すばらしい奇跡
1これらの話を終えると、イエスはカペナウムの町に帰って行かれました。
2ちょうどそのころ、あるローマ軍の隊長が目をかけていた召使が、病気で死にかかっていました。 3イエスの評判を聞いた隊長は、日頃みんなに尊敬されているユダヤ人の長老たちをイエスのところにやり、召使のいのちを助けに来てくださいと願いました。 4長老たちは、この隊長がどんなにすばらしい人物かを説明し、熱心にイエスに頼みました。「あなたに助けていただく価値のある人がいるとしたら、この方こそふさわしい人です。 5ユダヤ人を愛し、会堂も建ててくれました。」 6-7そこで、イエスは長老たちといっしょに出かけました。家まであとわずかという時、隊長の友人たちが来て、彼のことづけを伝えました。「先生。わざわざおいでくださいませんように。とてもそんな名誉を受ける資格はございません。自分でお迎えに上がることさえ失礼と存じます。どうぞ今おられる所で、おことばをください。それで十分でございます。そうすれば、召使は必ず治ります。 8私は上官の権威の下にある者ですが、その私でさえ、部下には権威があります。私が『行け』と命じれば行きますし、『来い』と言えば来ます。また奴隷にも、『あれをやれ』『これをやれ』と言えば、そのとおりにするのです。」 9これを聞くと、イエスはたいへん驚き、群衆のほうをふり向いて言われました。「皆さん。これほどの信仰を持った人は、イスラエル中でも見たことがありません。」 10使いの者たちが戻ってみると、召使はすっかり治っていました。
11それからまもなく、イエスは弟子たちといっしょにナインの町へ行かれました。いつものように、あとから大ぜいの人の群れがついて行きます。 12町の門の近くで、葬式の列にばったり出会いました。死んだのは、夫に先立たれた女の一人息子でした。町の人が大ぜい母親に付き添っています。 13痛々しい母親の姿を見てかわいそうに思ったイエスは、「泣かなくてもいいのですよ」と、やさしく声をおかけになりました。 14そして歩み寄り、棺に手をかけると、かついでいた人たちが立ち止まったので、「少年よ、起きなさい」と言われました。 15すると少年はすぐに起き上がり、回りの人たちに話しかけるではありませんか。イエスは少年を母親に返しました。 16人々はびっくりし、ことばも出ませんでしたが、次の瞬間、あちこちから神を賛美する声がわき上がりました。「大預言者だ！」「神様のお働きだ！ この目で見たぞ！」 17この日の出来事は、あっという間にユダヤ全土と回りの地方一帯に広まりました。
イエスとヨハネ
18イエスのこうしたわざの数々は、バプテスマのヨハネの弟子たちの耳にも入り、細大もらさずヨハネに報告されました。 19-20ヨハネは、弟子を二人イエスのもとへやり、こう尋ねさせました。「あなたは、ほんとうに私たちの待ち続けてきたお方ですか。それとも、まだ別の方をお待ちしなければならないのでしょうか。」 21ちょうどその時、イエスはさまざまな病気にかかった大ぜいの病人を治し、盲人を見えるようにし、悪霊を追い出しておられるところでした。 22イエスの答えはこうでした。「帰って、ヨハネに、今ここで見聞きしたことを話しなさい。盲人が見えるようになり、立てなかった人が今は自分で歩けるようになり、ツァラアトの人が治り、耳の聞こえなかった人が聞こえるようになり、死人が生き返り、貧しい人々が福音（神の救いの知らせ）を聞いていることなどを。 23それから、わたしを疑わない人は幸いです、と伝えなさい。」
24ヨハネの弟子たちが帰ってから、イエスは人々に、ヨハネのことを話し始められました。「あなたがたは、ヨハネに会いに荒野へ出かけた時、どんな人物だと考えていましたか。風にそよぐ葦のような人だとでも思ったのですか。 25それとも、きらびやかに着飾った人に会えるとでも……。ぜいたくな暮らしをしている人なら宮殿にいます。荒野にはいません。 26あるいは、預言者に会えると期待したのですか。そのとおり、ヨハネは預言者以上の者です。 27彼こそ聖書の中で、『見よ。わたしはあなたより先に使者を送る。その使者は人々に、あなたを迎える準備をさせる』（マラキ3・1）と言われている、その人です。 28今まで生まれた人の中で、ヨハネほどすぐれた働きをした人はいません。けれども、神の国で一番小さい者でも、ヨハネよりはずっと偉大なのです。 29ヨハネの教えを聞いた人はみな、取税人たちでさえ、神の正しさを認め、バプテスマ（洗礼）を受けました。 30ただ、パリサイ人と律法の専門家だけが受け入れなかったのです。彼らはあつかましくも、神のご計画を退け、ヨハネのバプテスマを拒否したのです。 31このような人々のことを、どう言ったらいいでしょう。 32まるで遊び友達に文句を言っている子どものようです。『結婚式ごっこをしようって言ったのに、ちっともうれしがってくれないし、それで葬式ごっこにしたら、今度はぜんぜん悲しがってくれない』と嘆くのです。 33つまり、バプテスマのヨハネが何度も断食し、生涯、酒も飲まずにいると、『彼は気が変になっている』と言い、 34わたしが食事をしたり、ぶどう酒を飲んだりすると、『あいつは大食いで大酒飲み、一番たちの悪い罪人どもの仲間だ』とののしります。 35けれども、神の知恵の正しさは、神を信じる者たちが証明するのです。」
罪を赦された女
36あるパリサイ人から食事に招待されたので、イエスはその家に入りました。一同が食卓に着いていると、 37町の女が一人、高価な香油の入った美しいつぼを持ってやって来ました。この女は不道徳な生活をしていました。 38女は部屋に入るなり、イエスのうしろにひざまずき、さめざめと泣きました。あまり泣いたので、イエスの足が涙でぬれるほどでした。女はていねいに自分の髪でイエスの足の涙をぬぐい、心を込めて足に口づけしてから、その上に香油を注ぎかけました。 39イエスを招待したパリサイ人はこの出来事を見て、「これで、やつが預言者でないことがはっきりした。もしほんとうに神から遣わされた者なら、この女の正体がわかるはずだから」とひそかに思いました。
40ところが、イエスはすべてを見通しておられました。「シモンよ。あなたに言っておきたいことがあります。」「はい、先生。何でしょう。」 41「ある男が二人の人に金を貸しました。一人は五百デナリ（一デナリは一日の賃金）、もう一人は五十デナリ借りました。 42ところが二人とも、どうしても借金を返せません。金を貸した男はたいへん思いやりのある人だったので、二人の借金を帳消しにしてやりました。この二人のうちどちらの人がよけいに貸し主に感謝し、彼を愛したでしょうか。」 43「たくさん借りていたほうでしょう。」シモンの答えに、イエスも、「そのとおりです」とうなずかれました。 44それから、ひざまずいている女のほうをふり向き、シモンに言われました。「ほら、この女を見なさい。わたしがこの家に来た時、あなたは足を洗う水さえ出してくれませんでした。ところがこの女は、涙でわたしの足を洗い、髪でふいてくれました。 45あなたはあいさつの口づけをしてくれませんでしたが、この女はわたしが入って来た時から、何度も足に口づけしてくれました。 46あなたはわたしの頭にオリーブ油を注いでくれましたか。この女は、わたしの足にこんなに高価な香油を注いでくれたのです。 47この女の多くの罪が赦されたからです。そして、わたしを多く愛してくれたからです。少ししか赦されていない者は、少ししか愛さないのです。」
48そして女に言われました。「あなたの罪は赦されています。」 49その場に同席していた人たちは、心の中でつぶやき始めました。「罪を赦すなんて、いったい自分をだれだと思っているのだろう。」 50しかし、イエスは女に、「あなたの信仰があなたを救ったのです。安心してお帰りなさい」と言われました。
The faith of the centurion
1When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. 2There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was ill and about to die. 3The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, ‘This man deserves to have you do this, 5because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.’ 6So Jesus went with them.
He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: ‘Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, “Go”, and he goes; and that one, “Come”, and he comes. I say to my servant, “Do this”, and he does it.’
9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, ‘I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.’ 10Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
Jesus raises a widow’s son
11Soon afterwards, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out – the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, ‘Don’t cry.’
14Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, ‘Young man, I say to you, get up!’ 15The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16They were all filled with awe and praised God. ‘A great prophet has appeared among us,’ they said. ‘God has come to help his people.’ 17This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.
Jesus and John the Baptist
18John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19he sent them to the Lord to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’
20When the men came to Jesus, they said, ‘John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” ’
21At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, illnesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22So he replied to the messengers, ‘Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy7:22 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 23Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.’
24After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27This is the one about whom it is written:
‘ “I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.”7:27 Mal. 3:1
28I tell you, among those born of women there is no-one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.’
29(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptised by John. 30But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptised by John.)
31Jesus went on to say, ‘To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32They are like children sitting in the market-place and calling out to each other:
‘ “We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not cry.”
33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, “He has a demon.” 34The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, “Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” 35But wisdom is proved right by all her children.’
Jesus anointed by a sinful woman
36When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, ‘If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is – that she is a sinner.’
40Jesus answered him, ‘Simon, I have something to tell you.’
‘Tell me, teacher,’ he said.
41‘Two people owed money to a certain money-lender. One owed him five hundred denarii,7:41 A denarius was the usual daily wage of a day labourer (see Matt. 20:2). and the other fifty. 42Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?’
43Simon replied, ‘I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.’
‘You have judged correctly,’ Jesus said.
44Then he turned towards the woman and said to Simon, ‘Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven – as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.’
48Then Jesus said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’
49The other guests began to say among themselves, ‘Who is this who even forgives sins?’
50Jesus said to the woman, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’
