主はまた来られる
1-2愛する皆さん。これは二通目の手紙です。私はこの二通の手紙で、あなたがたがすでに知っている事柄を、もう一度思い起こしてもらおうとしているのです。それは、昔の聖なる預言者たちが語ったことば、また使徒たちが伝えた、主であり救い主である方のことばです。
3まず第一に思い出してほしいことは、終末の時代には、あざける者どもが現れ、真理をあざ笑い、思いつくかぎりの悪を行うということです。 4彼らはこんなことを言う議論のベテランです。「キリストがまた帰って来るという約束はどうなったのか。この世界は造られた最初の日から何も変わらないではないか。イエスが帰って来るなどということはありえない。」 5-6そう言いはる彼らは、神がかつて、この世界を大洪水によって滅ぼされたという事実を見落としています。天は昔のままですが、神が最初に造られた地は、洪水によって滅びました。 7しかし神は、今の天と地を、不敬虔な者たちのさばきの日に火で焼き滅ぼすため、そのまま残しておくようにされたのです。
8愛する皆さん。主にとって一日は千年のようであり、千年は一日のようです。 9再び主がおいでになるという約束がなかなか実現しないので、いったいどうなっているのかと思うかもしれません。しかし主は、いたずらに日を延ばしておられるのではありません。一人でも滅びないように、すべての人が悔い改めるために必要な時間を与えようと、忍耐して待っておられるのです。 10しかし主の日は、盗人のように、思いがけない時にやって来ます。その時、天は恐ろしいとどろきと共に消えうせ、天体は焼けて崩れ落ち、地と地上のすべてのものは跡形もなく焼き滅ぼされてしまいます。 11このように、これらのものがみな滅び去るのですから、私たちはどれほどきよく、敬虔な生活を送らなければならないことでしょう。 12その日が来るのをただ待ち望むだけでなく、早めるようにしなければなりません。その日、神は天に火を放たれ、天体は燃えて溶け去ります。 13しかし私たちは、そのあとに、神の目にかなう人々だけが住む、新しい天と地が用意されるという約束をいただいています。
14愛する皆さん。このようなことを待ち望んでいるあなたがたですから、罪を避けて生きることに精一杯励みなさい。また、すべての人と平和に過ごしなさい。 15-16なぜ主が、こんなにも長く待っておられるのか考えてみなさい。主は、私たちが救いを伝える時間を与えておられるのです。学識の深い、愛する兄弟パウロも、多くの手紙の中で同じことを書いています。しかし彼の手紙はむずかしいところがあるので、中には的はずれの解釈をする者がいます。彼らは、聖書のほかの箇所もそうですが、パウロが言おうとしていることとは全く別の意味を引き出し、自分で滅びを招いているのです。
17愛する皆さん。あなたがたは、このことを前もって知っているのですから、偽教師たちの誤った考えに惑わされて、確固としたものを失わないようによく注意しなさい。 18そして、主であり救い主であるイエス・キリストをさらに深く知って、主の恵みと知識において成長しなさい。このキリストに、すべての栄光が、今も後も、永遠にいつまでもありますように。アーメン。

The day of the Lord
1Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Saviour through your apostles.
3Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4They will say, ‘Where is this “coming” he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.’ 5But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
8But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.3:10 Some manuscripts be burned up
11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.3:12 Or as you wait eagerly for the day of God to come That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
14So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
17Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. 18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
To him be glory both now and for ever! Amen.
