ネヘミヤの最後の改革
1その日、モーセの律法の書が朗読されましたが、その中に、アモン人やモアブ人は神殿で礼拝してはならないと書いてあることがわかりました。 2というのは、彼らがイスラエルに対して友好的でないばかりか、バラムを雇って、のろいをかけようとさえしたことがあったからです。神は、こののろいを祝福に変えてくださったのでした。 3この規定が読み上げられると直ちに、外国人は一人残らず集会から追放されました。
4このことが起こる前の話ですが、神殿の倉庫の管理者で、トビヤと親しかった祭司エルヤシブが、 5トビヤのために倉庫を豪華な客間に改造するということがありました。この倉庫には以前、穀物のささげ物、香料、器物、穀物や新しいぶどう酒やオリーブ油の十分の一税が保管されていました。モーセは、これらのささげ物はレビ人や聖歌隊員や門衛に支給すると定めていました。このほか、祭司のためのささげ物も保管されていました。 6ちょうどその時、私はエルサレムにいませんでした。アルタシャスタ王の第三十二年に、バビロンへ帰っていたのです。再び許可を得てエルサレムに戻ると、 7帰着早々、この悪事を知らされたのです。 8私は激しい憤りを覚え、トビヤの持ち物を全部外へ放り出しました。 9そして、部屋をきよめさせ、神殿の器物、穀物のささげ物、香料を、元どおりそこに戻したのです。
10私はまた、生活費の支給が打ち切られたため、礼拝の務めをする聖歌隊員ともども、おのおのの農地に引き揚げてしまったレビ人のことも聞かされました。 11そこですぐ、指導者たちとじかに会い、「どうして、神殿をないがしろにするのだ」と談判しました。そのようにして、レビ人をみな呼び戻し、本来の職務に就かせたのです。 12ユダの人々はみな再び、穀物やぶどう酒やオリーブ油の十分の一のささげ物を神殿の宝物倉に持って来るようになりました。 13私は、祭司シェレムヤ、学者ツァドク、レビ人ペダヤに倉庫の管理を任せ、マタヌヤの孫でザクルの子ハナンを補佐役にしました。みな評判のよい人々です。彼らの仕事は、仲間のレビ人に適正な配給をすることでした。 14神様、この私の忠実な行いを心にお留めください。私が神殿のためにしたすべてのことを、お忘れにならないでください。
15ある日、私は畑で、安息日だというのに、ぶどうを絞ったり、麦束を運んだりしている者や、ぶどう酒、ぶどう、いちじくなどの産物をろばに積んで、エルサレムに運び込もうとしている者たちを見つけました。私は彼らを、公衆の面前でしかりつけました。 16ツロから来た商人も、魚などの商品を持って来て、安息日にエルサレムで売っていました。 17私は、ユダの指導者たちに尋ねました。「よくも安息日を汚してくれたものだ。 18元はといえば、私たちの先祖がこんなことをしたから、私たちもこの都も、災難をこうむったのではなかったか。こんなことを続けていたら、もっと大きな御怒りを招くことになる。」
19それ以来、私は金曜日の日没に都の門を閉め、安息日が終わるまで開かないようにと命じました。そして、従者に門を監視させ、安息日に商品が持ち込まれないようにしたのです。 20商人や業者が、エルサレムの外にテントを張ったことが一、二回ありましたが、 21私は彼らをしかって言いました。「いったい、どういうつもりなのか。城壁の回りでうろうろしてはならない。二度とこんなまねをしたら、即刻逮捕する。」それ以後、彼らは安息日に姿を見せなくなりました。 22それから、レビ人に命じて、身をきよめさせ、安息日をきよく保つために門を守らせました。神様、このような、あなたをお喜ばせする行いを心にお留めください。大いなる愛で私を包んでください。
23このころ、ユダヤ人の中には、アシュドデ人やアモン人やモアブ人の女と結婚している者があり、 24ユダヤのことばが全くわからない子どもが大ぜいいることに気づきました。 25そこで、その親たちを非難してのろい、数人をなぐり倒し、髪の毛を引き抜きました。こうして、子どもを外国人とは絶対に結婚させないと、神に誓わせたのです。 26「そもそも、ソロモン王はこの問題でつまずいたのではないか。彼の右に出るような王はいなかった。神から愛され、イスラエルの王として立てられたあのソロモンが、外国の女にそそのかされ、偶像礼拝に陥ったではなかったか。 27おまえたちのしたことは、それほど罪深いことなのだ。見過ごしになどできるだろうか。」
28また、大祭司エルヤシブを父に持つエホヤダの子の一人が、ホロン人サヌバラテの娘を嫁にしていることがわかったので、彼を神殿から追放しました。 29神様、どうかこの者たちを忘れないでください。祭司職を汚し、祭司やレビ人の契約と誓約を破ったからです。
30私は外国人を追放し、祭司とレビ人に務めを割り当て、各自の仕事を徹底させました。 31彼らは、定められたとおり祭壇にたきぎを運び、いけにえや初物のささげ物の管理に当たりました。神様、どうか私をあわれみ、心にお留めください。

10¶ And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. 11Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? 15¶ In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. 16There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. 17Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? 18Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath. 19And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day. 20So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice. 21Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you.
