海を渡る
1神はモーセに告げました。 2「引き返して、ミグドルと海との間、バアル・ツェフォンに面したピ・ハヒロテに向かいなさい。そこの岸辺にテントを張るのだ。 3ファラオはきっと、『イスラエル人どもは砂漠と海の間で立ち往生しているに違いない』と考えるだろう。 4そして、またも意地になって、あとを追いかけて来る。すべてわたしの思うつぼだ。ファラオとその軍隊に、はっきりとわたしの力と栄光を見せよう。エジプト人も今度こそ、わたしが主であることを認めるようになる。」
イスラエル人はそのとおりにしました。
5三日たってもイスラエル人がエジプトへは戻ろうとせず、そのまま逃げ出すつもりらしいという知らせが届くと、王と家臣たちはまた気が変わりました。「あの奴隷どもをみな逃がすとは、なんと愚かなことをしてしまったのだ。」 6このまま放ってはおけないと、ファラオは戦車に跳び乗り、先頭に立って追跡の指揮をとりました。 7あとにはエジプト戦車隊の精鋭六百と将校の戦車が続きます。 8こうして追跡が始まりました。みすみすエジプトの富を持って行かせるのは、何としても許せません。 9馬、戦車、騎手、歩兵と、王の全機動部隊が追跡作戦に駆り出されました。エジプト軍は、バアル・ツェフォンの手前、ピ・ハヒロテの岸辺に野営していたイスラエル人に追いつきました。
10イスラエル人が見ていると、はるかかなたからエジプト軍がやって来ます。彼らはだんだんスピードを増して近づいて来るのです。人々はすっかり震え上がり、主に助けを求めました。 11そして、ついにはモーセに泣きごとを言うのでした。「エジプトには墓が足りないので、こんな砂漠まで連れ出して死なせようというのですか。これでは、何のためにエジプトから逃げ出したかわかりません。 12そもそも初めからおかしいと思ったのです。だからあの時も、このまま放っておいてくれと言ったのに。こんな荒野で死ぬくらいなら、エジプトで奴隷になっていたほうがまだましです。」
13しかし、モーセは言いました。「みんな、怖がってはいけない。今いる場所にしっかり腰をすえて、今日、主がすばらしい方法で救ってくださるのを、よく見ようではないか。あのエジプト人を見るのも、今日が最後だ。 14主が代わりに戦ってくださる。だから、みんなは指一本、動かす必要もない。」
15主はモーセに命じました。「いつまでもわたしに叫び求めないで、人々を前進させなさい。 16杖を海（紅海）の上に差し伸べると、水が分かれて道ができる。その乾いた土の上を歩いて海を渡りなさい。 17わたしはエジプト人の心をかたくなにさせ、彼らにあなたがたのあとを追わせる。だがその時、ファラオとその全軍勢、戦車や騎手たちをわたしは滅ぼす。そしてわたしの栄光を現す。 18全エジプトは、わたしが主であることを知る。」
19その時、いつも人々の前を進んでいた神の使いがうしろに移ったので、雲の柱も、 20ちょうどイスラエル人とエジプト軍の間に立ちふさがるように、うしろに移りました。突然、真っ黒な雲が垂れ込めました。あたりは夜のように暗くなり、エジプト人にはイスラエル人が見えなくなってしまったのです。
21モーセが杖を海に差し伸べると、主は海の真ん中に道を作りました。両側には水の壁がそそり立ち、強い東風が一晩中吹きつけて、海の底に乾いた地が現れたのです。 22イスラエル人は、その乾いた道を進みました。
23エジプト軍もあとを追ってどっと海の中の道へなだれ込みました。ファラオの馬、戦車、騎手など全部です。 24明け方になって、主は火と雲の柱の間からエジプトの軍勢をごらんになり、彼らを攪乱しました。 25車輪がはずれて、戦車は海の真ん中で、動きが取れなくなってしまったのです。「逃げろ！ ぐずぐずするなっ。とてもかなわない。やつらには主がついている！」あちこちから叫び声が上がります。
26主はイスラエル人がみな無事に渡り終えたのを確かめると、モーセに言いました。「もう一度、手を海の上に差し伸べなさい。そうすれば水が戻って、エジプト軍の戦車と騎手に覆いかぶさるだろう。」 27モーセはそのとおりにしました。たちまち水の壁はくずれ、海は元どおりになりました。何事もなかったように、朝日を受けて波がきらきら輝いています。エジプト軍は迫る水から逃げようとしましたが、海の中に引きずりこまれました。 28ついさっきまで道だった所も、エジプト軍の戦車も騎手も、みな海の底に沈みました。あとを追って海に入ったエジプト軍の中でいのちが助かった者は、一人もいませんでした。
29イスラエル人は、両側に水の壁がそそり立つ中を歩いて、海の中の乾いた地を渡ったのです。 30こうして主はその日、イスラエル人をエジプト軍の手から救い出されました。イスラエル人は岸に流れついたエジプト人の死体を見ました。 31主はなんという大きな奇跡を起こして助けてくださったのでしょう。人々はあまりに大きな主の力を見て、主を恐れ、主とそのしもべモーセとを信じました。
1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baal-zephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea. 3For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in. 4And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD. And they did so.
5¶ And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us? 6And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him: 7And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them. 8And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out with an high hand. 9But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pi-hahiroth, before Baal-zephon.
10¶ And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD. 11And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? 12Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.
13¶ And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.14.13 for the…: or, for whereas ye have seen the Egyptians to day 14The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
15¶ And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward: 16But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. 17And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. 18And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.
19¶ And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: 20And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.
21And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
23¶ And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians, 25And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians.14.25 that they…: or, and made them to go heavily
26¶ And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen. 27And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.14.27 overthrew: Heb. shook off 28And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them. 29But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. 30Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore. 31And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.14.31 work: Heb. hand
