1キリスト・イエスの奴隷であるパウロとテモテから、ピリピの町にいる牧師と執事たち、および信徒の皆さんへ。 2どうか、神の祝福があなたがた一同にありますように。父なる神と主イエス・キリストが、一人一人を豊かに祝福し、心にも生活にも平安を満たしてくださいますように。
3あなたがたを思う私の祈りは、いつも神への賛美にあふれています。 4そして、私の心は喜びに満たされるのです。 5それは、あなたがたが福音（イエス・キリストによる救いの知らせ）を初めて聞いた日から今日まで、全力をあげて、その知らせを宣べ伝える働きに協力してくれたからです。 6あなたがたのうちに良い働きを始められた神は、必ずそれを恵みのうちに成長させ、やがてキリスト・イエスが帰って来られる日までに、それを完成してくださると、私は堅く信じています。
ピリピ教会へのパウロの愛
7こう考えるのは、きわめて当然です。あなたがたは、私にとって特別な存在なのですから。私が獄中にある時も、自由の身でキリストの福音を語っている時も、あなたがたは、私と共に神の祝福をいただいたからです。 8私がキリスト・イエスの愛の心をもって、あなたがたをどんなに深く愛し、慕っているかをご存じなのは神だけです。 9私は祈っています。どうか、あなたがたの愛が、もっともっと満ちあふれますように。同時に、霊的な知識と洞察力も、さらに深められますように。 10それは、あなたがたに、善悪をはっきり見分ける力が備わり、主が来られる日まで、だれからも非難されることなく、心がきよく保たれるよう願うからです。 11どうか、神の子どもにふさわしく、親切な良い行いができますように。それは、大いに主をほめたたえ、主の栄光を現すことになるのです。
12愛する皆さん。このことを、わきまえていてほしいのです。ここで私の身に起こったことはすべて、キリストについての福音を広めるのに、たいへん役立っているという事実をです。 13周囲の人たちはみな、兵営の兵士に至るまで、私が、ただクリスチャンであるというだけの理由で投獄されていることを知っています。 14また私を見て、ここにいる多くのクリスチャンは、投獄など恐れなくなりました。彼らは耐え忍んでいる私の姿に勇気づけられ、ますます大胆に、キリストのことを人々に語るようになったのです。 15もっとも中には、神が私をこのように用いてくださるのをねたんで、福音を宣べ伝えている人もいます。彼らは、勇敢な伝道者という名声がほしいのです。しかし、もっと純粋な動機から伝道している人もいます。 16私を愛する気持ちから、そうしているのです。私をこのような状況下に置かれた主の目的が、福音を弁証させる点にあることを知っているからです。 17ところが別の人たちは、自分たちの成功によって、獄中にある私の苦痛がもっと増すだろうと考えて、つまり、私にねたみ心を起こさせようとして伝道しているのです。 18しかし、どのような動機からであれ、キリストが宣べ伝えられているのは事実であり、私は喜んでいます。
生きるにしても死ぬにしても
19これからも、この喜びは続くでしょう。なぜなら、あなたがたの祈りと御霊の助けによって、このことがすべて私に益となることがわかっているからです。 20というのも、私はこのような期待と希望とをいだいて生きているのです。すなわち、一つも自分で恥じるようなことはせず、かえって、この試練の時も、いつものように大胆に語り、また、生きるにしても死ぬにしても、いつもキリストのすばらしさを身をもって現したいと願っているのです。 21私にとって生きることは、キリストのために良い機会を得たことを意味し、死ぬことは、さらにすばらしいことを意味するからです。 22しかし、生きているからこそ、人々をキリストに導く機会に恵まれているとすれば、生と死のどちらがよいのか、私にはわかりません。 23ある時は生きていたいと思い、また、ある時は反対の気持ちになります。というのも、私にとって、この世を去ってキリストのそばにいることほど願わしいことはないからです。そのほうが、地上にとどまっているより、どれだけ幸せかわかりません。 24しかし、地上では、もっとあなたがたの役に立てることも事実です。 25私にはまだ、この世で生きる使命があるのです。あなたがたの信仰の成長を助け、あなたがたがもっと喜びにあふれるために、もうしばらくの間、地上で長らえることになるでしょう。 26私が生き延びて、もう一度そちらに行った時、あなたがたのうちに喜びがわき上がり、私を無事に守ってくださったイエス・キリストを心から賛美するようになることでしょう。
27しかし、たとえ私の身にどんなことが降りかかろうと、あなたがたは、いつもキリストの福音にふさわしく生活するよう心がけてください。そうすれば、もう一度会えるにしても、会えないにしても、あなたがたについて、いつでもうれしい報告を聞けるでしょうから。つまり、あなたがたが、キリストの福音を宣べ伝えるという一つの目標に向かって、しっかり一つとなり、 28敵対する者たちのどんなしわざにもたじろぐことがないと。そのことは彼らの滅びを暗示するのですが、あなたがたにとっては、神が共にいて永遠のいのちを与えてくださることの確かな証拠となります。 29あなたがたは、ただキリストを信じるだけでなく、キリストのために苦しむという特権をも与えられているのです。 30私たちは、共に戦っているのです。あなたがたは先に、キリストのために苦しんでいる私の姿を見ました。そして、今なお、激しく大きな戦いの真っただ中にいる私のことを、よく知っているはずです。

Thanksgiving and prayer
3I thank my God every time I remember you. 4In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
7It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. 8God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
9And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ – to the glory and praise of God.
Paul’s chains advance the gospel
12Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters,1:12 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family; also in verse 14; and in 3:1, 13, 17; 4:1, 8, 21. that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. 13As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard1:13 Or whole palace and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.
15It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defence of the gospel. 17The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.
Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.1:19 Or vindication; or salvation 20I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labour for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.
Life worthy of the gospel
27Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit,1:27 Or in one spirit striving together as one for the faith of the gospel 28without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved – and that by God. 29For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, 30since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
