1天国を、こんなふうにたとえることもできます。農園の経営者が、果樹園で働く日雇い労働者を雇おうと、朝早く出かけて行きました。 2そして、一日一デナリの約束で、彼らを果樹園へ行かせました。
3二、三時間後、また職を求める人々の集まる場所へ行ってみると、仕事にあぶれた者たちがたむろしています。 4それで、その人たちにも、夕方には適当な賃金を払うという約束で、果樹園へ行かせました。 5昼ごろと午後の三時ごろにも、同じようにしました。
6夕方も五時近くに、もう一度出かけてみると、まだぶらぶらしている者たちがいます。『どうして一日中、何もしないでここにいるのか』と尋ねると、 7『仕事がないのです』と答えたので、農園主は言いました。『それなら今すぐ行って、私の農園でみんなといっしょに働きなさい。』
8終業の時刻になり、農園主は監督に言いつけて、労働者たちを呼び集めました。そして、最後に雇った男たちから順に日当を支払いました。 9五時に雇われた男たちの日当はなんと一人一デナリです。 10それで、早くから仕事にかかっていた男たちは、もっとたくさんもらえるだろうと思いました。ところが、彼らの日当もやはり一デナリだったのです。
11-12当てがはずれた者たちはみな、農園主に文句を言いました。『あの人たちは、たった一時間働いただけなのです。なのに、この炎天下、一日中働いた自分たちと同じに払ってやるんですか。』
13ところが、農園主はその一人に答えました。『いいかね。私はあなたに何も悪いことはしていない。あなたは一日一デナリで働くことを承知したはずだ。 14文句を言わずに、それを持って帰りなさい。私はだれにでも分け隔てなく払ってやりたいのだ。 15自分の金をどう使おうと自由だろう。私がほかの者たちに親切なので、あなたは腹を立てているのか。』 16このように、最後の者が最初になり、最初の者が最後になるのです。」
仕える者になりなさい
17さて、エルサレムへ行く途中のことです。道々イエスは十二人の弟子だけを呼び寄せ、 18やがて自分がエルサレムでどんな目に会うかをお話しになりました。「わたしは、祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちに引き渡され、彼らから死刑を宣告されます。 19そしてローマの役人の手に渡され、あざけられ、十字架につけられます。しかし、わたしは三日目に復活するのです。」
20その時、ゼベダイの息子ヤコブとヨハネとの母親が、息子たちを連れて来ました。母親はイエスの前にひざまずき、「お願いがございます」と言いました。
21「どんなことですか。」「どうぞ、あなたの御国で、この二人の息子を、あなたの次に高い位につかせてやってください。」
22ところがイエスは、「あなたには、何もわかっていません」と答え、今度は、ヤコブとヨハネのほうをごらんになりました。「あなたがたは、わたしが飲もうとしている杯を飲むことができますか。」「はい。できます。」イエスの質問に、二人はきっぱり答えました。
23しかしイエスは、「確かに飲むことにはなるでしょう。しかし、だれをわたしの次の位につかせるかは、わたしの決めることではありません。わたしの父がお決めになることです」と言われました。
24ほかの十人の弟子たちは、ヤコブとヨハネがイエスにどんな願い事をしたかを聞いて、ひどく腹を立てました。
25そこでイエスは、彼らを呼び集め、言われました。「この世の普通の人たちの間では、王は暴君であり、役人は部下にいばり散らすものです。 26だが、あなたがたの間では違います。リーダーになりたい者は、仕える者になりなさい。 27上に立ちたいと思う者は、身を低くして仕えなければなりません。 28メシヤのわたしでさえ、人々に仕えられるためではなく、みなに仕えるためにこの世に来たのです。そればかりか、多くの人の罪の代償として自分のいのちを与えるために来たのです。だからあなたがたも、わたしを見ならいなさい。」
29イエスの一行がエリコの町を出ると、大ぜいの人があとについて行きました。
30途中の道ばたに二人の盲人が座っていました。イエスが通られると聞いた二人は、大声で訴えました。「主よ。ダビデ王の子よ！ 私どもをあわれんでください。」
31人々が黙らせようとすると、ますます激しく叫び立てます。
32-33イエスは二人の前で足を止め、「どうしてほしいのですか」とお尋ねになりました。「先生。見えるようになりたいのです。」彼らは答えました。
34イエスは心からかわいそうに思い、彼らの目にさわられました。すると、たちまち目が見えるようになり、二人はイエスについて行きました。
The parable of the workers in the vineyard
1‘For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2He agreed to pay them a denarius20:2 A denarius was the usual daily wage of a day labourer. for the day and sent them into his vineyard.
3‘About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the market-place doing nothing. 4He told them, “You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.” 5So they went.
‘He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. 6About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, “Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?”
7‘ “Because no-one has hired us,” they answered.
‘He said to them, “You also go and work in my vineyard.”
8‘When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, “Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.”
9‘The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12“These who were hired last worked only one hour,” they said, “and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.”
13‘But he answered one of them, “I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?”
16‘So the last will be first, and the first will be last.’
Jesus predicts his death a third time
17Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them, 18‘We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death 19and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!’
A mother’s request
20Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favour of him.
21‘What is it you want?’ he asked.
She said, ‘Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.’
22‘You don’t know what you are asking,’ Jesus said to them. ‘Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?’
‘We can,’ they answered.
23Jesus said to them, ‘You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.’
24When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. 25Jesus called them together and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27and whoever wants to be first must be your slave – 28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’
Two blind men receive sight
29As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. 30Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!’
31The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!’
32Jesus stopped and called them. ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ he asked.
33‘Lord,’ they answered, ‘we want our sight.’
34Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
