悪魔の攻撃に備えなさい
1そこで教会の長老（指導者）たちに、私も同じ長老の職にある者として、ひとこと言っておきます。私は、キリストの十字架上の死の目撃者として、また、再び来られるキリストの栄光を共に受ける者として、ぜひとも次のことをお願いしたいのです。 2神の羊の群れ（教会）を養いなさい。いやいやながらではなく、喜んで、その務めに当たりなさい。利益を求める気持ちからでなく、熱心に、喜んで、羊の群れを飼いなさい。 3支配的にふるまわず、良い模範を示して、彼らを指導するよう心がけなさい。 4そうすれば、偉大な羊飼いであるキリストがおいでになる時、朽ちない栄光の冠を受けるのです。
5青年たちにも言います。長老たちの指導に従いなさい。みな、謙遜になって互いに仕え合うべきです。神は、高慢な者には敵対し、謙遜な者には恵みを与えられるからです。
6あなたがたは、神の力強い御手の下で自分を低くしていなさい。ちょうどよい時に、神はあなたがたを高く引き上げてくださるでしょう。 7思いわずらいを、すべて神にゆだねなさい。神があなたがたのことを心配してくださるからです。
8最大の敵である悪魔の攻撃に備えて、警戒しなさい。悪魔は、飢えてほえたけるライオンのように、引き裂くべき獲物を求めてうろつき回っているのです。 9信仰に堅く立って、悪魔の攻撃に立ち向かいなさい。ご存じのように、あらゆる地域のクリスチャンたちが、同じ苦しみを通っているのです。
10キリストにあって、あふれるほど恵みを注いでくださる神は、しばらくの苦しみのあとで、あなたがたに永遠の栄光を与えてくださいます。神ご自身があなたがたを力づけ、しっかり立たせ、強めてくださいます。 11どうか、神のご支配が永遠にありますように。アーメン。
12この手紙を筆記してくれたのは、忠実な信仰の友シルワノです。私は、この手紙があなたがたを力づけるよう期待しています。なぜならここに、どうすれば神の恵みをいただけるかを記したからです。この手紙が、あなたがたを神の愛のうちにしっかりと立たせるのに役立つと信じます。
13ローマにある教会が、よろしくと言っています。わが子マルコも、よろしくとのことです。 14互いに、愛に満ちたあいさつを交わしなさい。
キリストを信じる皆さんに、平安がありますように。

To the elders and the flock
1To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them – not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
5In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility towards one another, because,
‘God opposes the proud
but shows favour to the humble.’5:5 Prov. 3:34
6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
8Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
10And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

12With the help of Silas,5:12 Greek Silvanus, a variant of Silas whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.
13She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.
14Greet one another with a kiss of love.
