1ある日、イエスが宮の中で人々を教え、福音を宣べ伝えておられると、祭司長や他の宗教的指導者たちが、イエスと対決しようとやって来ました。 2彼らは、何の権威で商人たちを宮から追い出したのか、とイエスに詰め寄りました。 3イエスはお答えになりました。「答える前に、まず、わたしから質問します。 4バプテスマのヨハネは神に遣わされて来たのですか。それとも、ただ自分の考えを主張しただけですか。」 5彼らは集まって、ひそひそ相談しました。「ヨハネの語ったことが神からの教えだと答えたら、なぜ信じなかったのかと言われるだろう。 6かといって、神からでないと答えるわけにもいくまい。そんなことをしたら、今度は群衆が襲いかかって来るだろう。みな、ヨハネを預言者だと信じ込んでいるから。」 7そこで彼らは、「わかりません」と答えました。 8イエスは、「そうですか。では、わたしも答えません」とおっしゃいました。
9それから、イエスはまた人々のほうを向き、次のようなたとえを話されました。「ある人がぶどう園を造り、それを数人の農夫に貸して外国へ行き、長いことそこに住んでいました。 10やがて、収穫の季節になりました。主人は代理の者をやり、自分の分を受け取ろうとしました。ところが、農夫たちはどうしたでしょう。代理人を袋だたきにし、手ぶらで追い返したのです。 11また別の代理人を送りましたが、彼もまた袋だたきにされ、さんざん侮辱されたあげく、手ぶらで追い返されました。 12三人目の代理人も同じで、傷を負わされ、やっとの思いで逃げ帰りました。 13考えあぐねた主人は、一人つぶやきました。『いったい、どうしたものか。そうだ、かわいい息子をやろう。息子なら、きっと農夫たちも一目おくに違いない。』 14ところが、当の農夫たちは、主人の息子が来るのを見て、『おい、絶好のチャンスだぞ。あれは跡取り息子だ。さあ、あいつを殺そう。そうすれば、ぶどう園はおれたちのものだ』とささやき合いました。 15そのことばどおり、農夫たちは息子をぶどう園の外に引きずり出し、殺してしまいました。さて、主人はどうするでしょう。 16今度は自分で乗り込み、悪い農夫たちを皆殺しにし、ぶどう園はほかの人たちに貸すに決まっています。」この話を聞いていた人たちは、「そんな恐ろしいことがあるなんて、とても考えられません」と答えました。 17しかしイエスは、人々の顔を見回しながら、おっしゃいました。「では、聖書に、
『建築士たちの捨てた石が、
最も重要な土台石となった』（詩篇118・22）
と書いてあるのは、どういう意味ですか。」 18さらにことばを続け、「この石につまずく者はみな、打ち砕かれます。反対に、この石が落ちてくれば、だれもかれも粉みじんになります」と言われました。
19祭司長や宗教的指導者たちは、この話を聞いて、その悪い農夫が自分たちを指していることに気づき、すぐにもイエスを捕らえたいと思いました。しかし群衆の暴動がこわくて、どうにもできません。 20そこで、ローマ総督に逮捕の理由として報告できるようなことを、何とかしてイエスに言わせようとしました。こうして機会をねらっていた彼らは、良い人物を装った回し者をイエスのもとに送り、 21こう質問させました。「先生。私どもは、あなたがどんなに正しい教師かよく承知しております。あなたはいつも真理を語り、分け隔てなく、神の道を教えておられます。 22それで、ぜひお教えいただきたいのですが、ローマ政府に税金を納めるのは正しいことでしょうか。それとも正しくないことでしょうか。」 23彼らの計略は見えすいていました。イエスは言われました。 24「銀貨を見せなさい。ここに刻まれているのは、だれの肖像、だれの名前ですか。」「カイザル（ローマ皇帝）のです。」 25「それなら、皇帝のものは、皇帝に返せばいいでしょう。しかし、神のものはみな、神に返さなければなりません。」 26公衆の面前でイエスのことばじりをとらえようとするたくらみは、みごと失敗に終わりました。彼らはイエスの答えに恐れ入り、返すことばもありませんでした。
27次にやって来たのは、人は死んでしまえばそれまでで、復活などありえないと主張していたサドカイ人（神殿を支配していた祭司階級。ユダヤ教の主流派）たちでした。 28「モーセの律法には、もしある人が子どものないまま死んだら、その弟は残された未亡人と結婚しなければならず、二人の間にできた子どもは、法律的には死んだ者の子として家を継ぐ、と書いてあります。 29ところで、七人兄弟がいたとします。長男は結婚しましたが、子どもがないまま死んだので、 30次男がその未亡人と結婚しました。ところが、彼も子どもができずに死にました。 31こうして、兄弟が次々にこの未亡人と結婚したのですが、七人とも子どもがないまま死にました。 32最後に、未亡人も死にました。 33そこでお尋ねしたいのですが、この女は復活の時、いったいだれの妻になるのでしょう。兄弟みなが彼女と結婚したのですが。」 34-35イエスは言われました。「結婚とは、この地上に住む人たちのものです。死から復活したのちに、天国へ行く資格があると認められた人たちは、結婚などしません。 36二度と死ぬこともありません。この点では、天使と変わりなく、また、死人の中から新しいいのちへと復活したのですから、神の子どもなのです。 37-38しかし、あなたがたがほんとうに聞きたいのは、復活があるかないかということでしょう。モーセ自身は何と書き残していますか。燃えさかる柴の中に現れた神とお会いした時、モーセは神を、『アブラハムの神、イサクの神、ヤコブの神』（出エジプト３・６）と呼びました。主を彼らの神と呼んでいる以上、彼らは生きているはずです。神は死んだ者の神ではありません。神に対して、みなが生きているのです。」 39その場にいた律法の専門家たちは、「先生。非の打ちどころのないお答えです」と言い、 40それ以上、尋ねようとはしませんでした。
41すると今度は、イエスが質問なさいました。「あなたがたはどうして、キリストをダビデの子だと言うのですか。 42-43ダビデ自身が、聖書の詩篇の中でこう歌っています。
『神が私の主に言われた。
「わたしがあなたの敵を
あなたの足の下に置くまで、
わたしの右に座っていなさい。」』（詩篇110・１）
44キリストはダビデの子であると同時に、ダビデの主なのです。」
45人々がイエスのことばに耳を傾けていると、イエスは弟子たちに言われました。 46「ユダヤ教の学者たちを警戒しなさい。彼らはぜいたくな着物を着て歩き回り、通りで人々からていねいなあいさつを受けるのが何より好きです。また会堂や宴会で、上座に着くのも大好きです。 47うわべは、さも信心深そうに、長々と祈りますが、実際は、未亡人をだまして財産をかすめ奪おうとしています。こういう人々には、神から最もきびしい罰が下るのです。」
The authority of Jesus questioned
1One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. 2‘Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,’ they said. ‘Who gave you this authority?’
3He replied, ‘I will also ask you a question. Tell me: 4John’s baptism – was it from heaven, or of human origin?’
5They discussed it among themselves and said, ‘If we say, “From heaven,” he will ask, “Why didn’t you believe him?” 6But if we say, “Of human origin,” all the people will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.’
7So they answered, ‘We don’t know where it was from.’
8Jesus said, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.’
The parable of the tenants
9He went on to tell the people this parable: ‘A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time. 10At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. 12He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.
13‘Then the owner of the vineyard said, “What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.”
14‘But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. “This is the heir,” they said. “Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.” 15So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
‘What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.’
When the people heard this, they said, ‘God forbid!’
17Jesus looked directly at them and asked, ‘Then what is the meaning of that which is written:
‘ “The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone”20:17 Psalm 118:22?
18Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.’
19The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.
Paying taxes to Caesar
20Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said, so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor. 21So the spies questioned him: ‘Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. 22Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’
23He saw through their duplicity and said to them, 24‘Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?’
‘Caesar’s,’ they replied.
25He said to them, ‘Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.’
26They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.
The resurrection and marriage
27Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question. 28‘Teacher,’ they said, ‘Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 29Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30The second 31and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32Finally, the woman died too. 33Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?’
34Jesus replied, ‘The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. 37But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord “the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”.20:37 Exodus 3:6 38He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.’
39Some of the teachers of the law responded, ‘Well said, teacher!’ 40And no-one dared to ask him any more questions.
Whose son is the Messiah?
41Then Jesus said to them, ‘Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David? 42David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:
‘ “The Lord said to my Lord:
‘Sit at my right hand
43until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.’ ”20:43 Psalm 110:1
44David calls him “Lord.” How then can he be his son?’
Warning against the teachers of the law
45While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46‘Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the market-places and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at banquets. 47They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.’
