヤ（アラム）の王レツィンとイスラエルの王ペカの連合軍がユダに宣戦布告し、エルサレムを包囲しましたが、町を占領することはできませんでした。 6それでも、レツィン王はエラテの町を取り戻し、ユダの人々を追い出して、シリヤ人を移住させました。今もそのままです。
7アハズ王はアッシリヤの王ティグラテ・ピレセルに使者を送り、援軍を要請しました。 8このため、神殿や宮殿の宝物倉にあった金銀を贈り物として差し出したので、 9アッシリヤの王はシリヤの首都ダマスコを攻撃し、住民を捕虜としてキルに連れ去り、レツィン王を殺しました。
10アハズ王は、ティグラテ・ピレセル王に会うためダマスコへ行き、そこで、異教の神殿にある見慣れない祭壇に目を留めました。さっそくその寸法を書き留めて図面を作り、くわしい説明書きとともに、それを祭司ウリヤに送りました。 11-12ウリヤは指示されたとおりに祭壇を築き、王のために準備しました。王は、ダマスコから帰るとすぐに、いけにえをささげました。 13祭壇の上に、焼き尽くすいけにえと穀物の供え物とをささげ、さらに注ぎのささげ物を注いでから、和解のいけにえの血を振りかけました。 14それから、これまで神殿の入口にあった青銅の祭壇を、神殿の正面から新しい祭壇の北側に移し替えました。 15王は祭司ウリヤに、新しい祭壇の上で、朝ごとにささげる焼き尽くすいけにえと夕べの穀物の供え物、王の焼き尽くすいけにえと穀物の供え物、民のささげ物、および、これらに添える注ぎのささげ物をささげるように命じました。焼き尽くすいけにえや他のいけにえの血も、新しい祭壇に振りかけられました。王が、「古い青銅の祭壇は、私が個人的に伺いを立てるために使おう」と言ったので、古い祭壇はもっぱら占い用に使うことになりました。
16祭司ウリヤは、王の命令どおりにしました。
17それから王は、神殿にあった車輪つきの台を解体し、横木とその上に載せてあった洗盤を取りはずしました。また、青銅の牛の背に載せてあった大洗盤を下ろして、敷石の上に置きました。 18さらに、アッシリヤ王に敬意を表して、宮殿と神殿との間にしつらえた祝祭用の通路を取りはずしました。
19アハズ王のその他の業績は、『ユダ諸王の年代記』に記録されています。 20王は死んで、エルサレムの旧市街、ダビデの町の王室墓地に葬られ、その子ヒゼキヤが王となりました。
Ahaz king of Judah
1In the seventeenth year of Pekah son of Remaliah, Ahaz son of Jotham king of Judah began to reign. 2Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for sixteen years. Unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord his God. 3He followed the ways of the kings of Israel and even sacrificed his son in the fire, engaging in the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. 4He offered sacrifices and burned incense at the high places, on the hilltops and under every spreading tree.
5Then Rezin king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem and besieged Ahaz, but they could not overpower him. 6At that time, Rezin king of Aram recovered Elath for Aram by driving out the people of Judah. Edomites then moved into Elath and have lived there to this day.
7Ahaz sent messengers to say to Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria, ‘I am your servant and vassal. Come up and save me out of the hand of the king of Aram and of the king of Israel, who are attacking me.’ 8And Ahaz took the silver and gold found in the temple of the Lord and in the treasuries of the royal palace and sent it as a gift to the king of Assyria. 9The king of Assyria complied by attacking Damascus and capturing it. He deported its inhabitants to Kir and put Rezin to death.
10Then King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria. He saw an altar in Damascus and sent to Uriah the priest a sketch of the altar, with detailed plans for its construction. 11So Uriah the priest built an altar in accordance with all the plans that King Ahaz had sent from Damascus and finished it before King Ahaz returned. 12When the king came back from Damascus and saw the altar, he approached it and presented offerings16:12 Or and went up on it. 13He offered up his burnt offering and grain offering, poured out his drink offering, and splashed the blood of his fellowship offerings against the altar. 14The bronze altar that stood before the Lord he brought from the front of the temple – from between the new altar and the temple of the Lord – and put it on the north side of the new altar.
15King Ahaz then gave these orders to Uriah the priest: ‘On the large new altar, offer the morning burnt offering and the evening grain offering, the king’s burnt offering and his grain offering, and the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their grain offering and their drink offering. Splash against this altar the blood of all the burnt offerings and sacrifices. But I will use the bronze altar for seeking guidance.’ 16And Uriah the priest did just as King Ahaz had ordered.
17King Ahaz cut off the side panels and removed the basins from the movable stands. He removed the Sea from the bronze bulls that supported it and set it on a stone base. 18He took away the Sabbath canopy16:18 Or the dais of his throne (see Septuagint) that had been built at the temple and removed the royal entrance outside the temple of the Lord, in deference to the king of Assyria.
19As for the other events of the reign of Ahaz, and what he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 20Ahaz rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Hezekiah his son succeeded him as king.
