王位をめぐる争い
1晩年のダビデ王は寝たきりになりました。毛布を何枚かけても体が暖まらないのです。 2そこで、側近の者が提案しました。「若い娘を、お世話役のそばめとしてはいかがでしょう。添い寝させて、お体を暖めさせるのです。」
3-4さっそく、国中くまなく探して、いちばん美しい娘を見つけ出すことになりました。最後にシュネム出身のアビシャグが選ばれ、王のもとへ連れて来られました。王を暖めるため、その腕に抱かれて寝ることになったのです。しかし、王は彼女をそばめにはしませんでした。
5そのころ、ハギテの子であるアドニヤは、自分こそ老いた父に代わって王位につくべきだと考えて、戦車を買い集め、騎兵を雇い、自分の前を走る五十人の近衛兵をそろえました。 6父のダビデ王は、それまで一度も彼をたしなめたことがありませんでした。彼はアブシャロムのすぐ下の弟で、とてもハンサムでした。 7アドニヤが将軍ヨアブと祭司エブヤタルに思惑を打ち明けると、二人とも賛成しました。 8しかし、祭司ツァドク、ベナヤ、預言者ナタン、シムイ、レイ、ダビデ軍の勇士たちは、あくまでも王に忠誠を尽くし、アドニヤにくみすることはありませんでした。
9アドニヤはエン・ロゲルへ行き、ゾヘレテの石のそばで、羊、牛、太った子やぎをいけにえとしてささげ、それから、即位式の立会人として、自分の兄弟とユダの政府高官を全員招きました。 10しかし、預言者ナタン、ベナヤ、王の勇士たち、それに、兄弟のうち弟ソロモンだけは招きませんでした。
11預言者ナタンはソロモンの母バテ・シェバに会い、こう勧めました。「ハギテの子アドニヤが王になり、しかも、王様が少しもお気づきでないことをご存じですか。 12ご自身と、ご子息ソロモン様の無事を願われるなら、これから申し上げるとおりになさってください。 13すぐに王様のところへ行って、『あなたは私に、ソロモンが次の王になると、お約束になったではありませんか。それなのに、なぜ、アドニヤが王になっているのでしょう』と申し上げるのです。 14お話の最中に私もまいり、あなたの訴えが事実であることを王に申しましょう。」
15バテ・シェバは、言われたとおり王の寝室へ行きました。王は非常に年老いていて、アビシャグが身の回りの世話をしていました。 16バテ・シェバがていねいにおじぎをすると、王は、「何の用か」と尋ねました。
17「王様に申し上げます。あなたは、主に誓って、わが子ソロモンが次の王になるとおっしゃいました。 18それなのに、アドニヤが新しい王になっています。しかも、あなたはそれをご存じありません。 19アドニヤは即位を祝って、牛や太ったやぎや、たくさんの羊をいけにえとしてささげ、王のお子様全部と祭司エブヤタル様、それにヨアブ将軍を招きました。けれども、ソロモンだけは招かれませんでした。 20今、イスラエル中の者が、アドニヤが後継者として選ばれるかどうか、あなたの決定を待っております。 21王様がはっきり決着をつけてくださらないと、ソロモンも私も、あなたがお亡くなりになったとたん、謀反人として捕らえられ、処刑されることになるでしょう。」
22-23彼女が話しているうちに、側近の者が来て、「預言者ナタン様がお目どおりを願い出ています」と伝えました。ナタンは王の前に出ると、うやうやしく一礼し、 24話を切り出しました。「王様。あなたはアドニヤ様を後継者にお選びになったのでしょうか。 25実は今日、あの方は即位の祝いとして、牛や太ったやぎや、たくさんの羊をいけにえとしてささげ、王のお子様方を祝賀会に招かれました。ヨアブ将軍と祭司エブヤタル様も招かれました。一同はあの方の前で飲み食いし、『アドニヤ王、ばんざい！』と叫んだということです。 26しかし、祭司ツァドク様、ベナヤ様、ソロモン王子、それに私は招かれませんでした。 27これは、あなたがご承知の上でなされたことでしょうか。あなたはまだ、お子様のうちどなたを次の王にするか仰せではございませんが。」
28王は、「バテ・シェバをここに呼びなさい」と言いました。席をはずしていた彼女は戻って来て、王の前に立ちました。 29王は誓って言いました。「私をあらゆる危険から助け出してくださった主は生きておられる。 30いつかイスラエルの神、主の前でおまえに誓ったとおり、今日、おまえの子ソロモンを王とし、私の王座につかせる。」
31バテ・シェバはもう一度うやうやしくおじぎをすると、感きわまって言いました。「ありがとうございます、わが君。どうか、いつまでもおすこやかに。」
32「祭司ツァドクと預言者ナタン、それにベナヤをここに呼びなさい。」王は続けて言いました。三人が前に出ると、 33王はこう命じました。「ソロモンと私の家来とをギホンへ連れて行きなさい。ソロモンは私の雌らばに乗せて。 34祭司ツァドクと預言者ナタンは、そこでソロモンに油を注ぎ、イスラエルの王とするのだ。それからラッパを吹き鳴らし、『ソロモン王、ばんざい！』と叫びなさい。 35ソロモンが戻りしだい、新しい王として王座につけよう。私はソロモンを、イスラエルとユダの王に任じる。」
36ベナヤが答えました。「アーメン！ 神様をほめたたえます。 37主があなたとともにおられたように、ソロモン様ともおられますように。ソロモン王を、あなた以上に偉大な王としてくださいますように！」
38こうして、祭司ツァドク、預言者ナタン、ベナヤ、王の家臣たちは、ソロモンを王の雌らばに乗せてギホンに向かいました。 39ギホンに着くと、ツァドクは天幕から神聖な油を取り出し、ソロモンの頭に注ぎました。ラッパが吹き鳴らされ、人々はみな、「ソロモン王、ばんざい！」と叫びました。 40彼らはソロモンのあとに従ってエルサレムへ帰って来ましたが、その道中は喜び祝う歌声に満ちあふれました。
41一方、アドニヤと招待客はちょうど食事を終えたところでした。何やら外が騒がしいので、ヨアブがいぶかしげに言いました。「いったい何事だ。何の騒ぎだ？」
42そのことばが終わらないうちに、祭司エブヤタルの子ヨナタンが駆け込んで来たので、アドニヤは言いました。「入りなさい。おまえは勇敢な者だから、良い知らせを持って来たに違いない。」
43ヨナタンは答えました。「わが君、ダビデ王は、ソロモン様が次の王だと発表しました！ 44-45しかも、ソロモン様をご自分の雌らばに乗せ、ギホンへ行かせたのです。祭司ツァドク、預言者ナタン、それにベナヤが同行し、王の護衛隊が警護に当たりました。ツァドクとナタンは、ソロモン様の頭に油を注いで、新しい王にしました。一行が戻って来たので、町中が喜びにわきかえっています。あの騒がしい物音をお聞きください。 46-47ソロモン様はすでに王座におつきです。国民はこぞってダビデ王に、『どうか神様が、あなたを豊かに祝福してくださった以上に、ソロモン様を祝福してくださるように。ソロモン王を、あなた以上に栄えさせてくださるように』とお祝いを申し上げています。王は床についたまま、人々の祝福のことばを受けておいでです。 48しかも、『私が生きているうちに、息子の一人を選んで、王座につけてくださったイスラエルの神、主を心からほめたたえる』と言っておられるとか。」
49-50これを聞いて、アドニヤと招待客は飛び上がらんばかりに驚き、狼狽しました。この先、自分たちがどうなるかわかったものではありません。客たちは恐ろしくなって、逃げ帰りました。アドニヤは幕屋に駆け込み、祭壇の角にしがみつきました。 51アドニヤが聖所に入って、命乞いをしていることが報告されると、 52ソロモンは言いました。「もし彼が潔くふるまうなら、危害は加えまい。しかし、そうでなければいのちはない。」 53ソロモン王はアドニヤを呼びにやり、祭壇から下ろさせました。彼が王の前に来て恐れかしこんで礼をすると、王は、「家へ帰るがよい」とあっさり言って去らせました。
Adonijah sets himself up as king
1When King David was very old, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him. 2So his attendants said to him, ‘Let us look for a young virgin to serve the king and take care of him. She can lie beside him so that our lord the king may keep warm.’
3Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful young woman and found Abishag, a Shunammite, and brought her to the king. 4The woman was very beautiful; she took care of the king and waited on him, but the king had no sexual relations with her.
5Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, ‘I will be king.’ So he got chariots and horses1:5 Or charioteers ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him. 6(His father had never rebuked him by asking, ‘Why do you behave as you do?’ He was also very handsome and was born next after Absalom.)
7Adonijah conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, and they gave him their support. 8But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei and Rei and David’s special guard did not join Adonijah.
9Adonijah then sacrificed sheep, cattle and fattened calves at the Stone of Zoheleth near En Rogel. He invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the royal officials of Judah, 10but he did not invite Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the special guard or his brother Solomon.
11Then Nathan asked Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, ‘Have you not heard that Adonijah, the son of Haggith, has become king, and our lord David knows nothing about it? 12Now then, let me advise you how you can save your own life and the life of your son Solomon. 13Go in to King David and say to him, “My lord the king, did you not swear to me your servant: ‘Surely Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne’? Why then has Adonijah become king?” 14While you are still there talking to the king, I will come in and add my word to what you have said.’
15So Bathsheba went to see the aged king in his room, where Abishag the Shunammite was attending him. 16Bathsheba bowed down, prostrating herself before the king.
‘What is it you want?’ the king asked.
17She said to him, ‘My lord, you yourself swore to me your servant by the Lord your God: “Solomon your son shall become king after me, and he will sit on my throne.” 18But now Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, do not know about it. 19He has sacrificed great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the king’s sons, Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited Solomon your servant. 20My lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to learn from you who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21Otherwise, as soon as my lord the king is laid to rest with his ancestors, I and my son Solomon will be treated as criminals.’
22While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet arrived. 23And the king was told, ‘Nathan the prophet is here.’ So he went before the king and bowed with his face to the ground.
24Nathan said, ‘Have you, my lord the king, declared that Adonijah shall be king after you, and that he will sit on your throne? 25Today he has gone down and sacrificed great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep. He has invited all the king’s sons, the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest. At this very moment they are eating and drinking with him and saying, “Long live King Adonijah!” 26But me your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon he did not invite. 27Is this something my lord the king has done without letting his servants know who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?’
David makes Solomon king
28Then King David said, ‘Call in Bathsheba.’ So she came into the king’s presence and stood before him.
29The king then took an oath: ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble, 30I will surely carry out this very day what I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel: Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.’
31Then Bathsheba bowed down with her face to the ground, prostrating herself before the king, and said, ‘May my lord King David live for ever!’
32King David said, ‘Call in Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.’ When they came before the king, 33he said to them: ‘Take your lord’s servants with you and put Solomon my son on my own mule and take him down to Gihon. 34There shall Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel. Blow the trumpet and shout, “Long live King Solomon!” 35Then you are to go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.’
36Benaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king, ‘Amen! May the Lord, the God of my lord the king, so declare it. 37As the Lord was with my lord the king, so may he be with Solomon to make his throne even greater than the throne of my lord King David!’
38So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites went down and put Solomon on King David’s mule, and they escorted him to Gihon. 39Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the sacred tent and anointed Solomon. Then they sounded the trumpet and all the people shouted, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ 40And all the people went up after him, playing pipes and rejoicing greatly, so that the ground shook with the sound.
41Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they were finishing their feast. On hearing the sound of the trumpet, Joab asked, ‘What’s the meaning of all the noise in the city?’
42Even as he was speaking, Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest arrived. Adonijah said, ‘Come in. A worthy man like you must be bringing good news.’
43‘Not at all!’ Jonathan answered. ‘Our lord King David has made Solomon king. 44The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites, and they have put him on the king’s mule, 45and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon. From there they have gone up cheering, and the city resounds with it. That’s the noise you hear. 46Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne. 47Also, the royal officials have come to congratulate our lord King David, saying, “May your God make Solomon’s name more famous than yours and his throne greater than yours!” And the king bowed in worship on his bed 48and said, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has allowed my eyes to see a successor on my throne today.” ’
49At this, all Adonijah’s guests rose in alarm and dispersed. 50But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, went and took hold of the horns of the altar. 51Then Solomon was told, ‘Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon and is clinging to the horns of the altar. He says, “Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.” ’
52Solomon replied, ‘If he shows himself to be worthy, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground; but if evil is found in him, he will die.’ 53Then King Solomon sent men, and they brought him down from the altar. And Adonijah came and bowed down to King Solomon, and Solomon said, ‘Go to your home.’
