ネブカデネザルの夢
1ネブカデネザル王の治世第二年のある夜、王は恐ろしい夢を見、震えおののきながら目を覚ましました。 2王は直ちに呪法師、呪文師、呪術師、占星学者を呼び寄せて、その夢を解き明かすよう要求したのです。 3一同が召し出されると、王は言いました。「よく思い出せないのだが、恐ろしい夢を見た。不吉な予感がしてならない。私の見た夢を説明してくれ。」 4そこで占星学者たちは、アラム語で王に言いました。「まず、どんな夢かをお教えください。そうすれば、その意味を解き明かしてごらんに入れます。」 5「今言ったではないか。どんな夢か思い出せないのだ。どんな夢で、それがどんな意味か説明しないのなら、おまえたちの手足をばらばらにし、おまえたちの家をごみの山としてくれよう。 6しかし、夢とその意味を説明したなら、たくさんの褒美を取らせ、栄誉も与えよう。さあ、教えてくれ。」 7「まずその夢をお教えくださらないことには、どうして意味を解き明かすことができましょう。」 8-9「おまえたちの魂胆はわかったぞ。夢の示す災いが私に降りかかるまで、時間をかせごうというのだろう。どんな夢かもわからないくらいなら、おまえたちの解き明かしなど信じられるか！」 10「人の見た夢をあてる者など、地上にはおりません！ また、そんなむりなことをお尋ねになる王も、世界にはおられません！ 11王は、できないことをしろとおっしゃるのです。神々ではない人間に、ごらんになった夢はわかりません。それができる神々は、ここにはいないのです。」
12これを聞いた王は、かんかんに怒り、「バビロンの知者を一人残らず死刑にせよ」と命じました。 13ダニエルと三人の友人も、他の知者たちといっしょに殺されることになりました。 14しかし、死刑執行の責任者アルヨクが姿を現した時、ダニエルは非常な知恵をもって事態に対処し、こう尋ねました。 15「なぜ王はそんなにご立腹なのですか。いったい何があったのですか。」そこでアルヨクは、事の次第を説明しました。 16すると、ダニエルは王にお目どおりを願い出て、「しばらくのご猶予を下さい。ごらんになった夢と、その意味をお教えいたします」と言いました。
17ダニエルは家に帰り、さっそく、仲間のハナヌヤ、ミシャエル、アザルヤに事の成り行きを話しました。 18彼らは天の神に、ほかの者といっしょに殺されなくてもすむように、この夢の秘密を明らかにし、そのことによってあわれみを示してくださるよう願いました。 19その晩、幻の中で、神はダニエルに、王が見た夢を示したのです。ダニエルは天の神をほめたたえました。
20「神の御名が、永遠にほめたたえられますように。
神だけがすべての知恵と力をお持ちです。
21世界の出来事は、すべて神の支配下にあります。
王を退け、ほかの者を王位につけるのは、
神にほかなりません。
知者に知恵を与え、学者に知性を与えるのも、
神です。
22神は、人の理解を越えた
深い奥義を明らかにしてくださいます。
人の目に隠されているどんなこともご存じです。
神は光ですから、どんな暗闇も
見通してしまわれるのです。
23私の先祖の神よ。
心から感謝し、賛美します。
私に知恵と健やかな体を与えてくださったばかりか、
今、王の夢とその意味をお教えくださいました。」
夢を解くダニエル
24それからダニエルは、バビロンの知者を死刑にするよう命令されていたアルヨクに会い、こう言いました。「彼らを殺してはなりません。私を王のもとへ案内してください。王の知りたがっておられることをお教えします。」 25アルヨクは急いでダニエルを王のもとへ案内して、こう言いました。「ユダヤ人の捕虜の中に、王の夢を解き明かせる者を見つけました。」 26王はダニエルに言いました。「なに、ほんとうか。私の見た夢と、その意味を解き明かせるのだな。」 27ダニエルは答えました。「どんな知者も、占星学者も、呪法師も、魔術師も、そのようなことはできないでしょう。 28しかし、隠されていることを明らかにする神が、天におられます。この神が、夢の中で、将来どのようなことが起こるかを王に示したのです。これから申し上げることが、王のごらんになった夢です。 29王様。あなたは、これから起こる出来事を夢でごらんになりました。それは隠されていることを明らかにする神が、王に語ったのです。 30ところで、おことわりしておかなければなりませんが、私が王の夢の秘密を知っておりますのは、ほかの人よりも知恵があるからではありません。神が王のために、私に示してくださったからです。
31王様。あなたがごらんになったのは、人の形をした、巨大な力ある像で、まぶしく光り輝き、ぞっとするほど恐ろしい姿をしていました。 32この像の頭は純金、胸と両腕は銀、腹とももは青銅、 33すねは鉄、足は一部が鉄、一部が粘土でできていました。 34けれども王が見ておられるうちに、一つの岩が、超自然的な方法で山腹から切り出されました。その岩は像に向かって突進し、鉄と粘土の足を粉々に砕きました。 35すると像全体が倒れ、鉄、粘土、青銅、銀、金も砕けて破片の山と化したのです。その破片はもみがらのように小さく、すべて風に吹き飛ばされてしまいました。ところが、その巨像を打ち砕いた岩は、大きな山となって全地を覆いました。
36以上が、王のごらんになった夢です。さて、その意味はこうです。 37王様。恐れながら、あなたは諸国の王の上に君臨する王であられます。天の神が、あなたに王国と権威と力と光栄とを与えたからです。 38神は、あなたが辺境の地まで治め、動物や鳥をも支配するよう定めました。あなたは、あの金の頭です。 39しかし、王国の命運が尽きると、別の強国（メド・ペルシヤ）が代わって起こります。その国は、王の王国に比べると劣ります。この第二の国が倒れると、巨像の青銅の腹が表す第三の強国（ギリシヤ）が起こり、世界を支配するようになります。 40続いて、鉄のように強い第四の国（ローマ）が起こり、その国は、鉄が打ち砕くように他の国々を粉砕し、征服していくのです。 41-42一部が鉄で、一部が粘土でできている足は、のちに第四の国が分裂することを示しています。分裂した国の一部は鉄のように強く、一部は粘土のようにもろいのです。 43この鉄と粘土の混合は、分裂した王国同士が支配者相互の政略結婚によって同盟を結び、勢力を強化しようとすることも示しています。しかし、それは成功しません。鉄と粘土とは混じり合わないからです。 44この王たちの時代に、天の神は、決して滅ぼされることのない一つの国を起こします。だれもこの国を征服できません。その国は、すべての国々を打ち砕いて滅ぼします。まさに永遠不滅の国なのです。 45これが、人手によらずに山腹から切り出された岩、鉄も青銅も粘土も銀も金もすべて粉々にしてしまったあの岩の意味するものです。偉大な神が、このように将来起こることを示したのです。王の夢についてのこの解き明かしは、私が夢の内容を描写したのと同様、確かなものです。」
46すると、ネブカデネザル王はダニエルの前にひれ伏し、ダニエルを拝みました。それからダニエルにささげ物をし、その前で良い香りのする香をたかせました。 47王はこう言いました。「ダニエルよ。まことに、おまえの神は、この秘密をおまえにお示しになったのだから、神々の神、王の王、奥義の啓示者だ。」 48王はダニエルを高い位につけ、たくさんの高価な贈り物を与えました。ダニエルはバビロン全州の知事となり、王に仕える知者たちの長官に任じられたのです。 49また王は、ダニエルの求めで、シャデラク、メシャク、アベデ・ネゴをダニエルの補佐官とし、バビロン州の政務全般をつかさどらせました。ダニエルは総務長官として王の宮廷で仕えました。
1And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him. 2Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. 10¶ The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king’s matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean. 11And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh. 12For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. 13And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain.

19¶ Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. 20Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his: 21And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: 22He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him. 23I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter.
24¶ Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation. 25Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation.2.25 I have…: Chaldee, That I have found2.25 captives…: Chaldee, children of the captivity of Judah 26The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof? 27Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king; 28But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. 36¶ This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king. 37Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. 38And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. 46¶ Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him. 47The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret. 48Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon. 49Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.
