偵察者の派遣
1さてヨシュアは、シティムの野営地から対岸へ二人の偵察者を送り込むことにしました。任務は、特にエリコの様子を調べることでした。二人は娼婦ラハブの家に着きました。そこで夜を過ごす計画だったのです。 2ところがエリコの王に、「イスラエル人のスパイらしい、怪しい二人組が、今晩、町に忍び込んだ」と通報する者がありました。 3王はすぐに憲兵隊をラハブの家に差し向け、二人の引き渡しを要求しました。「あいつらはスパイだぞ。イスラエルが送り込んだのだ。どうやってわれわれを攻撃しようか、探りに来たのだ。」
4しかしラハブは、二人をかくまったまま、憲兵隊長に答えました。「ああ、あの人たちならとっくに帰ったよ。ここにいたんだけどねえ。まさかスパイだなんて、思いもよらなかったわ。 5町の門が閉まるころ、夕闇にまぎれて町から出て行ったみたい。行き先までは知らないけど、急いで追いかければ捕まえられるかもしれないよ。」
6ところが実際は、彼女は二人を屋上へ連れて行き、乾燥させるために積み上げた亜麻（麻糸の材料となる植物）の中に隠していたのです。 7そうとも知らず、憲兵たちは二人を追って、くまなく捜しながらヨルダン川まで下って行きました。その間に、町の門は閉じられました。
8ラハブは、二人がまだ寝ないうちに屋上に上って来て、彼らに言いました。 9「あなたたちの神様が、この地をあなたたちのものにしようとしていることは、よくわかっています。みんな怖がっているわ。イスラエルと聞いただけで震え上がるほどよ。 10だって、イスラエルの人たちがエジプトを出た時、神様が紅海に道をつくられたっていうじゃない。それに、ヨルダン川の東側にいたエモリ人の二人の王様、あのシホン王とオグ王をどんな目に会わせたかということも、みんな聞いてるわ。何でもそこを攻め落とし、住民を皆殺しにしたんですって？ 11そんなことを聞いたら、怖がらないほうがおかしいでしょう。戦う勇気なんか吹っ飛ぶもの。あなたたちの神様はただの神様じゃないわね。きっと、天地を支配なさるお方に違いないわ。 12-13だから、一つだけお願いを聞いてほしいの。このエリコを占領する時、いのちだけは助けてもらえないかしら。私の両親や兄弟、それにその家族も。そのことを、あなたたちの神様の聖なる御名にかけて誓ってください。あなたたちを助けた私の真心に応えてほしいのです。」
14彼らはうなずきました。「われわれのことをしゃべらなければ、あなたにも家族にも傷一つ負わせないと誓おう。いのちにかけても、あなたを守る。」
15ラハブの家は町の城壁の上にあったので、二人の偵察者は、綱で窓からつり降ろしてもらいました。 16ラハブは二人に注意しました。「山へお逃げなさい。あなたたちを捜してる追っ手が引き返して来るまで、三日間、隠れていればいいわ。それからお帰りなさい。」
17-18二人は別れぎわにこう言い残しました。「いいかい。この赤いひもを窓に結びつけておきなさい。そして、両親や兄弟など身内の者はみな、この家でいっしょにいなさい。そうでなければ、何が起きても責任はもてない。 19一歩でもこの家から外へ出たら保証はないが、この家にいるかぎり、一人だって殺されたり傷つけられたりはしないと、はっきり約束しよう。 20ただし、もしあなたが裏切れば、誓いは無効だ。いいね。」
21「そのとおりにするわ。」こうしてラハブは、窓に赤いひもを結びつけました。
22二人の偵察者は山へ逃げ、三日間身を隠しました。追っ手は二人を捜し回りましたが、ついに見つけることができず、すごすごと町へ引き返して行きました。 23その後、二人は山を下りてヨルダン川を渡り、ヨシュアのもとへ帰って一部始終を報告しました。 24「主は、あの地を全部、われわれに下さいます。間違いありません。住民はみな、われわれを死ぬほど恐れているのです。」
Rahab and the spies
1Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. ‘Go, look over the land,’ he said, ‘especially Jericho.’ So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there.
2The king of Jericho was told, ‘Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.’ 3So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: ‘Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.’
4But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, ‘Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. 5At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.’ 6(But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.) 7So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut.
8Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof 9and said to them, ‘I know that the Lord has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea2:10 Or the Sea of Reeds for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.2:10 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them. 11When we heard of it, our hearts sank and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.
12‘Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign 13that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them – and that you will save us from death.’
14‘Our lives for your lives!’ the men assured her. ‘If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the Lord gives us the land.’
15So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. 16She said to them, ‘Go to the hills so that the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there for three days until they return, and then go on your way.’
17Now the men had said to her, ‘This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us 18unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. 19If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them. 20But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.’
21‘Agreed,’ she replied. ‘Let it be as you say.’
So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.
22When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. 23Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. 24They said to Joshua, ‘The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.’
