すべての人のために祈る
1さて、次のことを勧めます。すべての人のために、神のあわれみが注がれるよう熱心に祈り、とりなしなさい。そして、やがて彼らにも恵みが与えられると信じて、感謝しなさい。 2また、すべての重い責任を負っている人たちのために祈りなさい。それは、私たちが主を深く思いながら、平安のうちに落ち着いた一生を過ごすためです。 3そうするのはたいへん良いことで、救い主である神に喜んでいただけることです。 4神はすべての人が救われて、真理を理解するに至ることを切に望んでおられます。 5-6その真理とはこうです。神と人間とは、それぞれ別の岸に立っています。そして、人となられたキリスト・イエスがその間に立ち、ご自分のいのちを全人類のために差し出すことによって、両者の橋渡しをされたのです。これこそ、時が至って、神が私たちに示された教えにほかなりません。 7この真理、つまり、救いは信仰によって与えられるという神の計画を外国人に伝えるために、私は伝道者また使徒として選ばれました。これは、うそ偽りのない事実です。
8そこで勧めます。男は、怒ったり恨みをいだいたりせずに、どこででも、きよい手を上げて祈りなさい。 9-10同じように女も、控え目な服装と態度で、品位を保つように心がけなさい。神を敬う女は、はでな髪形や宝石、高価な衣装によってではなく、良い行いとやさしいふるまいによって自分を飾りなさい。 11女は、静かに、謙遜な心で教えを聞き、また学ぶべきです。 12女が男にものを教えたり、権力をふるったりするようなことがあってはなりません。女は、教会の集会では黙っていなさい。 13なぜなら、神は最初にアダムを、そのあとでエバをお造りになったからです。 14アダムは悪魔にだまされませんでしたが、エバはだまされ、罪を犯してしまいました。 15そこで神は、女に子を産む時の苦しみをお与えになったのです。しかし、もし女が慎み深く、信仰と愛ときよさを持って生活するなら、そのたましいは救われます。
Instructions on worship
1I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – 2for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, 4who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. 7And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle – I am telling the truth, I am not lying – and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles.
8Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. 9I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
11A woman2:11 Or wife; also in verse 12 should learn in quietness and full submission. 12I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;2:12 Or over her husband she must be quiet. 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15But women2:15 Greek she will be saved through childbearing – if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.
