1新総督としてカイザリヤに着いて三日後に、フェストはエルサレムへ来ました。 2祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちはさっそく面会を求め、パウロの一件を持ち出しました。 3願うことはただ一つ、パウロを直ちにエルサレムに送り返してほしいということでした。彼らは、途中で待ち伏せて殺そうと思っていたのです。 4そんなこととは知らないフェストは、パウロはカイザリヤに拘留中だし、自分もすぐ戻るので、 5パウロを告発したければ、それ相応の人が自分と同行し、向こうで裁判にかけてはどうかと提案しました。
総督フェストの決定
6八日か十日の後、フェストはカイザリヤに帰り、翌日パウロの裁判が開かれました。
7パウロが出廷したとたん、エルサレムから来たユダヤ人たちが取り囲み、次々に重い罪名をあげて訴えたものの、それを証拠立てることはできませんでした。 8この訴えに対して、パウロは、「私は潔白です。別にユダヤ人の律法に反対したわけでもなく、神殿を汚したことも、ローマ政府にそむいたこともありません」ときっぱり否定しました。
9そこでフェストは、ユダヤ人の歓心を買おうとして、パウロに尋ねました。「どうだ、エルサレムで裁判を受ける気はないか。もちろん、私の前でだが。」
10-11「それよりも、ローマ皇帝に上訴する権利を要求いたします。私が無実であることは、あなた様もご存じのはずです。もし、何か死刑にあたるようなことをしているのなら、逃げも隠れもいたしません。しかし、私は潔白でございます。だれにも、私をこの人たちの手に渡して殺させる権利はありません。私はカイザルに上訴いたします。」
12フェストは事態をどう始末したものかと、顧問たちに相談してから、「いいだろう、おまえはカイザルに上訴したのだから、カイザルのところへ行きなさい」と言いました。
13数日後、新総督を表敬するため、ヘロデ・アグリッパ（二世）王がベルニケと共にフェストを訪問しました。 14二人が何日間か滞在している間に、フェストはパウロの一件を王に持ち出しました。「実は、ペリクスから引き継いだ囚人が一人いるのですが、 15どうも祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちは、彼を死刑にしたいらしいのです。私がエルサレムへ行った時、そう申していました。 16もちろん私は、ローマの法律では、裁判もせずに人を有罪にはできないと答えました。それでこの男に、訴える者たちの前で釈明する機会を与えることにしたのです。 17告発者たちがこちらに来た翌日、私は裁判を開き、パウロを出廷させました。 18ところが、訴えというのが全く予想外で、 19ユダヤの宗教上の問題なのです。なんでも、死んでしまったイエスとかいう人物のことで、パウロはその人が生きていると主張しているのです。 20こんな事件は、とても手に負えそうもありません。そこで、エルサレムで裁判を受ける気はないかと尋ねてみたら、 21なんとこの男は、カイザルに上訴すると言いだしまして。しかたありません。皇帝陛下のもとへ送る手はずが整うまで、牢に入れてあるのです。」
22アグリッパはこの話に興味を示し、「直接、その男の話を聞いてみたいものだ」と言ったので、フェストは、「では、明日お聞きいただきましょう」と答えました。
23翌日、盛装した王とベルニケが、司令官たちや町の有力者たちと連れ立って法廷に入ると、フェストはパウロを連れて来るように命じました。
24まずフェストが立ち上がり、言いました。「アグリッパ王、ならびにご列席の皆さん。この地方のユダヤ人もエルサレムのユダヤ人も、この男の死刑を要求しております。 25しかし、私の見る限り、彼は何も死刑にあたるようなことはしていないのであります。ところが、この男が自分でカイザルに上訴しましたので、私は、彼をカイザルのもとに送ることに決めたしだいです。 26しかし、皇帝に何と書き送ったらよいでしょう。告訴できるだけの理由が何もないのです。それで皆さんの前に、特にアグリッパ王の前に連れてまいりました。皆さんに調べていただき、何と書いたらいいか教えていただきたいのです。 27何の理由もなく囚人を皇帝陛下のもとに送るのは、はなはだ理屈に合わないことだからです。」
1Now when Festus was come into the province, after three days he ascended from Cæsarea to Jerusalem. 2Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him, 3And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him. 4But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Cæsarea, and that he himself would depart shortly thither. 5Let them therefore, said he, which among you are able, go down with me, and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness in him. 6And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Cæsarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought. 7And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove. 8While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Cæsar, have I offended any thing at all. 9But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me? 10Then said Paul, I stand at Cæsar’s judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest. 11For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Cæsar. 12Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Cæsar? unto Cæsar shalt thou go.
13And after certain days king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Cæsarea to salute Festus. 14And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul’s cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix: 15About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, desiring to have judgment against him. 16To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him. 17Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth. 18Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed: 19But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive. 20And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters. 21But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Cæsar. 22Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.
23And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus’ commandment Paul was brought forth. 24And Festus said, King Agrippa, and all men which are here present with us, ye see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer. 25But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him. 26Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have somewhat to write. 27For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not withal to signify the crimes laid against him.
