十戒
1それから、神は次のようなことば（十戒）を告げました。
2「わたしは、あなたをエジプトの奴隷生活から救い出した、あなたの神、主である。
3わたしのほかに、どんなものも神として拝んではならない。
4決して偶像を造ってはならない。鳥でも動物でも魚でも、どんな像も造ってはならない。 5それらを拝んでもならない。どのような方法で礼拝してもならない。あなたの神はこのわたしだけである。わたしはねたみ深いから、わたしとほかの神を同時に愛することは許さない。わたしの罰は、わたしを憎む者の子ども、孫、ひ孫までも及ぶ。 6しかし、わたしを愛し、わたしの命令を守る者には、千代に至るまでも恵みを与えよう。
7実行するつもりもないのに、むやみにわたしの名を使って誓ってはならない。そのようなことをしたら必ず罰せられる。
8主の定めた安息日を特別の日として守りなさい。 9すべての仕事は六日のうちにすませなさい。 10七日目は神の休息の日だから、その日は一日、人も家畜も仕事をしてはならない。外国人も、ここでいっしょに住んでいる限り、この戒めを守る義務がある。 11わたしが六日の間に天と地と海と、その中のいっさいのものを造り、七日目に休んだからだ。わたしは安息日を祝福し、特別な日と定めた。
12あなたの両親を尊敬しなさい。そうすれば、主であるわたしが与える国で、長く幸せな一生を送ることができる。
13人を殺してはならない。
14姦淫してはならない。
15盗んではならない。
16うそをついてはならない。
17隣人の家をうらやんではならない。隣人の妻に情欲を燃やしたり、使用人、牛、ろば、そのほか何でも、隣人の持ち物を欲しがったり、持ち主をねたんだりしてはならない。」
18人々はみな、山にいなずまが走り、煙が立ちこめるのを見ました。また、雷と恐ろしいラッパの音が鳴り続けるのも聞きました。だれもが遠く離れて立ち、恐怖に身を震わせました。
19人々はモーセに言いました。「神様がどんなことをおっしゃったか教えてください。私たちは言われたとおり従います。ただ、神様が直接私たちにお話しにならないようにしてください。そうしないと、私たちは死んでしまいますから。」
20「心配はいらない。神様がおいでになったのは、偉大なるお力をあなたがたに示すためだ。神様の力を知れば、これからは罪を犯すことを恐れるようになるだろう。」
21民が遠く離れて立ち尽くしている中を、モーセは神のおられる濃い暗闇の中に入って行きました。

祭壇について
22主はモーセに、神の代弁者として人々に語るよう命じました。「わたしは天からあなたがたに呼びかけ、わたしの気持ちを知らせた。あなたがたはその証人である。 23金や銀、そのほかの偶像を造ったり拝んだりしてはならないことを忘れてはならない。
24わたしの祭壇は簡素な土の祭壇でなければならない。羊と牛の、焼き尽くすいけにえや和解のいけにえなどをその上でささげなさい。祭壇はわたしが命じる場所にだけ築けばよい。そこで、わたしはあなたがたを祝福する。 25石を使うのはさしつかえないが、切り石はいけない。道具を使って、石をけずったり刻んだりしないようにしなさい。そんな石はわたしの祭壇にふさわしくない。 26祭壇には階段をつけてはならない。服の間からあなたがたの裸が見えたりするといけないからだ。
The Ten Commandments
1And God spoke all these words:
2‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
3‘You shall have no other gods before20:3 Or besides me.
4You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
8Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9Six days you shall labour and do all your work, 10but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
12Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
13You shall not murder.
14You shall not commit adultery.
15You shall not steal.
16You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour.
17You shall not covet your neighbour’s house. You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.’
18When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance 19and said to Moses, ‘Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not let God speak to us or we will die.’
20Moses said to the people, ‘Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.’
21The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
Idols and altars
22Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Tell the Israelites this: “You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven: 23do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.
24‘ “Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honoured, I will come to you and bless you. 25If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it. 26And do not go up to my altar on steps, or your private parts may be exposed.”
