偽教師たちの運命
1しかし、預言者の活躍していた時代にも、偽預言者は現れました。同様に、あなたがたの中にも偽教師が現れます。彼らは滅びをもたらす異端をひそかに持ち込んで、自分たちを買い取ってくださった主まで否定しようとします。しかし、彼らを待っているのは、突然の恐ろしい最期です。 2多くの者が彼らの不道徳な教えにひかれ、そのためにキリストとその教えが非難されます。 3偽教師たちは貪欲で、人のふところをねらうためには、手段を選びません。しかし神は昔から、彼らをきびしく罰してこられました。彼らの滅びは確かです。
4神は天使でさえ、罪を犯した場合は少しも手加減せず、地獄に投げ込み、審判の日まで、ほら穴の暗闇に閉じ込めました。 5また、神は昔、神を恐れない世界を赦さず、ノアとその家族の八人を除いて、大洪水によって滅ぼしました（創世6―8章）。 6また、ソドムとゴモラの町を灰の山と変え、地上から消し去りました（創世19章）。それは、後世の不敬虔な者への見せしめであり、それによって、彼らが神を恐れるようになるためでした。 7-8しかし、同時に神は、正しい人であったロトをソドムから救い出しました。ソドムに住んでいた彼は、毎日、人々の不道徳なふるまいを見て、良心を痛めていたからです。 9このように、主は敬虔な者たちを誘惑から救い出し、神を恐れない人々には、最後の審判の日まで閉じ込めておかれるのです。 10汚れた情欲を燃やし、傲慢で主の権威を侮るような者には、主は特にきびしい態度で臨まれます。
彼らは尊大に教会の指導者たちを非難して、恐れないのです。 11それに比べて、天使たちははるかにまさる権威を持っていながら、主の御前で彼らを非難したりしません。 12偽教師たちはまるで、捕らえられて殺されるために生まれてきた理性のない動物と同じで、無分別です。彼らが滅ぼされるのは、目に見えています。 13それが、偽教師を待つ運命です。彼らは、昼間から飲んだり騒いだりし、享楽にふけっています。彼らはしみや傷のようなもので、あなたがたの間では不名誉な面汚しです。 14彼らのみだらな行為は底なしで、その罪に濁った視線で、うわついた女性を誘惑しています。その貪欲の果てにわが身を滅ぼしてしまう、まさにのろわれた者たちです。 15また彼らは、不正によって得た金を愛したベオルの子、預言者バラムのように、正しい道を踏み外してさまよい続けています。 16もっともバラムは、狂った道をそれ以上進まないようにと、人間の声で語ったろばにとがめられました（民数22―24章）。
17このような偽教師は、干上がった泉、風に吹き払われる霧のように、全く内実がありません。彼らを待っているのは暗闇です。 18彼らは臆面もなく、やっとの思いで罪の生活から足を洗った人たちを、肉の欲望や誘惑によって、もう一度罪に誘い込もうとしているのです。 19彼らはこう言います。「善人になったからといって、救われるとは限らないなら、いっそのこと、悪いことをしたほうがましじゃないか。やりたいことをやるのが自由というものだ。」このように、彼らは「自由」を教えながら、自分自身が罪と滅びの奴隷になっているのです。何かに支配されている人は、その奴隷なのです。 20主であり救い主であるイエス・キリストを知り、この世の悪い生活からのがれた人が、またもとの罪の生活に舞い戻り、その奴隷となるなら、その状態は以前よりもっと悪くなるでしょう。 21キリストを知ったあとで聖なる戒めにそむくくらいなら、キリストについて何も知らなかったほうが、彼らにとってよかったのです。 22古いことわざに、「犬は自分が吐いた物をなめる」「豚はいくら洗ってやっても、どろの中をころげ回る」とありますが、まさに罪の生活に舞い戻る人々のことではありませんか。
False teachers and their destruction
1But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them – bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
4For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell,2:4 Greek Tartarus putting them in chains of darkness2:4 Some manuscripts in gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment; 5if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; 6if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless 8(for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard) – 9if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment. 10This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the flesh2:10 In contexts like this, the Greek word for flesh (sarx) refers to the sinful state of human beings, often presented as a power in opposition to the Spirit; also in verse 18. and despise authority.
Bold and arrogant, they are not afraid to heap abuse on celestial beings; 11yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not heap abuse on such beings when bringing judgment on them from2:11 Many manuscripts beings in the presence of the Lord. 12But these people blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like unreasoning animals, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like animals they too will perish.
13They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, revelling in their pleasures while they feast with you.2:13 Some manuscripts in their love feasts 14With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed – an accursed brood! 15They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer,2:15 Greek Bosor who loved the wages of wickedness. 16But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey – an animal without speech – who spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.
17These people are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. 18For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. 19They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity – for ‘people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.’ 20If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22Of them the proverbs are true: ‘A dog returns to its vomit,’2:22 Prov. 26:11 and, ‘A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.’
