安息日の主であるイエス
1ある安息日（神の定めた休息日）のことです。イエスと弟子たちは麦畑の中を歩いていました。弟子たちは歩きながら、麦の穂を摘んでは、手でもみ、殻を取って食べました。 2パリサイ人たちが目ざとくそれを見つけ、非難しました。「どう見ても律法違反だ！ 弟子たちのやっていることは、明らかに刈り入れではないか。安息日の労働はユダヤのおきてで禁じられているというのに。」 3イエスは、お答えになりました。「聖書を読んだことがないのですか。ダビデ王とその家来たちが空腹になった時、どうしたでしょうか。 4ダビデ王は神殿に入り、主に供えられた特別なパンを取って食べたではありませんか。これはおきてに反することでしたが、自分ばかりか、家来たちにも分けてやりました。」 5また、こうも言われました。「わたしは安息日の主です。」
6今度は別の安息日のことです。イエスは会堂で教えておられました。ちょうどそこに、右手の不自由な男が居合わせました。 7安息日だというので、律法の専門家やパリサイ人たちは、イエスがこの男を治すかどうか、様子をうかがっていました。何とかしてイエスを訴える口実を見つけようと必死だったのです。 8彼らの魂胆を見抜いたイエスは、その男に、「さあ、みんなの真ん中に立ちなさい」とお命じになりました。男が言われたとおりにすると、 9イエスはパリサイ人たちに、「ひとつ聞きたいのですが、安息日に良いことをするのと悪いことをするのと、どちらが正しいでしょうか。人のいのちを救うのと、いのちを奪うのと、どちらが正しいでしょうか」とお尋ねになりました。 10それから、会衆をぐるりと見回し、男に、「さあ、手を伸ばしなさい」と言われました。男がそのとおりにすると、なんと彼の右手はすっかり治っていました。 11これを見たパリサイ人たちはすっかり逆上し、イエスを殺そうとたくらみ始めました。
十二使徒を選ぶ
12それからまもなく、イエスは山へ行き、夜通し祈られました。 13夜明けごろ、弟子たちを呼び寄せると、その中から十二人を選び、「使徒」という名をおつけになりました。 14-16十二人の名前は次のとおりです。シモン〔イエスはペテロともお呼びになった〕、アンデレ〔シモンの兄弟〕、ヤコブ、ヨハネ、ピリポ、バルトロマイ、マタイ、トマス、ヤコブ〔アルパヨの息子〕、シモン〔「熱心党」というユダヤ教の急進派グループのメンバー〕、ユダ〔タダイとも呼ばれた〕、イスカリオテのユダ〔後にイエスを裏切った男〕。
17-18イエスは弟子たちといっしょに山を降り、広々とした所にお立ちになりました。すると、ほかの大ぜいの弟子と群衆が集まって来て、たちまちイエスの回りは人の波で埋めつくされました。ユダヤ全地、エルサレム、はるか北のツロやシドンの海岸地方などから、イエスの話を聞き、また病気を治してもらおうと、はるばるやって来た人ばかりです。ここでは、悪霊に苦しめられている人もいやされました。 19だれもがみな、イエスにさわろうと押し合いへし合いの大騒ぎです。さわれば、病気を治す力がイエスから出て、どんな病気もいやされたからです。
20それからイエスは、弟子たちのほうをふり向き、話し始められました。「あなたがた貧しい人は幸福です。神の国はあなたがたのものだからです。 21いま空腹な人は幸福です。やがて十分満足するようになるからです。泣いている人は幸福です。もうすぐ笑うようになるからです。 22わたしの弟子だというので、憎まれたり、追い出されたり、悪口を言われたりするなら、なんと幸いなことでしょう。 23そんなことになったら、心から喜びなさい。躍り上がって喜びなさい。やがて天国で、目をみはるばかりの報いがいただけるからです。そして、同じような扱いを受けた、昔の預言者たちの仲間入りができるのです。
24これとは反対に、金持ちたちを待ち受けているのは悲しみだけです。彼らの幸福はこの地上限りのものだからです。 25肥え太り、今は栄えていても、やがて飢え渇く日が来れば、彼らの笑いは一瞬にして悲しみに変わるでしょう。 26ほめそやされる者はあわれです。偽預言者はいつの時代でも、そのような扱いを受けたからです。
27いいですか、よく聞きなさい。あなたの敵を愛しなさい。あなたを憎む者によくしてあげなさい。 28あなたをのろう者を祝福しなさい。あなたを侮辱する者に神の祝福を祈り求めなさい。 29もしだれかが頬をなぐったら、もう一方の頬もなぐらせなさい。また、もしだれかが上着を取ろうとしたら、下着もつけてやりなさい。 30持ち物は何でも、ほしがる人にあげなさい。盗難にあっても、取り返そうと気をもんではいけません。
31また、人からしてほしいと思うことを、そのとおり人にもしてあげなさい。 32自分を愛してくれる人だけを愛したところで、ほめられたことでも何でもありません。神を知らない人でさえ、それぐらいのことはします。 33よくしてくれる人にだけよくしたところで、何の意味があるのでしょう。罪人でさえ、それぐらいのことはします。 34返してもらえる人にだけお金を貸したところで、善行と言えるでしょうか。全額戻るとわかっていれば、どんな悪党でも仲間にお金を貸してやります。
35自分の敵を愛しなさい。彼らによくしてやり、返してもらうことなど当てにせずに貸してあげなさい。そうすれば、天からすばらしい報いがあり、あなたがたは神の子どもになれるのです。神は、恩知らずの者や極悪人にも、あわれみ深い方だからです。 36あなたがたも、天の父のように、あわれみ深い者になりなさい。 37人のあら捜しをしたり、悪口を言ったりしてはいけません。自分もそうされないためです。人には広い心で接しなさい。そうすれば、彼らも同じようにしてくれるでしょう。 38与えなさい。そうすれば与えられます。彼らは、量りのますに、押し込んだり、揺すり入れたりしてたっぷり量り、あふれるばかりにして返してくれます。自分が量るそのはかりで、自分も量り返されるのです。」
39イエスはさらに、もう一つのたとえを話されました。「盲人が盲人の道案内をしたら、どうなるでしょう。一人が穴に落ち込めば、もう一人も巻き添えになるでしょう。 40弟子が師より偉くなれますか。しかし、一生懸命努力すれば、自分の師と同じぐらいにはなれます。
41また、自分の目に大きなごみが入っているのに、どうしてほかの人の目の中にある、小さなちりを気にするのでしょう。 42自分の目の大きなごみで、よく見えもしないのに、どうして、『あなたの目にごみが入ってるから、取ってあげよう』などと言うのでしょう。偽善者よ。まず自分の目のごみを取り除きなさい。そうすれば、はっきり見えるようになって、ほかの人の小さなごみを取ってあげることもできるのです。
43おいしい実をつける木が、まずい実をつけるはずはないし、まずい実をつける木が、おいしい実をつけるはずもありません。 44つまり、木は実によって見分けることができるのです。いばらにいちじくの実はならないし、野ばらにぶどうの実はなりません。 45良い人は、良い心から良い行いを生み出します。悪い人は、隠された悪い心から悪い行いを生み出します。心に秘めたことが、ことばになってあふれ出るからです。
46なぜ、『主よ、主よ』と呼びながら、わたしに従おうとはしないのですか。 47そばに来て、わたしの教えを聞き、そのとおり実行する人はみな、 48地面を深く掘って、岩の上に土台をすえ、その上に家を建てる人のようです。洪水になり、激流に洗われても、家はびくともしません。土台がしっかりしているからです。 49しかし、わたしのことばを聞いても実行しない人は、ちょうど、土台なしで家を建てる人のようです。水が押し寄せると、家はあとかたもなく流されてしまいます。」
Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath
1One Sabbath Jesus was going through the cornfields, and his disciples began to pick some ears of corn, rub them in their hands and eat the grain. 2Some of the Pharisees asked, ‘Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?’
3Jesus answered them, ‘Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.’ 5Then Jesus said to them, ‘The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.’
6On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shrivelled. 7The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 8But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shrivelled hand, ‘Get up and stand in front of everyone.’ So he got up and stood there.
9Then Jesus said to them, ‘I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?’
10He looked round at them all, and then said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
The twelve apostles
12One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. 13When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:
14Simon (whom he named Peter) and his brother Andrew,
James,
John,
Philip,
Bartholomew,
15Matthew,
Thomas,
James son of Alphaeus,
Simon who was called the Zealot,
16Judas son of James,
and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Blessings and woes
17He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, 18who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.
20Looking at his disciples, he said:
‘Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
21Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
22Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they exclude you and insult you
and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man.
23‘Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.
24‘But woe to you who are rich,
for you have already received your comfort.
25Woe to you who are well fed now,
for you will go hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.
26Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.
Love for enemies
27‘But to you who are listening I say: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who ill-treat you. 29If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31Do to others as you would have them do to you.
32‘If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Judging others
37‘Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.’
39He also told them this parable: ‘Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.
41‘Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,” when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
A tree and its fruit
43‘No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44Each tree is recognised by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thorn-bushes, or grapes from briers. 45A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
The wise and foolish builders
46‘Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord,” and do not do what I say? 47As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When the flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.’
