1「私の兄弟とも父とも言うべき皆さん。どうか、私の申し上げることを聞いてください。」 2パウロがヘブル語で話すのを聞いて、人々はしーんと静まり返りました。 3「私はキリキヤの町タルソで生まれたユダヤ人ですが、エルサレムのガマリエル先生のもとで教育を受けました。先生の門下生として、ユダヤの律法には、特にきびしく従うように教えられました。つまり、今の皆さん同様、こと神に関する限り、人並み以上に熱心だったのです。 4クリスチャンを迫害し、逃げる者たちを、どこまでも執念深く追い回し、男でも女でも手当たりしだいに縛り上げて投獄したり、殺したり……。 5そのことは、大祭司様も、議会の議員の方々も証言してくださるでしょう。この人たちに頼んで、ダマスコに住むユダヤ人の指導者あてに、クリスチャンを見つけしだい縛り上げ、処罰するためにエルサレムへ連行することを認めさせる手紙を、書いてもらったくらいですから。
6ところが、旅をして、もうすぐダマスコという時、あれはちょうど正午ごろでしたが、突然まばゆい光が、天からさっと私を照らしたのです。 7思わず倒れ伏した私の耳に、『パウロ、パウロ。なぜわたしを迫害するのか』と呼びかける声が聞こえました。 8『そう言われるあなたは？』と尋ねると、その声は、『あなたが迫害しているナザレのイエスだ』と言われるではありませんか。 9いっしょにいた人たちには、光は見えましたが、ことばはわかりませんでした。
10『主よ。私はいったい、どうしたらよいのでしょう。』私がこう尋ねると、『立って、ダマスコの町に入りなさい。将来どんなことがあなたの身に起こるかは、そこで教えられるだろう』というお答えです。
11ところが、あまりのまぶしさに目が見えなくなり、連れの者にダマスコまで手を引いて行ってもらわなければなりませんでした。 12ダマスコには、律法を忠実に守る、信心深いアナニヤという人がいました。ダマスコのすべてのユダヤ人に、たいそう評判のよい人でした。 13この人が来て、『兄弟パウロ。見えるようになれ』と言うと、たちまち彼の姿が見えるようになりました。
14するとアナニヤはこう言ったのです。『先祖たちの神があなたをお選びになったのです。神がそのことをあなたに知らせ、イエス・キリストに会わせ、その御声を聞かせてくださったのです。 15あなたがこの方の教えを携えて行き、自分で見聞きしたことを、あらゆる所のあらゆる人たちに伝えるためです。 16さあ、何をためらっているのです。お立ちなさい。主の名を呼んでバプテスマ（洗礼）を受け、罪をすっかり洗いきよめていただくのです。』
17-18こうしてエルサレムに帰り、ある日、神殿で祈っていると、うつらうつら夢ごこちになり、神の幻を見たのです。神様は、『さあ、急いでエルサレムを離れなさい。ここの人たちは、あなたがわたしの教えを伝えても信じないから』とおっしゃいました。
19私は答えました。『主よ。人々はかつて私がどこの会堂ででも、あなたを信じる人たちを投獄し、むち打ったことを、いやと言うほど知っているのです。 20しかも私は、あのステパノが殺された時には、それに賛成して現場に立ち合ったばかりか、石を投げつける者たちの上着の番をしたのです。』 21しかし神様は、『さあ出発しなさい。あなたを遠く、外国人のところへ派遣します』と言われました。」
22パウロがここまで話した時、人々はいっせいに叫びだしました。「こんなやつは消しちまえ！ 生かしておくな。殺せ、殺せ！」 23大声でわめく声、声、声……。あたりは興奮のるつぼとなりました。上着は宙に舞い、あちこちで、ちりをつかんでまき散らす者も出るしまつです。
24どうしてこれほどの怒りを買うのか、その事情を知りたいと思った司令官は、パウロを兵営に引き入れ、むち打って取り調べようと思いました。
25兵士たちが縛り上げた時、パウロはそばに立っている士官に、「ローマ市民の私を、裁判にもかけずにむち打ってもよいのですか」と言いました。
26これを聞いて、士官はあわてて司令官のところへ駆けつけ、「いかがいたしましょう。あの男はローマ市民だと言っております」と耳打ちしました。
27そこで司令官がじきじきに問いただしました。
「はっきり言いなさい。あなたはローマ市民なのか。」
「言われるとおり、ローマ市民です。」
28「私もローマの市民権を持っているが、ずいぶん金を積んだものだ。」
「私は生まれながらの市民です。」
29パウロを打とうとそこに立っていた兵士たちは、ローマ市民だとわかったとたん、びっくりして身を引きました。司令官も、知らなかったとはいえ、ローマ市民を縛ってむち打つように命令したので、ひどく不安になりました。
最高議会に立つパウロ
30翌日、司令官はパウロの鎖を解き、祭司長たちに、最高議会の召集を命じました。その場にパウロを連れ出し、なぜ彼がユダヤ人に告訴されたのか確かめようと思ったのです。
1‘Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defence.’
2When they heard him speak to them in Aramaic, they became very quiet.
Then Paul said: 3‘I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city. I studied under Gamaliel and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors. I was just as zealous for God as any of you are today. 4I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison, 5as the high priest and all the Council can themselves testify. I even obtained letters from them to their associates in Damascus, and went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished.
6‘About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me. 7I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, “Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?”
8‘ “Who are you, Lord?” I asked.
‘ “I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 9My companions saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of him who was speaking to me.
10‘ “What shall I do, Lord?” I asked.
‘ “Get up,” the Lord said, “and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.” 11My companions led me by the hand into Damascus, because the brilliance of the light had blinded me.
12‘A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. 13He stood beside me and said, “Brother Saul, receive your sight!” And at that very moment I was able to see him.
14‘Then he said: “The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth. 15You will be his witness to all people of what you have seen and heard. 16And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptised and wash your sins away, calling on his name.”
17‘When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance 18and saw the Lord speaking to me. “Quick!” he said. “Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people here will not accept your testimony about me.”
19‘ “Lord,” I replied, “these people know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those who believe in you. 20And when the blood of your martyr22:20 Or witness Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.”
21‘Then the Lord said to me, “Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.” ’
Paul the Roman citizen
22The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, ‘Rid the earth of him! He’s not fit to live!’
23As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air, 24the commander ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks. He directed that he be flogged and interrogated in order to find out why the people were shouting at him like this. 25As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, ‘Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?’
26When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. ‘What are you going to do?’ he asked. ‘This man is a Roman citizen.’
27The commander went to Paul and asked, ‘Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?’
‘Yes, I am,’ he answered.
28Then the commander said, ‘I had to pay a lot of money for my citizenship.’
‘But I was born a citizen,’ Paul replied.
29Those who were about to interrogate him withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realised that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen, in chains.
Paul before the Sanhedrin
30The commander wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews. So the next day he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the members of the Sanhedrin to assemble. Then he brought Paul and set him before them.
