水をぶどう酒に変える
1それから三日目に、ガリラヤのカナという村で結婚式があり、イエスの母マリヤが客として出席していました。 2イエスと弟子たちも招待されていました。 3ところが、祝宴の最中だというのに、ぶどう酒が切れてしまったのです。マリヤは、そのことをイエスに知らせました。 4イエスは、「今はかかわりがないことです、お母さん。まだ、その時ではありません」と、お答えになりました。 5マリヤは手伝いの者たちに、「この人の言うとおりにしてください」と言いました。 6さて、そこには石の水がめが六つありました。ユダヤ教の儀式に使う水がめで、それぞれ八十リットルから百二十リットルぐらい入るものです。 7イエスは手伝いの者たちに、「さあ、縁までいっぱい水を入れなさい」と指示なさいました。彼らがそのとおりにすると、 8「では、それを汲んで、婚宴の世話役のところへ持って行きなさい」と言われます。彼らは言われるままに持って行きました。 9宴会の世話役が試しに一口味わってみると、おいしいぶどう酒です。「こんな上等の酒を、いったいどこから出してきたんだろう」と首をかしげました。もちろん手伝いの者たちは何もかも知っていました。そこで、世話役は花婿を呼び出して、 10言いました。「これは極上のぶどう酒じゃないですか。あなたはすばらしい方だ。たいていどこの家でも初めに良いぶどう酒を出し、酔いがまわって味がわからなくなると、安物でごまかすものです。ところがあなたは、一番上等なものを、最後まで取っておかれたのですから。」 11このガリラヤのカナでの奇跡は、イエスが神の力を公に示された最初のものでした。これを見て弟子たちは、イエスを正真正銘のメシヤと信じたのです。
12その結婚式のあと、イエスは、母や兄弟、弟子たちといっしょにカペナウムへ行き、数日間、滞在されました。
エルサレム神殿をきよめる
13ユダヤ人の過越の祭り（パン種を入れないパンを食べる、年に一度のユダヤ人の祭り）が近づき、イエスはエルサレムへ行かれました。 14宮の境内には、供え物用の牛や羊、鳩を売る商人たちと、座って両替をしている人たちがいました。 15それを見て、イエスはなわでむちを作り、商売人たちをみな追い出し、鳩や羊や牛を追い散らし始めました。次々に両替人の台をひっくり返したので、お金があたり一面に散らばりました。 16イエスは鳩を売る者たちに、「それを持って出て行きなさい。父の家を金もうけの場所にしてはいけません」と言われました。 17そのとき弟子たちは、「神の家を思う熱心が、わたしを焼き尽くす」（詩篇69・9）という、聖書の預言を思い出したのです。
18おさまらないユダヤ人の指導者たちは、かんかんになって言いました。「いったい何の権利があってこの人たちを追い出すのか。そんな権威を神から与えられているのだったら、その証拠に奇跡を見せてもらおう。」 19イエスはお答えになりました。「わかりました。この神殿をこわしなさい。三日で建て直してみせましょう。」 20「なんということを！ この神殿は建てるのに四十六年もかかったのだ。それを三日で建てると言うのか。」ユダヤ人たちはあきれ返りました。 21しかし、イエスが「この神殿」と言われたのは、ご自分の体のことだったのです。 22イエスが復活されたあとで、弟子たちはこの時のことを思い出しました。そして、イエスがご自分のことを聖書のことばを引用して話されたのであり、そのとおりになったことを知ったのです。
23過越の祭りの時、イエスがエルサレムで奇跡を行われたので、多くの人が、「この方は確かにメシヤだ」と信じるようになりました。 24-25しかしイエスは、そういう人々を信用されたわけではありません。人間がどれほど変わりやすいものかを知り尽くしておられたからです。
Jesus changes water into wine
1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, ‘They have no more wine.’
4‘Woman,2:4 The Greek for Woman does not denote any disrespect. why do you involve me?’ Jesus replied. ‘My hour has not yet come.’
5His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’
6Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from eighty to a hundred and twenty litres.
7Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’; so they filled them to the brim.
8Then he told them, ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.’
They did so, 9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realise where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10and said, ‘Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.’
11What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
12After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
Jesus clears the temple courts
13When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16To those who sold doves he said, ‘Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!’ 17His disciples remembered that it is written: ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’2:17 Psalm 69:9
18The Jews then responded to him, ‘What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?’
19Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.’
20They replied, ‘It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?’ 21But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.
23Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name.2:23 Or in him 24But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.
