しいたげと労苦と冷酷さ
1次に私は、世界中で行われているしいたげと悲しみを見ました。しいたげられている人が涙を流しても、だれも手を貸そうとしません。一方で、しいたげる者たちはしっかりと手を組んでいます。 2私は、死んだ人のほうが生きている人よりましだと思いました。 3一番幸福なのは、生まれて来なかった人で、地上の悪を見たことのない人です。
4次に私は、物事を成功させる原動力がねたみであることを知りました。これもまたむなしいことで、風を追いかけるようなものです。
5-6愚か者は、いっこうに働こうとせず、
餓死寸前のところをさまよう。
しかし結局は、
むなしいの一語に尽きるような労働を続けるより、
のんびりその日暮らしをするほうがましだ。
7愚かしく思えることが、もう一つあります。 8息子も兄弟もいない一人暮らしの人が、さらに金持ちになろうと目の色を変えている場合です。この人は、だれに全財産を残そうというのでしょう。全く割の合わない、憂うつな話です。
9二人が手を組めば、一人の人の倍以上のことができます。結果から見れば、二人のほうがずっといいのです。 10二人なら片方が倒れても、もう一方が起こせます。ところが、一人のときに倒れてしまうと、だれにも起こしてもらえず、何とも惨めです。
11また、寒い夜、二人が一枚の毛布でもかぶって寝れば、お互いの体温で暖かくなります。しかし一人では、どうにも暖まることができません。 12一人では、攻撃を受けると負けてしまいます。しかし二人なら、背中合わせになって戦うことができ、相手に勝つことができます。三人なら、なおいいのです。三つ撚りの糸は、めったなことでは切れないからです。
地位を得ることはむなしい
13貧しくても賢い若者は、どんな忠告も受けつけない、年取った愚かな王よりましです。 14そのような若者は、牢獄から出て立身出世することでしょう。それどころか、生まれが卑しくても、王にさえなれるかもしれません。 15こんな若者なら、たとい王位を奪うことになっても、人々は喜んで協力するに違いありません。 16こうして彼は、幾百万もの人の指導者となり、非常に有名になるかもしれません。ところが次の世代の人は、彼を追放してしまいます。これもまたむなしいことで、風を追いかけるようなものです。
Oppression, Toil, Friendlessness
1Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun:
I saw the tears of the oppressed—
and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their oppressors—
and they have no comforter.
2And I declared that the dead,
who had already died,
are happier than the living,
who are still alive.
3But better than both
is the one who has never been born,
who has not seen the evil
that is done under the sun.
4And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
5Fools fold their hands
and ruin themselves.
6Better one handful with tranquillity
than two handfuls with toil
and chasing after the wind.
7Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:
8There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless—
a miserable business!
9Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Advancement Is Meaningless
13Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to heed a warning. 14The youth may have come from prison to the kingship, or he may have been born in poverty within his kingdom. 15I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed the youth, the king’s successor. 16There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
