すべてがむなしい
1ダビデ王の子で、エルサレムの王であり、「伝道者」と呼ばれたソロモンの教え。
2思うに、この世に価値のあるものなどない。
すべてがむなしい。
3-7人はあくせく働いた報酬として、
何を手に入れるというのか。
一つの時代が去り、新しい時代が来るが、
少しも変わらない。
太陽は昇っては沈み、また昇ろうと、
急ぎ元の所に帰って行く。
風は南に吹き、北に吹き、あちこち向きを変えるが、
結局行き着く所はない。
川は海に注ぐが、
海は決してあふれることはない。
水は再び川に戻り、また海に流れて行く。
8-11何もかも、くり返すばかりで、
あきあきする。
どれだけ見ていても満足できない。
どれだけ聞いても、
もうこれで良いということはない。
歴史はくり返すだけ。
ほんとうに新しいものなど何もない。
新しいように見えても、必ず前例があるか、すでに言い古されたものです。何か、「これは新しいものだ」と指摘できるものがあるでしょうか。それがずっと昔になかったと、どうしてわかるのですか。私たちは、先の時代にどんなことが起こったのか忘れてしまいます。そればかりか、のちの時代になれば、私たちが今していることを、だれも覚えていないのです。
知恵はむなしい
12-15伝道者である私はイスラエルの王で、エルサレムに住んでいました。私はこの世のあらゆることを理解しようと、全力を注ぎました。その結果、神が人間への分け前としてお与えになったものは、決して楽しいものでないことがわかりました。それはみな愚かに見え、風を追うようにむなしいものです。
間違ってしまったことは、もう正せない。
あったかもしれないものを考えてみたところで、
何の役に立とうか。
16-18私は自分に言い聞かせました。「私はこれまでのエルサレムのどの王より、いろんな勉強もした。どの王より知恵や知識を得た。」私は賢くなろうと、一生懸命に努力しました。しかし、今ではそんな努力さえ、風をつかまえるようにむなしいことだとわかったのです。
賢くなればなるほど、悲しみも増える。
知識を増すことは、悩みを増す。

9The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. 10Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us. 11There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.
