ナボテのぶどう畑
1イズレエル出身のナボテは、町はずれのアハブ王の宮殿の近くに、ぶどう畑を持っていました。 2ある日、王はナボテに、畑を譲ってほしいと申し出ました。「あそこを庭にしたい。宮殿に近いから、とても便利なのだ。」王は、銀で買い取ってもよいし、もしナボテが望むなら、もっと良い地を代わりに与えてもよいと言いました。 3ところがナボテは、「どんなことがあっても、お譲りするわけにはまいりません。あそこは先祖伝来の土地なのです」と答えました。 4王は不きげんになり、怒りながら宮殿に戻り、食事もせず、壁の方を向いたままベッドに横になっていました。
5妻のイゼベルが入って来て、アハブに尋ねました。「いったい、どうなさったのですか。お食事もなさらないとは。そんなにふさぎ込むほど、腹にすえかねることでもあったのですか。」そこで、アハブは答えました。 6「ナボテに、『ぶどう畑を売ってくれ、何ならほかの土地と交換してもいい』と頼んだのだが、あっさり断られてしまったのだ。」イゼベルは言いました。 7「まあ、あなたはイスラエルの王ではありませんか。さあ起きて、お食事をなさってください。そんなことで心配なさるには及びません。私がナボテのぶどう畑を手に入れてみせますから。」
8イゼベルは王の名で手紙を書き、王の印を押して、ナボテが住むイズレエルの町の長老に送りました。 9手紙には、こう書いてありました。「町の者に断食と祈りを命じなさい。それからナボテを呼び、 10二人のならず者に、『ナボテは神と王とをのろった』と証言させるのです。そのうえで、ナボテを外に引き出して石打ちにしなさい。」
11そこで、町の長老たちは王妃の指図どおりに動きました。 12町の住民を呼び出し、ナボテを裁判にかけたのです。 13そこへ、良心のかけらもない二人のならず者が来て、ナボテが神と王とをのろったと証言しました。こうして、ナボテは町の外に引き出され、石を投げつけられて殺されてしまったのです。 14ナボテが死んだことは、すぐ王妃に報告されました。
15イゼベルは知らせを聞くと、王に言いました。「ナボテが売るのをしぶっていたぶどう畑のことを、覚えていらっしゃいますね。さあ今、それを手に入れることができますよ。ナボテが死んだのです！」 16王は、ぶどう畑を自分のものにするために出かけました。
17その時、主はエリヤに言われました。 18「アハブ王に会いにサマリヤへ行きなさい。今、王はナボテのぶどう畑を自分のものにしようと、近くまで来ている。 19彼にわたしのことばを伝えなさい。『ナボテを殺しただけではまだ足りず、彼の畑まで奪い取ろうというのか。そんな大それたことをしたので、ナボテのときと同じように、町の外で犬があなたの血をなめるようになる。』」
20アハブに会いに来たエリヤを見て、王は、「また悪い敵に見つかってしまった」と言いました。エリヤは答えました。「王が悪魔に身を売り渡したので、主ののろいを下すために出て来たのだ。 21主は王に大きな災いを下し、一族を一掃しようとしておられる。王の子孫である男子は、一人も生き残れない。 22ヤロブアム王家やバシャ王家のように滅ぼされるからだ。王が主の激しい怒りを買い、イスラエルに罪を犯させた報いだ。 23主はまた、イゼベル王妃についても、『イズレエルの犬がイゼベルの死体を引き裂く』と言われた。 24王の家の者たちのうち、町の中で死ぬ者は犬に食われ、野で死ぬ者ははげたかの餌食になる。」
25アハブのように悪魔の言いなりになった者は、ほかに一人もいませんでした。妻のイゼベルが王をそそのかして、あらゆる悪事に走らせたからです。 26王が犯した最大の罪は、主がこの地から追い出したエモリ人にならって、多くの偶像を礼拝したことです。
27王はエリヤのことばを聞くと、上着を引き裂き、ぼろをまとい、断食をし、荒布の上に伏して、打ちひしがれていました。 28その時、エリヤはまた主から別のことばを聞きました。 29「アハブがわたしの前にへりくだっているのを見たか。あんなにまでしているので、王が生きている間、私の誓ったことは実行しないことにする。息子の代にそれらのことが起こって、彼の子孫はみな滅びる。」
1And it came to pass after these things, that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. 2And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.21.2 seem…: Heb. be good in thine eyes 3And Naboth said to Ahab, The LORD forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee. 4And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.
5¶ But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread? 6And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my vineyard. 7And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite. 8So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city, dwelling with Naboth. 9And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people:21.9 on high…: Heb. in the top of the people 10And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die. 11And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them, and as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them. 12They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. 13And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. 14Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead.
15¶ And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead. 16And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.
17¶ And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 18Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, which is in Samaria: behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, whither he is gone down to possess it. 19And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine. 20And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee: because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the LORD. 21Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy posterity, and will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, 22And will make thine house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and made Israel to sin. 23And of Jezebel also spake the LORD, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.21.23 wall: or, ditch 24Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat.
25¶ But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the LORD, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.21.25 stirred…: or, incited 26And he did very abominably in following idols, according to all things as did the Amorites, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. 27And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly. 28And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 29Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house.
