1そのころ、またおびただしい群衆が集まって来ましたが、みんなの食べる物がなくなったので、 2イエスは弟子たちを呼んで言われました。「この人たちはかわいそうに、もう三日もわたしといっしょにいるのだから、食べ物はとっくにないはずです。 3このまま帰らせたら、きっと途中で倒れてしまいます。それに遠くから来た人もいるでしょうから。」
4「でも、先生。こんな寂しい所で、これほど大ぜいの人たちのために、いったいどこで食べ物を手に入れるのですか。」
5「パンは幾つありますか。」「七つです。」
6イエスは、群衆に地べたに座るようにお命じになりました。そして七つのパンを取り、神に感謝の祈りをささげてから、ちぎって弟子たちに手渡され、弟子たちはみなに配りました。 7また、小さい魚が少しばかりあったので、これも同様に祝福してから、人々に配るよう弟子たちに手渡されました。
8-9こうして、全員が満腹するほど食べました。それからイエスは、人々を家にお帰しになりました。その日集まった人の数はおよそ四千人でしたが、あとでパン切れを拾い集めると、なんと七つのかごいっぱいになりました。
ダルマヌタ地方へ
10このあとすぐ、イエスは弟子たちと舟でダルマヌタ地方へ向かわれました。 11その地方のパリサイ人たちはイエスが来たと知り、議論をふっかけてやろうと、勇んでやって来ました。「奇跡を見せたらどうだ。天から不思議なしるしが現れでもしたら、あなたを信じようじゃないか。」
12このことばに、イエスは思わず、ため息をおつきになりました。「いったいどれだけ奇跡を見れば気がすむのですか。」
13イエスは彼らを残してまた舟に乗り、湖の向こう岸に渡られました。 14ところが、弟子たちが出発前に食べ物を用意するのをうっかり忘れたので、舟の中にある食べ物といえば、一かたまりのパンだけでした。
15舟の中で、イエスは弟子たちに、厳粛な表情で、「ヘロデ王とパリサイ人たちのパン種（彼らの誤った教えと偽善）に気をつけなさい」と言われました。 16弟子たちは、「先生は、なぜあんなことをおっしゃったんだろう」と首をかしげ、結局、パンを持って来なかったからだろうということに話が落ち着きました。
17弟子たちがそのことで互いに議論し合っているのを聞いて、イエスは言われました。「いや、そんなことではありません。まだわからないのですか。なんとものわかりの悪い人たちなのでしょう。 18目も耳も持っているのに、見えも聞こえもしなかったのですか。何も覚えていないのですか。 19五つのパンを五千人に食べさせた時、余ったパン切れは幾かごになりましたか。」「十二かごです。」 20「では、七つのパンで四千人に食べさせた時は？」「七かごです。」
21「それなのに、まだあなたがたは、パンがないのをわたしが苦にしていると思うのですか。」
22一行がベツサイダに到着すると、人々が盲人の手を引いて来ました。「どうか、さわって治してやってください」と頼むので、 23イエスはその盲人の手を取り、村の外へ連れ出されました。そして彼の両眼につばをつけ、手をあてて、「どうですか、何か見えますか」とお尋ねになりました。 24男はあたりをきょろきょろ見回しながら、「は、はい、見えます。人が見えます。ぼんやりしていますが……。まるで、木が歩いてるみたいです」と答えました。 25イエスはもう一度、両眼におさわりになりました。男はじっと見つめていました。するとだんだん視力が回復し、すべてのものがはっきり見えるようになりました。
26イエスは男を家族のもとへ帰し、「村へは行かないように」と注意されました。
イエスこそ救い主
27イエスの一行はガリラヤを去り、ピリポ・カイザリヤの村々へ行きました。その道々、イエスは弟子たちに、「人々は、わたしのことをだれだと言っていますか」とお尋ねになりました。
28「バプテスマのヨハネだと言う者もいれば、エリヤだと言う者もいます。また昔の預言者が生き返ったと言う者もいます」と、弟子たちは答えました。
29するとイエスは、「では、あなたがたは、わたしをだれだと思っているのですか」とお尋ねになりました。即座にペテロが、「あなたこそキリスト（ギリシャ語で救い主）です」と答えました。 30ところがイエスは、このことをだれにも話してはいけないと、きびしく言われました。
31それから、やがてご自分が経験する恐ろしい出来事――長老、祭司長、ユダヤ人の指導者たちに捨てられ、殺され、三日目に復活すること――を弟子たちに話し始められました。 32それも、実にはっきりとお話しになったので、ペテロはイエスをわきに呼び、「そんなことをおっしゃるものではありません」といさめました。
33イエスはふり返って弟子たちを見ながら、非常にきびしい口調でペテロに言われました。「下がれ、サタン！ あなたはただ人間的な見方をして、神のことを考えてみようともしていません。」
34それから、弟子たちと群衆とを呼び寄せ、こう言われました。「だれでもわたしについて来たければ、自分中心の生活をやめ、自分の十字架を負って、わたしについて来なさい。 35自分のいのちを守ることばかりにとらわれている者は、それを失います。わたしと福音とのためにいのちを捨てる者が、いのちを得るのです。
36たとえ全世界を自分のものにしても、いのちを失ったら、何の得があるでしょう。 37いのちを買い戻すどんな手だてがあるというのでしょう。 38この不信仰と罪の時代にあって、わたしとわたしのことばとを恥じるなら、メシヤであるわたしも、やがて父の栄光を帯びて聖なる天使と共に帰って来る時、そのような者を恥じるのです。」
Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand
1During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2“I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”
4His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
5“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied.
6He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. 7They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. 8The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 9About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away, 10he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.
11The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. 12He sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” 13Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
14The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15“Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”
16They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”
17Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
“Twelve,” they replied.
20“And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
They answered, “Seven.”
21He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida
22They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. 23He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”
24He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”
25Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into8:26 Some manuscripts go and tell anyone in the village.”
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah
27Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
28They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”
29“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
30Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
Jesus Predicts His Death
31He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
33But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
The Way of the Cross
34Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35For whoever wants to save their life8:35 The Greek word means either life or soul; also in verses 36 and 37. will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
