逮捕されるイエス
1話し終えると、イエスは弟子たちといっしょに出かけ、ケデロンの谷を横切り、とあるオリーブ園に入って行かれました。 2イエスは弟子たちといっしょによくここに来ておられ、イエスを裏切ろうとしていたユダにとってもなじみのある場所でした。イエスと弟子たちはそこでたびたび会合したからです。 3祭司長とパリサイ人たちは、ユダに、一隊の兵士と神殿警備の役人たちをつけて園に差し向けました。手に手にあかあかと燃えるたいまつやランプをかざし、武器を持った一隊が、オリーブ園に押しかけました。
4-5イエスはご自分の身に起こることをすべてご存じだったので、前に進み出て人々を迎えました。裏切り者のユダもいっしょでした。「だれを捜しているのですか。」「ナザレのイエス！」「わたしがイエスです。」 6このイエスのことばに、人々はみな息をのんであとずさりし、ばたばたと倒れました。 7イエスはもう一度お尋ねになりました。「だれを捜しているのですか。」「ナザレのイエスを。」 8「わたしがそうだと言ったではありませんか。目当てがこのわたしなら、ほかの者は関係ありません。このまま帰らせてあげなさい。」 9それは、「わたしに下さった人たちを、ただの一人も失いませんでした」とイエスが言われたとおりになるためでした。 10その時、シモン・ペテロは剣を抜き放ち、大祭司の部下、マルコスの右の耳を切り落としました。 11しかし、イエスはペテロをたしなめて、「剣をさやに納めなさい。父が下さった杯は飲まなければならないのです」と言われました。
12これを聞くと、ユダヤ人の役人たちは、大隊長や兵士たちといっしょにイエスに襲いかかり、縛り上げました。 13彼らがまずイエスを引いて行ったのは、その年の大祭司カヤパのしゅうとアンナスのところでした。 14カヤパは以前、ユダヤ人の指導者たちに、「一人の人が全国民の代わりに死ぬほうが得策だ」と助言した人物です。
15シモン・ペテロは、もう一人の弟子（筆者の使徒ヨハネ）といっしょに、恐る恐るイエスについて行きました。その弟子は大祭司の知り合いだったので、イエスといっしょに中庭に入ることができました。 16ペテロはじりじりしながら門の外に立っていましたが、あの弟子が来て、門番の女に頼み込んだので、入れてもらえることになりました。 17ところが、女はまじまじとペテロを見やり、「ねえ、ちょっと、あなた、イエスの弟子じゃない？」と聞くのです。「とんでもない、何を言うんだ。」そう言って、その場はなんとか切り抜けました。 18寒い日だったので、役人や召使たちは炭火をかこんで暖まっています。ペテロは何くわぬ顔で、いっしょに立って暖まっていました。
19中ではいよいよ、大祭司がイエスに、弟子たちのことや教えの内容などについて尋問を始めたところです。 20イエスはお答えになりました。「わたしの教えはわかっているでしょう。いつも会堂や宮で語っていたので、ユダヤ人の指導者の皆さんも聞いておられたはずです。それ以外に、隠れて別のことを教えたことはありません。 21どうしてそんな質問をするのですか。そのようなことは、わたしの話を聞いた人たちに尋ねればすむのに。ここにも何人かいるでしょう。わたしが何を言ったか、その人たちが一番よく知っています。」 22「無礼者！それが大祭司様に対する口のきき方か。」そばに立っていた役人の一人がどなりつけ、平手でイエスをたたきました。 23イエスはお答えになりました。「何かまちがったことでも言いましたか。だったら証拠を見せてください。なぜ、正しいことを言う者を打つのですか。」 24こうしたやりとりのあと、アンナスは、イエスを縛ったまま、大祭司カヤパのところに回しました。
25一方、シモン・ペテロはどうしたでしょう。火のそばで暖まっていると、またしても人々が、「あんた、あの人の弟子じゃないのか？」と問い詰めました。「弟子だって？ 冗談じゃない。」 26こう答えたものの、まずいことに、ペテロが耳を切り落とした、あの大祭司の部下の親類にあたる者が居合わせたのです。「しらばっくれてもだめだ。あのオリーブ園で、確かにイエスといっしょだったぞ。」 27こうまで言われても、ペテロはあくまでしらを切りました。とその時、鶏の鳴く声が聞こえました。
裁判を受けるイエス
28カヤパの取り調べはその朝早く終わり、今度はローマ総督（ユダヤを統治する行政長官）の番です。訴える人々は、イエスを総督官邸まで連れて行きましたが、中に入ろうとしません。ユダヤ教のおきてでは、異教徒の家に入ることはたいへん汚らわしいことだったのです。そんなことをしたら身が汚れて、過越の食事が食べられなくなるからです。 29それで、総督ピラトがわざわざ外に出て来て問いただしました。「何を告発しに来たのか。いったいこの男はどんな悪事を働いたのだ。」 30「やつが犯罪人でないなら、逮捕したりはいたしません！」彼らも負けずにやり返します。 31「そうか。だったらおまえたちの法律に従って、おまえたちが裁判したらよかろう。」「お忘れですか。私どもにはこの男を死刑にする権利はないのです。だから、ぜひとも閣下のご承認をいただきたいのです。」 32こうして、ご自分がどのような方法で処刑されるか、イエスが前もって話しておられたことが現実となったのです。
33ピラトは官邸内に戻ると、イエスを呼び寄せて尋ねました。「おまえはユダヤ人の王か。どうなのだ。」 34「あなたの言う王とは、普通の意味での王ですか。それとも、ユダヤ人の言う王でしょうか。」 35ピラトはかんに触ったのか、強い口調で言いました。「私がユダヤ人だとでも言うつもりか。おまえをここに引っ立てて来たのは、ユダヤ人と祭司長たちだろう。いったい何をしでかしたのか。」 36「わたしは地上の王ではありません。もし地上の王であったら、逮捕された時、弟子たちは戦いをいどんだでしょう。わたしの国はこの世のものではないのです。」 37「なんだと、それじゃあ、やっぱりおまえは王なんだな！」「いかにもそのとおりです。わたしは、この世に真理を伝えるために生まれたのです。真理を愛する者はみな、わたしに従うのです。」 38「真理だと？ 真理とは何だ。」ピラトは吐き捨てるように言うと、またユダヤ人たちのところへ行き、こう提案しました。「あの男は無罪だ。 39ところで毎年、過越の祭りの時には、囚人を一人釈放してやることになっている。おまえたちさえよければ、あの『ユダヤ人の王』を釈放してやるが、どうだ。」 40「違う！ あいつじゃない！ バラバだ！」彼らはまた大声でわめき立てました。このバラバという男は強盗だったのです。
Jesus arrested
1When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.
2Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. 3So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’
5‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied.
‘I am he,’ Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6When Jesus said, ‘I am he,’ they drew back and fell to the ground.
7Again he asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’
‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they said.
8Jesus answered, ‘I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.’ 9This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: ‘I have not lost one of those you gave me.’18:9 John 6:39
10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11Jesus commanded Peter, ‘Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?’
12Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him 13and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.
Peter’s first denial
15Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard, 16but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant-girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17‘You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?’ she asked Peter.
He replied, ‘I am not.’
18It was cold, and the servants and officials stood round a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
The high priest questions Jesus
19Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20‘I have spoken openly to the world,’ Jesus replied. ‘I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. 21Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.’
22When Jesus said this, one of the officials near by slapped him in the face. ‘Is this the way you answer the high priest?’ he demanded.
23‘If I said something wrong,’ Jesus replied, ‘testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?’ 24Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter’s second and third denials
25Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, ‘You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?’
He denied it, saying, ‘I am not.’
26One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, ‘Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?’ 27Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a cock began to crow.
Jesus before Pilate
28Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. 29So Pilate came out to them and asked, ‘What charges are you bringing against this man?’
30‘If he were not a criminal,’ they replied, ‘we would not have handed him over to you.’
31Pilate said, ‘Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.’
‘But we have no right to execute anyone,’ they objected. 32This took place to fulfil what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.
33Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’
34‘Is that your own idea,’ Jesus asked, ‘or did others talk to you about me?’
35‘Am I a Jew?’ Pilate replied. ‘Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?’
36Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.’
37‘You are a king, then!’ said Pilate.
Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.’
38‘What is truth?’ retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, ‘I find no basis for a charge against him. 39But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release “the king of the Jews”?’
40They shouted back, ‘No, not him! Give us Barabbas!’ Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
