ダビデとバテ・シェバ
1翌年の春になると、再び戦いが始まり、ダビデはヨアブの率いるイスラエル軍を送り込んで、アモン人壊滅を計りました。イスラエル軍はたちまちラバの町を包囲しましたが、ダビデ自身はエルサレムにとどまっていました。
2ある夕暮れのことです。昼寝から起きたダビデは、宮殿の屋上を散歩していました。見ると、水浴びをしている美しい女性が目に留まりました。 3さっそく人を送り、その女のことを探らせました。そして、エリアムの娘でウリヤの妻バテ・シェバであることを知ったのです。 4彼女は、月経後の汚れのきよめをしていたところでした。ダビデは女を召し入れ、忍んで来た彼女と床を共にしたのです。こうして彼女は家に帰りました。 5それから、自分が妊娠したことを知ると、人をやってダビデに知らせました。
6さあ、何とかしなければなりません。ダビデは急いでヨアブに伝令を送り、「ヘテ人ウリヤを帰還させよ」と命じました。 7戦場から戻って来たウリヤに、ダビデはヨアブや兵士の様子、戦況などを尋ねました。 8それから、「家へ帰ってゆっくり骨休めをしなさい」と勧めたのです。贈り物も持たせました。 9ところが、ウリヤは自宅に戻らず、王の家来たちとともに、宮殿の門のそばで夜を過ごしたのです。 10ダビデはそれを知ると、さっそくウリヤを呼んで尋ねました。「いったい、どうしたのだ。長く家から離れていたというのに、なぜ昨夜は妻のもとへ戻らなかったのだ。」
11「恐れながら王様。神の箱も、ヨアブ様も、その配下の者たちもみな、戦場で野宿しています。それなのに、どうして私だけが家に帰って飲み食いし、妻と寝たりできるでしょう。誓って申し上げます。そんな罪深いことをする気は毛頭ありません。」
12「よかろう。では今夜もここにとどまるがよい。明日は軍務に戻ってもらう。」
こうして、ウリヤは宮殿から離れませんでした。 13翌日、ダビデは彼を食事に招き、酒を勧めて酔わせました。しかし、ウリヤは自宅に帰ろうとはせず、その夜もまた、宮殿の門のわきで寝たのです。
14翌朝、ついにダビデは戦場のヨアブあてに手紙をしたため、それをウリヤに持たせました。 15その書面で、「ウリヤを激戦地の最前線に送り、彼だけ残して引き揚げて戦死させるようにせよ」と指示したのです。 16ヨアブはウリヤを、包囲中の町の最前線に送り込みました。町を守っていたのは、敵の中でもえり抜きの兵だと知っていたのです。 17ウリヤは数人のイスラエル兵士とともに戦死しました。
18ヨアブは戦況報告をダビデに送る際、 19-21使いの者にこう言い含めました。「もし王がお怒りになって、『なぜ、そんなに町に近づいたのだ。城壁の上から敵が射かけてくるのを考えに入れなかったのか。アビメレクはテベツで、城壁の上から女が投げ落としたひき臼でいのちを落としたのだ』とおっしゃったなら、『ウリヤも戦死いたしました』と申し上げるがよい。」
22使者はエルサレムに着くと、ダビデに報告しました。 23「敵は攻撃をしかけてまいりました。こちらも応戦し、敵を町の門のところまで追い詰めました時、 24城壁の上から、矢を射かけてまいったのです。そのため、味方の数人が殺され、ヘテ人ウリヤも戦死いたしました。」
25それを聞いてダビデは言いました。「よし、わかった。ヨアブには、落胆するなと伝えてくれ。剣は両刃の剣だ！今度こそ慎重に攻めて町を占領せよ。成功を祈ると伝えてくれ。」
26バテ・シェバは夫が戦死したことを知り、喪に服しました。 27喪が明けると、ダビデは彼女を妻として宮殿に迎え、彼女は男の子をもうけました。しかし、ダビデがしたことは主の御心にかないませんでした。

6¶ And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow. 13And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.

18¶ Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war; 19And charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling the matters of the war unto the king, 20And if so be that the king’s wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall? 21Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why went ye nigh the wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.11.21 Jerubbesheth: also called, Jerubbaal
22¶ So the messenger went, and came and shewed David all that Joab had sent him for. 23And the messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate. 24And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king’s servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also. 25Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.11.25 displease…: Heb. be evil in thine eyes11.25 one…: Heb. so and such
26¶ And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband. 27And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son.
