1イコニオムの町でも、パウロとバルナバは連れ立って会堂に行き、力強く語ったので、ユダヤ人も外国人も、大ぜい神を信じました。
2しかし、神のことばを軽んじるユダヤ人たちは、根も葉もないことで二人を中傷し、人々の不信をかき立てました。 3それにもかかわらず、二人は長い間そこに滞在し、大胆に宣教を続けたのです。主は、すばらしい奇跡を行わせ、二人のことばが真実であることを証明なさいました。 4ところが、町の人たちの意見は真っ二つに分かれました。ユダヤ人の指導者側の意見に賛成する者がいる一方、使徒たちの味方につく者もいました。
ルステラでの出来事
5-6外国人とユダヤ人たちが彼らの指導者たちと結託し、使徒たちを襲い、石で打ち殺そうとたくらんでいるという情報が、二人の耳に入りました。二人は急いで町を出ると、ルカオニヤ地方の町のルステラとデルベ、またその周辺に難をのがれ、 7そこで福音を伝えました。
8ルステラにいた時のことです。一人の足の不自由な人に出会いました。生まれてこのかた、一歩も歩いたことがない人でした。 9その人が、パウロの説教に一心に耳を傾けていたのです。パウロは彼に目をとめ、彼に信仰があるのを見て、 10大声で、「立ちなさい」と言いました。その瞬間、彼は跳び上がり、勢いよく歩きだしたのです。
11これを見た人々は、その地方のことばで、「神々だ。人間の姿をした神々だ」と叫びました。 12そして、大騒ぎしながら、二人をギリシヤの神々にまつり上げたのです。バルナバはゼウス、パウロはおもに話をしたので、ヘルメスだということになりました。 13町の門のすぐ外にあるゼウス神殿の祭司までが、花飾りを持って駆けつけ、門のところで群衆といっしょに雄牛を数頭いけにえとし、二人にささげようとしました。
14バルナバとパウロは、この、神を汚すふるまいに仰天し、着物を引き裂いて群衆の中に駆け込み、大声で叫びました。
15「皆さん。なんということをするのです。私たちは、皆さんと同じ、ただの人間ではありませんか。こんな愚かなことはおやめなさい！ 天と地と海、それにその中のすべてのものをお造りになった神を礼拝しなさい。私たちは、そのために、福音を伝えに来たのです。 16過去の時代には、神様は、あらゆる国民がそれぞれ自分勝手な道に進むことを許しておられました。 17といっても、神のことが全然わからなかったわけではありません。神を思い起こさせるものは、いつでも私たちの周囲にあったのです。たとえば、雨を降らせてくださったのも神ですし、食べ物が不足しないようにと、収穫を与えて、喜びに満たしてくださったのも神なのです。」
18こうしてパウロとバルナバは、やっとのことで、彼らがいけにえをささげるのをやめさせました。
19しかし、その数日後、また別の事件が起こりました。アンテオケとイコニオムから数人のユダヤ人が来て、町の人たちを味方に引き入れ、パウロを襲って石を投げつけたのです。ぐったりとしたパウロを見て、てっきり死んだものと思った彼らは、パウロを町の外へ引きずり出しました。 20クリスチャンたちはパウロの回りを取り巻き、心配そうにながめていました。するとどうでしょう。彼はむくりと起き上がり、何事もなかったように町へ帰って行ったのです。翌日、パウロはバルナバといっしょに、デルベに向けて出発しました。 21そこで福音を語り、多くの人をクリスチャンにしてから、ルステラ、イコニオム、アンテオケへと引き返しました。 22それぞれの町でクリスチャンたちに会い、ますます神を愛し、また互いに愛し合うように教え、どんな迫害にもくじけず、信仰にとどまり続けるようにと励ましました。そして、「神の国に入るには、いろいろ苦しい目に会わなければならない」と語りました。 23二人は、どこの教会でも長老を任命し、彼らのために断食して祈り、だれよりも信頼する主にゆだねました。
24それから、二人はピシデヤを通ってパンフリヤに帰り、 25また、ペルガでみことばを語ってから、アタリヤに行きました。 26そして、船でアンテオケに帰って来たのです。この町は、今まさに終えてきたばかりの務めを、神からゆだねられて出発した所でした。 27二人はさっそく信者たちを集めて伝道旅行の報告をし、神が外国人にも信仰の門を開いてくださったことを話しました。 28それから、かなり長い間、アンテオケで信者たちといっしょに過ごしました。
1And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed. 2But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren. 3Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands. 4But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles. 5And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them, 6They were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about: 7And there they preached the gospel.
8¶ And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked: 9The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed, 10Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked. 11And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men. 12And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker. 13Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people. 14Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out, 15And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: 16Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. 17Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness. 18And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them.
19¶ And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead. 20Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe. 21And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch, 22Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. 23And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. 24And after they had passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia. 25And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia: 26And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled. 27And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles. 28And there they abode long time with the disciples.
